Chapter 12: The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
The police station felt colder than usual.
Or maybe I was just numb.
Because every answer I found created three more questions.
Detective Cole led me into a small room.
On the table was a file.
He didn’t sit.
Neither did I.
“Tell me.””
He opened the folder.
“The phone number that contacted you was connected to a woman named Claire Bennett.””
The name meant nothing.
“Who is she?””
Detective Cole looked at me.
“That’s the problem.””
He turned the file around.
The photograph inside made my breath stop.
It was a woman.
A woman I had never met.
But there was something familiar about her.
“Who is she?””
“Claire Bennett died seven years ago.””
I frowned.
“Then how did she call me?””
“That’s what we’re trying to figure out.””
I stared at the picture.
“Why does this involve Vanessa?””
Detective Cole pulled out another document.
“Because Claire Bennett was Emily’s closest friend before she died.””
I sat down.
Another connection.
Another person from Emily’s past.
“Why didn’t I know about her?””
“Because her name was removed from several records.””
“Removed?””
“Yes.””
I looked up.
“By who?””
Detective Cole was quiet.
Then:
“Someone with access.””
I felt a cold wave move through me.
“Vanessa.””
“We don’t have proof.””
“But?””
“But the pattern is concerning.””
I looked at the documents.
“What happened to Claire?””
Detective Cole flipped a page.
“Officially, she died in a car accident.””
My stomach tightened.
“Another accident?””
“Yes.””
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“Everyone around Emily dies in accidents.””
Detective Cole looked at me carefully.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
“You need to understand something.””
He pointed at the file.
“Someone has been controlling information around your family for years.””
I thought about Lily.
About the woman at school.
About Vanessa watching my house.
About Ethan meeting her.
Then I remembered the flash drive.
“I need to see Ethan.””
Detective Cole nodded.
“He’s already here.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He came voluntarily.””
“Why?””
“Because he says he needs to tell you the truth.””
A few minutes later, Ethan walked into the room.
He looked exhausted.
Not guilty.
Afraid.
“Daniel.””
I stared at him.
“You knew.””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
My jaw tightened.
“How much?””
“Enough.””
“Enough for what?””
“To know Vanessa was dangerous.””
I stood.
“And you said nothing?””
“I tried.””
“When?””
“After Emily died.””
I stared.
“What happened?””
Ethan sat down.
“Vanessa threatened me.””
“With what?””
He looked at Detective Cole.
Then back at me.
“She said if I told you anything, she would reveal what happened before Emily’s accident.””
My heart raced.
“What happened before?””
Ethan swallowed.
“Emily discovered Vanessa had been using her identity.””
“What?””
“She was pretending to be someone she wasn’t.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t understand.””
Ethan reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I found this in my office.””
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
Emily.
“She wrote this before she died.””
I opened it.
The first line made my hands shake.
*Daniel, if Vanessa ever tells you Lily is not yours, she is lying.*
I looked up.
Ethan’s eyes were full of regret.
“She knew Vanessa would use Lily against you.””
I kept reading.
The next sentence was the one that changed everything.
*“The truth about Lily is not her blood. The truth is why Vanessa wants everyone to believe it.””*
I stopped.
Because suddenly I understood.
This was never about whether Lily was my daughter.
It was about control.
Someone wanted me to doubt the one person I loved most.
Then the final line caught my eye.
*“Daniel, trust the person Vanessa fears the most.””*
I looked at Ethan.
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
He pointed to the envelope.
There was a name written on the back.
A name I had never expected.
May you like
A name that made Detective Cole go silent.
*Rachel.*
