Chapter 7: The Truth About My Daughter
The look on Lily’s face was something I would never forget.
Not the fear from the dressing room.
Not the sadness from all the things Vanessa had done.
This was different.
This was confusion.
A six-year-old child standing in front of me, wondering if she belonged.
I dropped the phone onto the counter and immediately walked toward her.
“Lily.””
She stepped back.
That hurt more than anything.
My daughter had never stepped away from me before.
“Sweetheart, come here.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Am I not your real daughter?””
I knelt down so we were at the same height.
“Listen to me.””
She wiped her cheek.
“Vanessa said…”
“I don’t care what Vanessa said.””
My voice cracked.
“You are my daughter.””
“But what if I’m not?””
I reached for her hand.
“You are.””
“But she said my mommy left something behind.””
I froze.
Emily.
Again.
Vanessa had chosen the one person Lily could never defend.
Her mother.
The woman she barely remembered.
“Lily, your mom loved you more than anything in the world.””
She looked down.
“Then why would Vanessa say that?””
Because Vanessa wanted to hurt us.
Because she knew exactly where to place the knife.
But I didn’t say that.
Not to Lily.
“She said something cruel because she was angry.””
Lily looked at me.
“Are you angry at me too?””
My heart shattered.
“No.””
I pulled her into my arms.
“I could never be angry at you.””
She cried against my shoulder.
“Promise?””
“Promise.””
That night, after Lily finally fell asleep, I sat at my desk and searched through everything I had from Emily.
Letters.
Photos.
Old emails.
Anything.
I needed to know what Vanessa was talking about.
Not because I doubted Lily.
Never that.
But because someone had used my daughter’s identity as a weapon.
And I needed to know why.
Around midnight, I found an old cloud folder I hadn’t opened in years.
Emily’s name was on it.
Inside were dozens of files.
Most were photos.
But one document caught my attention.
A note.
Created three months before the accident.
My hands shook as I opened it.
*“Daniel, if you are reading this, something happened and I didn’t get the chance to explain.””*
I stopped breathing.
I kept reading.
*“First, Lily is our daughter. Nothing and no one can ever change that.””*
I closed my eyes.
A tear fell before I even reached the next sentence.
*“But I need you to know there is someone who has been asking questions about our family.””*
My heart raced.
The next line had a name.
Vanessa Reed.
Emily had written everything.
How Vanessa had appeared at charity events where Emily volunteered.
How she had asked strange questions about Daniel’s work.
About their marriage.
About Lily.
Then:
*“I don’t know what Vanessa wants, but she scares me.””*
I stared at the screen.
Emily knew.
She knew before anyone else.
The next morning, I called James.
“You need to come over.””
He arrived within an hour.
When he saw Emily’s letter, his face went pale.
“I thought she destroyed it.””
“What?””
James sat down.
“Emily had another copy.””
“Where?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“I don’t know.””
“James.””
He sighed.
“She gave it to someone she trusted.””
“Who?””
He looked toward Lily’s room.
“Rachel.””
I immediately called her.
She answered nervously.
“Daniel?””
“Rachel, did Emily ever give you something before she died?””
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.””
My grip tightened.
“What was it?””
“A letter.””
“Do you still have it?””
Another pause.
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was scared.””
“Of what?””
Rachel’s voice became quiet.
“Of Vanessa.””
I drove to Rachel’s house that afternoon.
She handed me a small envelope.
Emily’s handwriting was on the front.
My name.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a letter.
Not long.
But enough.
*Daniel, if you ever doubt yourself, remember this: Lily is yours. She is our miracle. Protect her.*
I swallowed hard.
Then I read the final sentence.
*“If Vanessa ever becomes part of Lily’s life, please be careful.””*
I looked up.
Rachel was crying.
“She knew.””
I nodded.
“She knew.””
Before I could say anything else, my phone rang.
The number was unknown.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice spoke.
“Daniel Morgan?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Detective Aaron Cole.””
I frowned.
“Why are you calling me?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because I reopened the investigation into Emily Morgan’s accident.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
May you like
His answer was quiet.
“Because yesterday, someone anonymously sent me evidence that the accident may not have been an accident.””
