Chapter 5: The Lie Hidden in the Past

I didn’t sleep that night.

Vanessa’s message replayed in my mind over and over.

*Ask her about the night your wife died.*

It was cruel.

It was calculated.

And the worst part was that it worked.

Because there was one question I had buried for years.

A question I never wanted to ask.

A question about the last night of my wife Emily’s life.

The accident happened when Lily was two.

She was too young to remember.

At least, that was what everyone told me.

I had always believed the story.

Emily was driving home from her sister’s house.

A truck lost control.

A rainy road.

A terrible accident.

A life ended in seconds.

But Vanessa’s message opened a door I had kept locked.

And now I couldn’t stop thinking about what was behind it.

The next morning, I called Emily’s brother, James.

He answered after three rings.

“Daniel?””

“James, I need to ask you something.””

His voice changed.

“What happened?””

I looked at Lily playing in the backyard.

“Did Emily ever tell you she was worried about someone before she died?””

Silence.

Too much silence.

“James?””

Finally, he said:

“Why are you asking me this now?””

“Because I need the truth.””

He exhaled slowly.

“Daniel… I thought you knew.””

My heart sank.

“Knew what?””

“Emily was scared.””

The air left my lungs.

“Of who?””

“Someone close to you.””

I stood up.

“Who?””

James didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Vanessa.””

I felt like the ground moved beneath me.

“What?””

“I didn’t want to bring this up years ago.””

“Why?””

“Because Emily never accused her of anything.””

My hands shook.

“Then why would she be scared?””

James’s voice became quieter.

“She said Vanessa was obsessed with your life.””

I sat down.

That was impossible.

Vanessa had told me she barely knew Emily.

That they had only met once.

“James, are you sure?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Because Emily called me two days before the accident.””

My mind raced.

“What did she say?””

“She said Vanessa kept asking questions about your marriage.””

I looked at Lily.

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because after Emily died, you were broken.””

James paused.

“And then Vanessa appeared.””

That sentence hit me.

Because it was true.

Vanessa entered my life at exactly the moment I was vulnerable.

She knew how to comfort me.

She knew what to say.

She knew how to make me believe I had finally found peace.

I ended the call and immediately searched through old messages.

Years of conversations.

Thousands of forgotten words.

Then I found something.

A message from Emily.

Two days before the accident.

*“Daniel, please don’t dismiss what I’m telling you. I think Vanessa wants something from us.””*

I stared at the screen.

My hands went numb.

Why had I never seen this?

Because I never received it.

I checked the timestamp.

The message had been sent.

But never delivered.

My phone number had changed shortly before Emily died.

I had forgotten.

I had assumed she never replied.

But she had.

She had tried to warn me.

That afternoon, Marcus came over.

I showed him everything.

He read the message and looked up.

“Daniel…”

“I know.””

“This is bigger than the wedding.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

He sat down.

“What are you going to do?””

I looked toward Lily’s room.

“Find out the truth.””

That evening, I met Vanessa outside a coffee shop.

She arrived wearing sunglasses.

Like she was trying to hide from the world.

Or from me.

“You’re investigating me now?””

I stared at her.

“You knew Emily.””

Her expression changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

“You talked to James.””

“Yes.””

She looked away.

“You’re digging up things you don’t understand.””

“Then explain them.””

She crossed her arms.

“Emily was unstable.””

My jaw tightened.

“Don’t.””

“What?””

“Don’t talk about my wife like that.””

Vanessa sighed.

“She was paranoid.””

“Why did she think you wanted something from us?””

Vanessa went quiet.

Then she smiled slightly.

A cold, confident smile.

“You really want to know?””

“Yes.””

She leaned closer.

“Because Emily discovered something about me.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“What?””

Vanessa looked around.

Then whispered:

“Something that would have destroyed my life.””

I stepped closer.

“What did she discover?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Ask yourself one question, Daniel.””

“What?””

“If I was the reason your marriage ended…”

She paused.

“Why do you think Emily’s family never told you the whole story?””
