Chapter 9: The Brother Who Kept the Secret
I stayed silent after James’s confession.
Sometimes silence says more than anger.
Because anger is expected.
People prepare for anger.
But silence makes them reveal themselves.
“James.””
He exhaled.
“I know how this sounds.””
“No.””
My voice was low.
“You don’t.””
“I didn’t hurt Emily.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me where you were?””
He didn’t answer.
That was the problem.
Everyone around me seemed to have pieces of the truth.
Everyone except me.
“I need to know.””
James finally spoke.
“I was following Vanessa.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“Emily asked me to.””
I stood up.
“Why?””
“Because she was scared.””
I closed my eyes.
Another person.
Another warning.
Another secret.
“She thought Vanessa was dangerous.””
“And you followed her?””
“Yes.””
“What did you see?””
James took a deep breath.
“I saw Vanessa meeting someone.””
“Who?””
“I didn’t know at the time.””
“Do you know now?””
“Yes.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
James’s answer came quietly.
“Your business partner.””
The room went silent.
My business partner.
Ethan.
The man who had attended my wedding.
The man who had helped me survive after Emily died.
The man who always told me I deserved happiness again.
I gripped the phone.
“That’s impossible.””
“I wish it was.””
“What did they talk about?””
“I couldn’t hear everything.””
“Then what do you know?””
James hesitated.
“I know Vanessa gave him something.””
“What?””
“A folder.””
I felt sick.
“What was inside?””
“I don’t know.””
“James.””
“I followed them after that.””
“Where?””
“An office.””
My heartbeat increased.
“Whose office?””
He paused.
“Yours.””
I froze.
“What?””
“The old office building.””
The same building where I stored personal files.
The same place where Emily kept documents.
I sat down.
“What happened next?””
“I went inside after they left.””
“And?””
“I found copies of your financial records.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Why would Vanessa want those?””
James’s voice became quiet.
“Because she wasn’t just interested in you.””
A cold chill ran through me.
“She was interested in what you had.””
I thought about the wedding.
The expensive plans.
The pressure.
The way Vanessa always talked about our future.
The house.
The upgrades.
The investments.
I had called it ambition.
Maybe it was something else.
“James.””
“Yes?””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
His voice cracked.
“Because Emily died that night.””
I stopped.
“And then you fell apart.””
Silence.
“I saw you holding Lily at the funeral.””
James continued.
“You looked like you had lost everything.””
I closed my eyes.
“And you were afraid the truth would destroy me.””
“Yes.””
I looked toward Lily’s room.
“And now?””
“Now she’s hurting your daughter.””
That was the difference.
Years ago, I was broken.
But now I was a father.
And my daughter needed me.
The next day, I met Ethan.
He arrived at my house confused.
“Daniel, what’s going on?””
I didn’t invite him inside.
“I have questions.””
His smile faded.
“About?””
“Vanessa.””
The change in his face was small.
But I saw it.
A flicker.
Fear.
“What about her?””
“You tell me.””
He looked away.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
“Did she ever ask you for my financial records?””
His silence answered.
I stepped closer.
“You knew.””
Ethan shook his head.
“It wasn’t like that.””
“Then what was it like?””
He rubbed his face.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“You listen.””
He looked at me.
“You were my friend.””
“I am your friend.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Friends don’t hide things that could destroy someone’s family.””
Ethan looked down.
Then whispered:
“I can explain.””
“Start.””
He took a breath.
“Vanessa didn’t come into your life by accident.””
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan looked toward my house.
Toward Lily’s room.
Then said:
“She knew about Emily before she ever met you.””
I felt my blood run cold.
“How?””
Ethan’s voice became barely audible.
“Because Vanessa was connected to the accident from the beginning.””
I stared at him.
“What are you saying?””
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small flash drive.
“I kept this because I knew one day you would find out.””
I didn’t take it immediately.
“What’s on it?””
Ethan looked at me.
“The conversation Vanessa never wanted you to hear.””
My hand moved toward the drive.
Then my phone rang.
It was Lily’s school.
I answered.
A teacher’s frightened voice came through.
“Mr. Morgan…”
My heart stopped.
“What happened?””
“Someone came to pick Lily up.””
My grip tightened.
“Who?””
The teacher hesitated.
May you like
Then said:
“She said she was Lily’s mother.””
