Chapter 3: The Name on the Record

I stared at the screen until the letters blurred.

The photograph was blurry, but I recognized the document.

It was from my doctor’s office.

My pregnancy records.

My private medical information.

Information only a few people should have had access to.

Daniel noticed my expression.

“Emma?””

I couldn’t answer.

“Who was that?””

I slowly lowered the phone.

“I don’t know.””

Mark took one step forward.

“What did they send you?””

The fear in his voice was different this time.

Not anger.

Not control.

Fear.

And that told me everything.

“You know who it is,” I said.

Mark immediately looked away.

That tiny movement confirmed my suspicion.

Daniel saw it too.

“Who has access to her records?””

Mark remained silent.

Daniel’s voice became sharper.

“I asked you a question.””

The security guards moved closer.

Mark finally laughed.

“You really think you’ve won?””

Nobody responded.

He looked at me.

“Emma, you have no idea what you’re involved in.””

My fingers tightened around my phone.

“Then explain.””

He didn’t.

Instead, he walked toward his Mercedes.

Daniel blocked his path.

“You’re not leaving.””

Mark smiled.

“You can’t keep me here.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“But the police can.””

The smile disappeared.

For the first time, Mark looked genuinely trapped.

I watched him carefully.

The man who used to control every room he entered was suddenly searching for a way out.

“Daniel,” I whispered.

My brother turned.

“What?””

“Why did he say the baby’s records?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

That answer terrified me.

Because Daniel was usually the person who knew what to do.

But now he looked just as confused as I was.

A nurse from the clinic slowly approached.

“Mrs. Carter?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

She looked nervous.

“Can I speak with you privately?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“She stays with me.””

The nurse nodded.

“I understand. But this is important.””

We moved a few feet away.

The nurse opened a tablet.

“Someone accessed your file yesterday.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

She hesitated.

“According to the system, it was authorized by your husband.””

I looked back at Mark.

“What did he access?””

The nurse swallowed.

“The paternity information request.””

The world went silent.

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

Daniel’s face changed.

“Paternity?””

The nurse nodded.

“He requested additional testing.””

I looked at Mark.

“Why?””

He didn’t answer.

He just stared at me.

And that silence hurt more than any lie.

“Mark?””

His jaw tightened.

“I was protecting myself.””

“From what?””

He looked away.

That was when I understood.

This wasn’t about money.

This wasn’t about property.

This was about a question he had been hiding from me.

A question he was too afraid to ask me directly.

Daniel stepped beside me.

“Emma, did you know about this?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Mark finally spoke.

“You should have told me the truth.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“The truth about what?””

He opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

Because he realized he had revealed too much.

Daniel stared at him.

“What are you talking about?””

Mark looked at me with a strange mixture of anger and panic.

“You never told her?””

“Told me what?””

Nobody answered.

The wind moved through the parking lot.

A piece of paper from the gutter rolled across the pavement.

The tiny baby shoes were still lying there.

Forgotten.

Broken.

Like everything I thought my life was.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed after only a few seconds.

“Are you sure?””

A pause.

Then:

“Send me the file.””

He ended the call.

I looked at him.

“What happened?””

Daniel didn’t speak immediately.

He looked at Mark.

Then at me.

“Emma…”

My heart sank.

“What?””

Daniel held up his phone.

“The paternity report is not the only thing Mark was hiding.””

He turned the screen toward me.

There was another document.

Another name.

Another secret.

May you like

And this time, it wasn’t Mark’s name written at the top.

It was mine.
