Chapter 8: The Secret Behind the Marriage

Daniel dropped the photograph.

It landed faceup on the kitchen floor.

Nobody moved.

Margaret reached for his arm.

"Daniel, sit down.""

He stepped away.

"Don't tell me to sit down. Tell me what this means.""

His voice shook.

"Vanessa is Elena's daughter?""

Margaret nodded.

"Yes.""

"And Elena is my biological mother?""

"Yes.""

Daniel stared at the birth certificate.

"Then why did you raise me?""

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

"Because your father begged me to.""

She pulled out a chair.

"Your father had an affair with Elena before he married me. She became pregnant, but she was very young and frightened. She agreed to let us raise you.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Why wasn't I told?""

"Your father believed the truth would destroy the family.""

"Then why did Vanessa know?""

Margaret looked down.

"Because Elena never stopped looking for you.""

The apartment suddenly felt too small.

I stood near the doorway, listening as Daniel tried to process eleven years of lies.

"How did Vanessa find me?"" he asked.

"She came into your life through your brother.""

Margaret opened another folder.

"Matthew discovered the truth several years ago. He found letters between your father and Elena. He confronted Robert, who admitted everything.""

Daniel sat down.

"Matthew knew?""

"Yes. He wanted to tell you, but your father threatened to cut him out of the business.""

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"And Vanessa?""

"She was using the truth to get close to you.""

Margaret's voice became quieter.

"She wanted access to the Whitmore family fortune. She believed that if she married you, she could control the hotel empire through you.""

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

"But she knew we were related?""

"Yes.""

His face turned pale.

"How long?""

"From the beginning.""

I felt sick.

Margaret continued.

"Vanessa approached you at a charity event eight years ago. She knew exactly who you were. She used a different surname then. Her mother had given her another identity after Elena's relationship with your father ended.""

Daniel stood.

"Why didn't anyone stop her?""

"Matthew tried.""

Margaret opened another envelope.

Inside were printed emails.

One message was dated three weeks before Matthew's death.

The sender was Matthew.

The recipient was Richard Hayes.

I know what Vanessa is doing. I know about Elena. If Daniel discovers the truth, everything will collapse. We need to speak before this goes any further.

Richard's reply was only one sentence.

You should consider what happens to people who threaten the family.

Daniel read it twice.

Then he placed the paper on the table.

"Richard knew everything.""

Margaret nodded.

"He helped arrange Vanessa's marriage to you. He also helped your father hide the original birth records.""

Detective Miller photographed the emails.

"Mrs. Whitmore, why didn't you go to the police?""

Margaret looked at him.

"Because I did.""

She walked to a cabinet and removed an old newspaper clipping.

It described a car accident involving a woman named Margaret Lewis.

The article stated that the driver had died.

"I was declared dead because someone paid to have my identity changed. Richard arranged it. I spent months moving between safe houses.""

Miller frowned.

"Who helped you?""

"Matthew.""

Daniel looked up.

"What?""

"He discovered that Richard was using the family trust to finance the operation. Matthew helped me escape before they could silence me.""

Margaret took a deep breath.

"He told me he had hidden the final evidence in a place nobody would suspect.""

I remembered the silver key.

"The storage unit?""

She nodded.

"But the evidence wasn't all there.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"Where is it?""

Margaret looked at me.

"Emily, did Matthew ever give you anything besides the key?""

I thought back to that rainy night.

The leather folder.

The silver key.

The frightened expression.

Then I remembered something else.

Before Matthew left the break room, he had placed a small folded piece of paper beneath the folder.

I had assumed it was a receipt.

"Wait.""

I reached into my handbag and removed a small envelope.

I had kept it with the key all these months.

Inside was a faded hotel receipt.

On the back, Matthew had written:

*ROOM 1704. ASK FOR THE WALL THAT DOESN'T MATCH.*

Daniel looked at me.

"What's Room 1704?""

"The old executive suite at the hotel.""

Margaret immediately stood.

"No.""

Her voice was sharp.

"Don't go there.""

Detective Miller frowned.

"Why?""

Margaret gripped the edge of the table.

"Because that's where Robert kept the original records. It's where Elena stayed when she first came to Dallas.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Why would Matthew leave evidence there?""

"Because your father had a hidden safe behind the bedroom wall.""

Miller immediately contacted his team.

"We'll secure the room.""

Daniel grabbed his coat.

"I'm coming.""

"No," Miller said.

"You stay here with your mother.""

Daniel shook his head.

"That's my hotel.""

"And this is an active investigation.""

Before Daniel could argue, Margaret suddenly grabbed his wrist.

"Daniel, there's something else.""

He turned.

"What?""

She looked toward the window.

"Vanessa isn't the only person who knows about Room 1704.""

Her voice dropped.

"Your father used to take someone there after midnight. Someone who wasn't part of the family.""

Daniel frowned.

"Who?""

Margaret hesitated.

Then she said:

"Richard's wife.""

Miller's phone rang again.

He answered.

His expression changed almost immediately.

"Where?""

He listened.

Then he looked at Daniel.

"Mr. Whitmore, we have a serious problem.""

"What now?""

"Someone has already entered Room 1704.""

"Who?""

Miller lowered his voice.

"The hotel's security manager.""

Daniel went still.

"That's impossible. He's worked for me for fifteen years.""

The detective looked at his phone.

"We just received his personnel photograph.""

He turned the screen toward Daniel.

The man standing inside Room 1704 was holding a black leather folder.

Daniel recognized him.

So did Margaret.

May you like

It was the same man who had supposedly been driving the car that killed her.

And he was supposed to be dead.
