Chapter 13: The Signature That Was Never His

Daniel stared at the document on the desk.

His signature appeared beneath a paragraph transferring controlling ownership of the Whitmore hotel empire to a company called Whitmore Strategic Holdings.

The date was eleven months earlier.

The day Matthew died.

Richard Hayes watched him carefully.

"All you need to do is acknowledge the transfer, Daniel. Then we can put this entire nightmare behind us.""

Daniel looked up.

"You forged my signature.""

Richard sighed.

"Your signature was obtained legally.""

"I was unconscious in a hospital bed.""

"That doesn't change what happened.""

Detective Miller kept his weapon raised.

"Richard, step away from the desk.""

Richard laughed.

"Detective, you really don't understand the situation. Those documents are already registered. The money has already moved. Even if you arrest me, Daniel owns nothing.""

Vanessa placed the small blue bottle on the desk.

"Stop making this difficult, darling.""

Daniel looked at her.

"Don't call me that.""

Her expression hardened.

"You used to love that name.""

"I used to believe you loved me.""

Vanessa laughed.

"You were useful. There's a difference.""

Elena gasped.

Daniel's hands curled into fists.

"You knew who I was before you married me.""

"Of course I did.""

"And you knew we shared the same biological mother.""

Vanessa shrugged.

"Half-siblings. A technical inconvenience.""

Elena stepped forward.

"Vanessa, how could you?""

Vanessa turned toward her.

"Don't pretend to be a mother now. You abandoned me when I was a child.""

"I was threatened. I was seventeen.""

"You left me with nothing!""

"I tried to come back.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"Too late.""

Richard interrupted.

"Enough. We didn't come here to discuss family history.""

He pushed the document toward Daniel.

"Sign the acknowledgment.""

Daniel didn't move.

Richard looked at Vanessa.

She picked up the bottle.

"Perhaps you need a reminder of what happens when people refuse to cooperate.""

Detective Miller stepped forward.

"Put the bottle down.""

Vanessa smiled.

"Or what?""

Then she threw the bottle toward the floor.

It shattered.

A sharp chemical smell spread through the office.

Everyone stepped back.

In the confusion, one of Richard's men lunged toward Detective Miller.

The detective fired a warning shot into the ceiling.

"POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!""

The hallway erupted.

One officer tackled the second man.

Daniel grabbed Elena and pulled her behind the desk.

I ducked beside them.

Vanessa rushed toward the exit.

She nearly reached the hallway before an officer caught her arm.

"Let me go!""

She kicked backward, striking his leg.

"You're making a terrible mistake!""

He forced her hands behind her back.

Richard tried to escape through the adjoining office.

Detective Miller followed.

"Hayes! Stop!""

Richard turned and threw a metal desk lamp.

It struck the wall beside Miller.

He ran.

But an officer waiting near the stairwell intercepted him.

Within seconds, Richard was handcuffed.

Daniel slowly stood.

He looked at the document again.

Then at the broken bottle.

"Is it over?""

Miller shook his head.

"Not yet. We still need to establish how the ownership transfer happened and whether the signature is genuine.""

Daniel pointed toward the document.

"It isn't.""

"Then we'll prove it.""

The forensic team arrived twenty minutes later.

They photographed the office, collected the bottle fragments, and secured the documents.

Vanessa was taken outside first.

As she passed Daniel, she stopped.

"You think the hotel belongs to you?""

Daniel looked at her.

"It was never yours.""

She leaned closer.

"Ask your mother what happened to the money your father left you.""

Daniel frowned.

"What money?""

Vanessa smiled.

"Exactly.""

An officer pulled her forward.

Richard was escorted out moments later.

But before entering the police vehicle, he turned toward Daniel.

"Your father wasn't the only person who knew about the transfer.""

Daniel stared at him.

"Who else?""

Richard smiled.

"Someone signed as a witness.""

Then he disappeared into the vehicle.

I turned toward Detective Miller.

"Who witnessed the transfer?""

Miller looked at the document.

There was a name at the bottom.

*MARGARET WHITMORE.*

Daniel slowly turned toward his mother.

Elena looked equally shocked.

But before anyone could speak, Daniel's phone rang.

It was Margaret.

He answered immediately.

"Mom?""

Her voice was trembling.

"Daniel, I need you to listen carefully.""

"Did you witness the transfer?""

Silence.

Then Margaret whispered:

"Yes.""

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Why?""

"Because I thought I was saving your life.""

"How?""

She began crying.

"Your father told me that if I didn't sign, he would have you committed to a psychiatric hospital and declare you incapable of managing the company.""

Daniel gripped the phone.

"That was eleven months ago?""

"No, sweetheart. Eleven years ago.""

Daniel froze.

Margaret continued.

"Your father planned everything long before Matthew died. And there's something I never told you.""

"What?""

"Matthew wasn't the first person who tried to expose Richard.""

A pause.

Then she said:

"Your father died because he discovered the same secret.""

Daniel stared at the phone.

"Mom, my father died of a heart attack.""

May you like

Margaret's voice broke.

"No, Daniel. Your father was murdered too.""
