Chapter 8: The Daughter She Left Behind

I forgot how to breathe.

The woman standing beneath the broken streetlight looked older.

Of course she did.

Fifteen years had passed.

There were silver strands in her hair.

Lines around her eyes.

But those eyes…

Those eyes were the same.

The same eyes that watched over me when I was sick.

The same eyes that smiled when I graduated.

The same eyes I had cried over at a funeral.

“Emma.””

My name broke something inside me.

Nobody had ever said it like that.

Not since I was a little girl.

I stepped backward.

“No.””

The woman’s face crumbled.

“I know.””

“No.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“You’re not her.””

She nodded slowly.

“I understand why you think that.””

“Because she’s dead.””

The words came out angry.

Not sad.

Angry.

“You’re dead.””

My mother covered her mouth.

And that tiny gesture confirmed everything.

It was her.

“Emma…”

I turned away.

I couldn’t look at her.

Fifteen years.

Fifteen years of grief.

Fifteen years of believing I had been abandoned by the universe.

And she had been alive.

“I hated you.””

The confession came quietly.

My mother closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“I cried for you.””

“I know.””

“I needed you.””

Her shoulders shook.

“I know.””

I finally turned around.

“Then why?””

That was the only question that mattered.

“Why did you leave me?””

She looked at the ground.

“Because staying would have gotten you killed.””

The words froze me.

“What?””

She stepped closer.

“Your father found out people were using his company to hide illegal financial deals.””

I stared.

“And?””

“And he tried to expose them.””

My mother’s voice trembled.

“After that, he became a target.””

I thought about the letter.

The trust.

The warnings.

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“People close to us.””

My stomach tightened.

“Mark?””

Her expression changed.

“No.””

Relief came for half a second.

Then disappeared.

“His father.””

I felt cold.

“My father-in-law?””

She nodded.

“Mark was involved because he was young. He thought he was helping his family.””

I remembered Mark’s words.

I was trying to fix what my father did.

“What happened the night you disappeared?””

My mother looked away.

“The accident was staged.””

My heart pounded.

“You survived?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you come back?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because they threatened you.””

The answer hurt.

“But I was your daughter.””

“Exactly.””

She reached for my hand.

“I knew if I returned, they would use you against me.””

I pulled my hand away.

“You should have told me.””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Many times.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She looked toward the dark building behind her.

“Mark stopped every attempt.””

The anger returned.

Again.

Always Mark.

But then something bothered me.

“Why didn’t you go to Daniel?””

She hesitated.

And that hesitation scared me.

“What?””

My mother whispered:

“Because Daniel knew.””

The world stopped.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Your brother knew I was alive.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

“Emma—”

“No.””

My heart raced.

“My entire life is built on lies.””

She reached toward me.

“I’m sorry.””

I shook my head.

“Who can I trust?””

My mother looked at me sadly.

“Almost nobody.””

A sound came from inside the building.

We both turned.

Footsteps.

Someone was approaching.

My mother grabbed my arm.

“We have to go.””

But it was too late.

A man stepped into the doorway.

Older.

Gray hair.

Expensive coat.

I recognized him instantly.

I had seen his picture before.

On business websites.

At charity events.

My father-in-law.

Richard Carter.

Mark’s father.

He smiled.

“Hello, Emma.””

My mother moved in front of me.

Richard laughed softly.

“Still protecting her?””

My blood turned cold.

Because my mother wasn’t afraid of him.

She was afraid of what he would say next.

Richard looked at me.

“You deserve to know the truth.””

He paused.

“Your mother didn’t disappear because of me.””

I stared.

“Then why?””

His smile faded.

“Because she found out what your father did.””

My mother whispered:

“Don’t listen to him.””

Richard ignored her.

“Your father wasn’t investigating my family.””

He stepped closer.

“He was investigating his own.””

And then he said the words that shattered everything:

“Emma, your father’s biggest secret was not money.””

May you like

He looked directly at me.

“It was you.””
