Chapter 2: The Secret I Was Forced to Hide
Daniel had changed.
That was the first thing I noticed.
The last time I saw my brother, he was wearing an old leather jacket, carrying a backpack, and laughing as he promised he would visit me every weekend.
That was before Mark entered my life.
Before Mark convinced me that my family was “holding me back.””
Before he slowly separated me from everyone who loved me.
Now Daniel stood in front of me wearing a tailored suit, surrounded by security, looking nothing like the brother I remembered.
But his eyes were the same.
Protective.
Furious.
“Emma,” he said softly.
That one word almost destroyed me.
Because I had spent years pretending I didn’t miss him.
Pretending I didn’t wonder if he was okay.
Pretending I wasn’t hurt when Mark told me Daniel didn’t care enough to stay.
I opened my mouth, but no words came out.
Daniel looked at my face.
Then he looked at my wrist.
The anger in his expression became something darker.
“Did he do this?””
I quickly pulled my sleeve down.
“Daniel…”
“Did he?””
Mark stepped forward.
“This is a private family matter.””
Daniel looked at him.
“No. It stopped being private when you put your hands on my pregnant sister in public.””
Mark swallowed.
“You don’t understand the situation.””
Daniel laughed once.
A cold sound.
“I understand enough.””
One of the men beside him handed Daniel a folder.
My heart started racing.
Mark noticed.
“What is that?””
Daniel opened it.
“Evidence.””
Mark’s expression shifted.
“What evidence?””
“Everything you thought nobody would find.””
I looked between them.
“What are you talking about?””
Daniel looked at me, and his face softened.
“I’m sorry, Emma.””
My chest tightened.
“For what?””
“For believing I could protect you from a distance.””
I didn’t understand.
Daniel glanced at Mark.
“This man told you I abandoned you.””
Mark’s silence answered before his words did.
“He told me you didn’t want anything to do with me,” I whispered.
Daniel’s eyes filled with pain.
“I called you forty-seven times.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I sent letters. Emails. Messages.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
My breathing became uneven.
“Mark said…”
“I know what Mark said.””
Daniel looked at my husband.
“He blocked every message. Changed your phone number. Told our family you wanted space.””
The world seemed to tilt.
I looked at Mark.
He didn’t deny it.
That was worse.
“You lied to me?””
Mark’s face hardened.
“Emma, don’t let him manipulate you.””
“Manipulate me?””
My voice cracked.
“You isolated me from everyone I loved.””
“You were my wife.””
“I was your prisoner.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
And once they were spoken, I couldn’t take them back.
Mark’s eyes narrowed.
“You should be careful.””
Daniel immediately stepped between us.
“Threatening her again?””
Mark adjusted his jacket.
“You think showing up with bodyguards changes anything?””
Daniel opened the folder.
“It changes everything.””
He pulled out a document.
“Financial records. Property transfers. Messages between you and your attorney.””
Mark’s face went pale.
I looked at the papers.
“What did you find?””
Daniel hesitated.
That scared me more than anything.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Mark wasn’t just trying to take your house.””
My heart pounded.
“What was he trying to do?””
Daniel handed me the document.
My eyes moved across the page.
And then I saw it.
My name.
A signature line.
A transfer agreement.
A date from two months earlier.
Before I knew anything was wrong.
Before I started questioning him.
“He planned this before the baby was even born,” Daniel said quietly.
I looked at Mark.
The man I had loved.
The man I had defended.
The man who had kissed my forehead every morning and told me I was his whole world.
He looked like a stranger.
“You were going to take everything.””
Mark’s expression changed.
For a moment, I thought he might apologize.
Instead, he smiled.
“You still don’t understand, Emma.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Understand what?””
Mark looked directly at me.
“That you were never the owner.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
He leaned closer.
“The house. The accounts. The investments.””
His smile grew.
“They were never really yours.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“What did you do?””
Mark looked at the SUV behind us.
Then at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“I made sure that when the truth came out, Emma would have nowhere to go.””
My blood ran cold.
Because suddenly I realized something.
Mark wasn’t afraid that Daniel had returned.
He was afraid Daniel had returned too early.
And that meant there was something even bigger he was hiding.
Something buried deeper than stolen money.
Something connected to the baby I was carrying.
My phone suddenly rang.
Everyone looked down.
The screen showed an unknown number.
I answered.
A man’s voice whispered:
“Emma, don’t trust your brother. Mark isn’t the only person who has been lying to you.””
Then the call ended.
And beneath the unknown number was a message that appeared seconds later.
A photograph.
May you like
A photograph of my unborn baby’s medical records.
With a name written across the top that made my hands go numb.
