Chapter 2: The Secret My Husband Kept

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because Emma wouldn’t sleep.

She finally passed out in my arms after hours of crying.

Not because I was afraid of Evelyn.

I was afraid of the answer I already felt coming.

I sat beside Emma’s bed, watching the faint rise and fall of her chest.

Every few minutes, she would move and whisper in her sleep.

“No closet…”

Each time, my heart broke a little more.

At midnight, Daniel came home.

The sound of his truck pulling into the driveway used to make me smile.

That night, it made me sick.

The front door opened.

“Hey,” he called softly.

“I’m home.””

I walked into the hallway.

He stopped when he saw my face.

“What happened?””

I stared at him.

“You tell me.””

His expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

I pointed toward Emma’s bedroom.

“She was locked in the closet.””

Daniel went completely still.

For a second, I saw something in his eyes.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“You knew.””

His face immediately changed.

“What?””

“You knew.””

“No, I didn’t.””

I stepped closer.

“Emma told me you saw your mother do it before.””

Daniel looked away.

That was all the answer I needed.

My hands started shaking.

“How long?””

“Listen—”

“How long have you known?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“It wasn’t like that.””

I almost laughed.

“It wasn’t like what? The part where your mother covered your daughter’s mouth? The part where she tied her up?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Keep your voice down.””

I stared at him.

“My daughter was tortured in our house, and you’re worried about being quiet?””

He flinched.

“I was handling it.””

“No. You were hiding it.””

Daniel walked toward the kitchen.

“Evelyn was just trying to teach her boundaries.””

I followed him.

“Boundaries?””

My voice shook.

“You watched a six-year-old get tied up and called it boundaries?””

“She only did it once before.””

The room went silent.

I felt like I had been punched.

“Once before?””

Daniel swallowed.

“I told her not to do it again.””

“When?””

He didn’t answer.

“When, Daniel?””

“Three weeks ago.””

Three weeks.

Three weeks my daughter had been carrying this fear.

Three weeks she had smiled at me and said she was fine.

I grabbed my phone.

“I’m calling the police.””

Daniel immediately reached for my hand.

“Wait.””

I pulled away.

“No.””

“Please.””

The desperation in his voice almost made me stop.

Almost.

But then I remembered Emma’s words.

Please don’t leave me with Grandma again.

“What are you afraid of?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at the floor.

“You don’t understand my mother.””

“No. I understand exactly.””

“You don’t.””

His voice cracked.

“She can destroy people.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because Daniel was not protecting Evelyn.

He was afraid of her.

The next morning, I took Emma to the doctor.

The pediatrician examined the marks on her wrists while I sat beside her, holding her hand.

The doctor looked at me carefully.

“Has this happened before?””

I hesitated.

Then I looked at Emma.

She was staring at the floor.

I squeezed her fingers.

“Yes.””

The doctor nodded slowly.

“I’m required to make a report.””

I expected to feel afraid.

Instead, I felt relief.

Someone else finally knew.

Someone else had to take this seriously.

But when I returned home that afternoon, Daniel was standing in the living room.

And he wasn’t alone.

Evelyn was sitting on the couch.

Beside her was a folder.

Daniel looked nervous.

Evelyn looked calm.

Too calm.

“I think we need to talk,” she said.

I kept Emma behind me.

“No.””

Evelyn tilted her head.

“You really think you understand what happened?””

“I know exactly what happened.””

“No, you don’t.””

She opened the folder.

Inside were printed documents.

Photos.

Notes.

My stomach tightened.

“What is that?””

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“Evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

She looked directly at me.

“Evidence that you are the reason Emma has become impossible to control.””

I stared at her.

Then at Daniel.

And I realized something terrifying.

This wasn’t just about what happened in the closet.

May you like

They had been preparing for something.

But I didn’t know what they were planning until Evelyn pushed the first document across the table.
