Chapter 12: The Secret Witness
I showed Daniel the message.
He didn’t look surprised.
That scared me more than anything.
“You know who sent this.””
He was quiet.
“Daniel.””
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
“My father.””
I stared at him.
“Your father is alive?””
“No.””
The confusion must have shown on my face.
“He died years ago.””
“Then how did he send it?””
Daniel looked at the phone.
“He left something behind.””
“What?””
“A recording.””
I felt exhausted.
Every secret in this family seemed buried under another one.
“Where?””
Daniel stood.
“At my mother’s house.””
I immediately shook my head.
“No.””
“We need it.””
“No, Daniel.””
I looked at him.
“I’m not sending you back into that house alone.””
“I need to fix this.””
“You needed to fix this years ago.””
The words hurt him.
But he nodded.
“I know.””
Rachel joined us.
When Daniel explained, her expression changed.
“Your father recorded her?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel looked down.
“Because he realized what she was.””
That night, we returned to Evelyn’s house.
Not inside.
At least, not at first.
The police had already placed restrictions after the investigation began.
But Daniel knew where his father kept old belongings.
The garage.
We searched through boxes for nearly an hour.
Then Daniel stopped.
“I found it.””
A small cassette recorder.
Old.
Dusty.
My heart raced.
“Does it work?””
Daniel pressed the button.
Static filled the air.
Then a man’s voice.
Daniel’s father.
“If anyone hears this, it means I was right.””
Everyone froze.
The recording continued.
“My wife has spent years convincing people that she is helping them. She isn’t.””
Rachel covered her mouth.
His voice shook.
“She doesn’t want love. She wants obedience.””
Then another voice.
Evelyn.
Younger.
Angry.
“You never understand what I’m trying to build.””
The recording became clearer.
Daniel’s father answered:
“You’re hurting people.””
Evelyn replied:
“They need correction.””
I felt sick.
The exact same words.
The same belief.
Years later.
Still unchanged.
Then his father said something that made Daniel freeze.
“You will destroy our son.””
Silence.
Then Evelyn whispered:
“He is mine.””
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Because that was the truth.
Not love.
Ownership.
Daniel sat down.
“My whole life…”
Rachel touched his shoulder.
“I know.””
But then we heard something.
A sound outside.
A car door closing.
Everyone froze.
Daniel looked toward the window.
“She followed us.””
We turned.
Through the glass, we saw Evelyn standing in the driveway.
Watching.
Waiting.
She wasn’t angry.
She wasn’t surprised.
She looked almost relieved.
Like she wanted us to find the recording.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
Evelyn’s voice came through.
“You finally found it.””
My blood ran cold.
“How did you know?””
A quiet laugh.
“Because I wanted you to.””
I stared outside.
“Why?””
“Because now you’ll understand.””
“Understand what?””
Her voice became softer.
Almost sad.
“Your father-in-law thought he could expose me too.””
A pause.
“He failed.””
I felt a chill.
“What are you talking about?””
Evelyn looked directly through the window at me.
Then she said:
“Ask Daniel what happened the night his father died.””
I slowly turned toward my husband.
Daniel’s face had gone completely pale.
May you like
Because whatever happened that night...
he had never told me.
