Chapter 13: The Final Piece of the Puzzle

The message on Mark’s phone remained glowing on the table.

*You have ten minutes to bring Emma back. Or Daniel goes to prison for a crime he didn’t commit.*

For a moment, neither of us moved.

The restaurant around us continued as normal.

A waiter carried plates to another table.

A couple laughed near the window.

A song played quietly through the speakers.

But my entire world had narrowed down to one sentence.

Daniel was in danger.

“He knows,” I whispered.

Mark nodded.

“He always knows more than he should.””

I looked at him.

“You said Daniel was innocent.””

“He is.””

“How do you know?””

Mark looked down.

“Because I was there.””

My chest tightened.

“Where?””

“The night Richard set him up.””

I stared.

“Tell me everything.””

Mark took a slow breath.

“For years, Richard used my family’s company to hide illegal transactions. Your father discovered it.””

“And you helped him?””

“I tried.””

The answer was painful.

Because it sounded like the truth.

“I was twenty-one. I thought I could fix everything quietly.””

“You were protecting your father.””

Mark looked away.

“I was afraid of him.””

That surprised me.

“You were afraid of Richard?””

A bitter smile crossed his face.

“You think you were the only person he controlled?””

The words stayed between us.

Because suddenly I understood something.

Mark wasn’t the powerful man I thought he was.

He was someone who had spent years pretending to be.

“What happened that night?””

Mark folded his hands.

“Your father called Daniel because he trusted him.””

I listened carefully.

“Richard found out.””

My stomach tightened.

“He followed them?””

“Yes.””

“And my father?””

Mark’s eyes darkened.

“He tried to escape with the evidence.””

I swallowed.

“What evidence?””

“The archive.””

The word felt heavier now.

“Daniel got the key.””

“Yes.””

“Then why was he blamed?””

“Because Richard needed someone young and vulnerable.””

My heart sank.

“Daniel.””

Mark nodded.

“He planted evidence. Made it look like Daniel stole from your father.””

“And you knew?””

Mark closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

My anger returned.

“You knew for fifteen years?””

“I was trying to find proof.””

“You let me believe my brother abandoned me.””

“I was trying to keep you away from Richard.””

“You married me.””

The silence was immediate.

Mark looked at me.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His answer came quietly.

“Because Richard told me if I didn’t keep you close, he would find another way to get to you.””

I stared at him.

“And you thought controlling me was protection?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“No.””

A pause.

“I thought I could control the damage.””

I looked away.

The difference was small.

But it mattered.

Because for the first time, Mark wasn’t defending himself.

He was admitting what he had done.

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

“Daniel?””

No response.

Only breathing.

Then another voice.

Richard.

“Emma.””

My blood went cold.

“Where is my brother?””

Richard laughed softly.

“Always protecting him.””

“Where is he?””

“You have your father’s stubbornness.””

“Answer me.””

A pause.

Then:

“Bring the key.””

I looked at Mark.

Richard continued.

“Bring the archive key to the old Carter estate.””

“No.””

“Then your brother takes responsibility for a crime he didn’t commit.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“You’re lying.””

“Am I?””

I heard Daniel in the background.

A weak voice.

“Emma, don’t.””

The call ended.

Mark stood immediately.

“We need to go.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

He stopped.

“You can’t go alone.””

“I’m not going alone.””

I picked up the recording device.

“I’m bringing the one person my father trusted.””

Mark frowned.

“Who?””

I looked at the table.

At the message my father had left.

*The key is the person you trust enough to protect it.*

Then I understood.

My father wasn’t talking about Daniel.

He wasn’t talking about Mark.

He was talking about me.

The entire time, everyone had been searching for the person who could unlock the archive.

But nobody understood.

The archive wasn’t meant to be opened by someone powerful.

It was meant to be opened by someone willing to risk everything.

I stood.

“Call Daniel.””

Mark looked confused.

“Why?””

“Because Richard thinks he has already won.””

I walked toward the door.

“And I want him to keep thinking that.””

The old Carter estate looked exactly like the kind of place where secrets were buried.

Huge iron gates.

Dark windows.

A house that had witnessed generations of lies.

Mark and I entered through the side entrance.

No guards.

No resistance.

Too easy.

“That worries me,” Mark whispered.

“It should.””

A voice echoed from the hallway.

“Emma.””

Richard stepped into view.

Daniel stood behind him.

His hands were tied.

But he was conscious.

Alive.

“You came.””

I held up the key.

“You wanted this.””

Richard smiled.

“Your father always underestimated me.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“He underestimated how long people like you could hide.””

Richard’s smile faded.

Mark stepped forward.

“You’re done.””

Richard laughed.

“You still think you’re a hero.””

Then he looked at me.

“Open the archive.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

His expression changed.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand perfectly.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then Mark.

Then the key.

“This was never about the archive.””

Richard frowned.

“What?””

I smiled slightly.

“It was about finding out who would betray me.””

For the first time, Richard looked uncertain.

And that was when I pressed the button on the recording device.

My father’s voice filled the room.

Richard froze.

Because he recognized it.

May you like

And the words my father spoke next changed everything.

“If you are hearing this, Richard, then you have finally revealed yourself.””
