Chapter 10: The Truth About Daniel

The courtroom went silent.

Every sound disappeared.

The shuffle of papers.

The whispers from the benches.

Even the ticking clock on the wall seemed to stop.

I looked at Daniel.

His face had lost all color.

“Daniel?”” I whispered.

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

The judge looked between us.

“Mr. Daniel, is there something you need to clarify?””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Evelyn leaned back in her chair.

For the first time, she looked confident again.

Like she had been waiting for this moment.

My hands tightened around the edge of the table.

“Tell the truth.””

Daniel looked at me.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Not fear of his mother.

Shame.

“I made a mistake.””

My heart sank.

“What mistake?””

He swallowed.

“When Emma was born, my mother convinced me that she needed a bigger role in our lives.””

I stared at him.

“She wanted control.””

“Yes.””

“And you let her.””

He lowered his head.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

But it was better than another lie.

Melissa stood.

“Your Honor, we need to understand the context.””

The judge nodded.

“Proceed.””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“My mother said she had experience raising children. She said you were too protective.””

I almost laughed.

Too protective.

That was what Evelyn always used against me.

“She told me if I wanted to be a good father, I had to trust her.””

I looked at him.

“And you believed her?””

Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.

“I thought I was doing the right thing.””

“You thought leaving my daughter alone with someone who hurt your sister was the right thing?””

He looked away.

“No.””

The room was quiet.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“Don’t pretend you were innocent.””

Everyone turned.

Her voice was calm.

Almost gentle.

“You begged me to help when you didn’t know what to do.””

Daniel looked at her.

“That’s not true.””

“Oh, please.””

She smiled.

“You called me because you couldn’t handle being a father.””

The words hit him hard.

And I realized something.

Evelyn wasn’t defending herself.

She was destroying him.

Because that was what she did.

When people stopped obeying her, she attacked their weakest points.

Daniel stood.

“I was wrong.””

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“You ungrateful child.””

There it was.

The mask slipped.

Just for a second.

But everyone saw it.

The judge leaned forward.

“Mrs. Evelyn, please remain respectful.””

She immediately composed herself.

“Of course, Your Honor.””

But it was too late.

The damage was done.

After the hearing, Melissa pulled me aside.

“She’s losing control.””

I looked at Evelyn across the hallway.

“She doesn’t look like it.””

“That’s because she’s experienced.””

Melissa lowered her voice.

“She knows how to perform.””

I watched Evelyn speak calmly with her lawyer.

“She’s going to keep fighting.””

“Yes.””

I sighed.

“How do we stop someone like this?””

Melissa looked at me.

“We don’t stop her by convincing people she’s cruel.””

“Then how?””

“We show exactly how she operates.””

That night, Daniel came to my apartment again.

This time, he didn’t ask to come inside.

He stood outside the door.

“I understand if you never forgive me.””

I looked at him.

“Why are you here?””

“Because I need to tell you everything.””

I almost closed the door.

Then Emma walked into the hallway.

“Daddy?””

Daniel looked at her.

His face broke.

Emma didn’t run to him.

She didn’t hug him.

She just stood there.

Afraid.

And that hurt him more than anything.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

Emma looked at me.

Then back at him.

“You didn’t help me.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“No.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I didn’t.””

Emma held her rabbit tighter.

“Why?””

Daniel had no answer.

And for once, he didn’t try to make excuses.

“I was scared.””

Emma looked confused.

“Adults can be scared too?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

“But you’re supposed to protect me.””

The words destroyed him.

He wiped his eyes.

“You’re right.””

Emma walked away.

Not because she hated him.

Because she wasn’t ready.

After she disappeared into her room, Daniel handed me a small envelope.

“What is this?””

“Something my mother doesn’t know I have.””

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Old.

Handwritten.

From Evelyn.

I read the first line.

And my entire body went cold.

“Daniel, if you want to prove you are loyal to this family, you must make sure your wife learns obedience.””

I looked up.

Daniel looked devastated.

“She wrote that after our first major argument.””

I kept reading.

The letter wasn’t just about discipline.

It was about control.

About making sure I depended on Evelyn.

About isolating me.

Then I reached the final sentence.

And I realized the truth.

Evelyn hadn’t started planning against me after Emma was born.

She had started before.

Before she even knew how much I would fight.

May you like

Because she had never seen me as family.

She had seen me as an obstacle.
