Chapter 13: The Last Letter From Emily
I stared at Rachel’s name written on the envelope.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Not Ethan.
Not Detective Cole.
Not me.
Because after everything I had learned, one thing had become painfully clear.
The truth had never been hidden in one place.
It had been scattered between people.
Everyone had carried a piece.
And everyone had waited too long to give it to me.
I looked at Ethan.
“Why Rachel?””
He shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
“You said Emily trusted her.””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t Rachel tell me everything?””
Ethan looked away.
“Because she was scared.””
I laughed quietly.
“Everyone was scared.””
The room went silent.
Because it was true.
Emily was scared.
Rachel was scared.
James was scared.
Even Ethan was scared.
But while everyone was afraid, my daughter had been living with the consequences.
I stood up.
“I need to see Rachel.””
Detective Cole nodded.
“We’ll go together.””
When we arrived at Rachel’s house, she opened the door and immediately knew why we were there.
Her face changed.
“You found it.””
I stared at her.
“You knew.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I knew you would eventually.””
“Eventually?””
My voice shook.
“Rachel, my daughter was hurt. She was afraid in my own house. Vanessa almost became her mother.””
“I know.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t know what that did to her.””
Rachel lowered her head.
“I know because I saw it.””
The anger inside me softened slightly.
She looked broken.
Not like someone hiding a secret.
Like someone carrying one.
“Come inside.””
We entered her living room.
She walked to a cabinet and pulled out a small box.
Inside were old photographs.
Letters.
Memories of a life I thought I understood.
She picked up a sealed envelope.
“Emily gave this to me two weeks before she died.””
I stared at it.
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
Rachel’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because she told me not to unless Vanessa became part of Lily’s life.””
I froze.
“She knew?””
Rachel nodded.
“She knew Vanessa would try.””
My chest tightened.
“Try what?””
Rachel handed me the envelope.
“Read it.””
My fingers trembled as I opened the letter.
Emily’s handwriting filled the page.
*Daniel,*
*If you are reading this, then my biggest fear has happened.*
I swallowed.
*Vanessa has found a way into our family.*
I closed my eyes.
Emily knew.
She knew everything.
*I need you to understand something. Lily is not a weakness. She is not a burden. She is not something anyone can use against you.*
I looked toward Rachel.
She was crying.
I continued.
*Vanessa believes people are valuable because of what they provide. She has spent years searching for a life she thinks she deserves.*
Then came the sentence that made my hands shake.
*She became interested in you because of your success. But she became obsessed with Lily because Lily was the only thing she could never replace.*
I stopped.
Rachel whispered:
The next paragraph was shorter.
**The truth about Lily is simple. She is your daughter. Not because of DNA.
Not because of paperwork. Because you chose her every single day.**
My vision blurred.
I had spent days terrified of losing something that was never in danger.
Lily was mine.
Always had been.
Then I reached the final lines.
*Daniel, if Vanessa ever hurts Lily, do not try to save the relationship. Save the child.*
I closed the letter.
A tear fell onto the paper.
Emily had known me better than anyone.
Even after death, she knew exactly what I would struggle with.
I looked at Rachel.
“What else?””
She hesitated.
“There’s one more thing.””
“What?””
She reached into the box.
She pulled out a small audio recorder.
My heart stopped.
“What is that?””
“Emily left it with me.””
“Why?””
“Because she recorded a conversation.””
“With who?””
Rachel looked at me.
“Vanessa.””
The room became silent.
I pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then Vanessa’s voice.
“You don’t understand, Emily. Daniel was supposed to be mine.””
My blood ran cold.
Emily’s voice followed.
“You don’t love him.””
“Yes, I do.””
“You love what he represents.””
A pause.
Then Vanessa said something that made everyone freeze.
“I will have the life you have.””
Emily’s voice became frightened.
“Vanessa, stop.””
Then Vanessa whispered:
“And if I can’t have it…”
The recording cut.
Detective Cole immediately looked up.
“Where’s the rest?””
Rachel shook her head.
“That’s all I had.””
But then Ethan stepped forward.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“There was another copy.””
“Where?””
He looked toward me.
“Vanessa has it.””
My heart sank.
“Why?””
“Because it contains the part she’s most afraid of.””
“What part?””
May you like
Ethan’s face went pale.
“The reason Emily died.””
