Chapter 12: The Truth Hidden Before Birth
I didn’t move.
My mother stood in the doorway holding a file like it was something dangerous.
Maybe it was.
Everything connected to my family seemed to be.
“What about my baby?””
She walked slowly toward me.
“Before you were born, your father made a decision.””
My heart pounded.
“What decision?””
She sat beside me.
“He created a protection plan.””
I frowned.
“For me?””
She shook her head.
“For you and your child.””
I froze.
“My child?””
She nodded.
“Your father knew someone might come after his bloodline.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Why?””
Daniel looked away.
Because he already knew.
My mother opened the file.
Inside were medical documents.
Old ones.
Very old.
“Your father worked with doctors who specialized in genetics.””
I stared.
“I don’t understand.””
“He believed certain information had to be protected.””
“What information?””
She looked at me.
“The archive wasn’t just documents.””
A chill moved through me.
“What was it?””
My mother whispered:
“Proof.””
“Of what?””
“That certain families had been hiding their power for generations.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“And Emma’s baby?””
My mother looked at him.
“Was never supposed to be part of this.””
My heart sank.
“Then why is it?””
She looked down.
“Because someone tested the baby.””
I gripped the file.
“Who?””
My mother hesitated.
“Mark.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course.
But then she continued.
“And someone else.””
I opened my eyes.
“Who?””
She looked at Daniel.
The silence was immediate.
“No.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Emma.””
“No.””
I stepped back.
“You’re saying Daniel tested my baby?””
“No.””
My mother shook her head.
“Not Daniel.””
She looked toward the window.
“The person who took the sample used Daniel’s name.””
My stomach twisted.
Someone was framing him.
Someone wanted me to distrust everyone.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Mark.
*I know who tested the baby.*
I opened it.
A second message appeared.
*Meet me tonight. Alone.*
Daniel saw.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“I need answers.””
“He’s dangerous.””
“So is everyone.””
The words hurt because they were true.
My mother touched my arm.
“Emma, be careful.””
I looked at both of them.
“I spent three years thinking my husband was the only person controlling my life.””
My voice shook.
“But now I realize everyone has been deciding what I should know.””
Nobody argued.
Because they knew.
I left that night.
Not because I trusted Mark.
Not because I forgave him.
But because I needed the truth.
The meeting place was an old restaurant on the edge of town.
Almost empty.
Mark sat alone in the corner.
No suit.
No confidence.
Just a tired man who looked like he had lost everything.
When he saw me, he stood.
“You came.””
“I almost didn’t.””
He nodded.
“I understand.””
I sat across from him.
“Tell me.””
Mark looked down.
“The person who ordered the test wasn’t trying to find out if the baby was mine.””
“Then what?””
He pushed a folder toward me.
“Your baby’s DNA triggered something.””
I opened it.
There were symbols.
Codes.
References to my father’s archive.
“What is this?””
“Your father created a system.””
“A system?””
“Yes.””
Mark looked at me.
“A way to identify the person who carried his bloodline.””
My fingers trembled.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“It’s why Richard wants the archive.””
I looked up.
“And my baby?””
Mark swallowed.
“Your baby is the only person who can unlock it.””
The room felt smaller.
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because your father designed it that way.””
I stared at the papers.
My child.
My unborn baby.
A person who hadn’t even entered the world yet.
Already being hunted.
“Who knows?””
Mark’s eyes darkened.
“Everyone who has been looking for your father’s secrets.””
A chill ran through me.
“Richard.””
“Yes.””
“My mother.””
“She knows some.””
“Daniel.””
Mark looked away.
“More than he admits.””
I hated that he was right.
Then Mark reached into his pocket.
He placed something on the table.
A small recording device.
“What is this?””
“Your father’s final message.””
I stopped breathing.
“Where did you get that?””
Mark looked at me.
“I stole it from Richard.””
I stared.
“You stole it?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
For the first time, Mark looked completely honest.
“Because I realized too late that protecting my family meant destroying yours.””
The recording device sat between us.
Waiting.
I pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then a voice.
My father’s voice.
Older.
Tired.
Afraid.
“Emma…”
My eyes filled instantly.
“If you are hearing this, then they found the archive.””
I covered my mouth.
The recording continued.
“And if they found the archive, they will come for the child.””
The sound cut briefly.
Then my father said the words that changed everything.
“Emma, your baby is not the key.””
A pause.
“The key is the person you trust enough to protect it.””
The recording ended.
And on the table beside me, Mark’s phone lit up.
A message appeared.
May you like
From Richard.
*You have ten minutes to bring Emma back. Or Daniel goes to prison for a crime he didn’t commit.*
