Chapter 11: The Woman Behind the Entire Conspiracy
Daniel read his mother's name three times.
Each time, his expression became harder to understand.
"That can't be right.""
Detective Miller examined the recovered document.
"Could be a false lead. We need to establish who created it and when.""
Daniel shook his head.
"My mother spent eleven years hiding from Richard. She warned me he wanted to kill me.""
"She also told us she knew where Matthew hid the evidence," I said.
Daniel looked at me.
"Why would she do that if she was responsible?""
Miller closed the laptop.
"Because someone may be manipulating the evidence. We don't accuse anyone until we establish the facts.""
We returned to the hotel with two additional police vehicles.
Outside, reporters had already gathered.
Camera crews crowded the entrance. Photographers shouted questions as Daniel stepped out.
"Mr. Whitmore! Did you threaten your brother?""
"Is your wife under arrest?""
"Did your family cover up a murder?""
Daniel kept walking.
Richard Hayes stood near the ballroom entrance, surrounded by reporters.
He wore a dark navy suit and a perfectly arranged expression of concern.
When he saw Daniel, he approached.
"Daniel. Thank God you're safe.""
Daniel stopped.
"Don't come near me.""
Richard lowered his voice.
"We need to talk privately.""
"About what? The recording you edited?""
Richard's expression barely changed.
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
"Then perhaps the police can explain it.""
Detective Miller stepped forward.
"Mr. Hayes, we have some questions for you.""
Richard looked at the cameras.
"Of course. But I think the public deserves an explanation first.""
He turned toward the reporters.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I have spent twenty years protecting the Whitmore family. Unfortunately, I can no longer remain silent.""
He held up a folder.
"Eleven months ago, Daniel Whitmore threatened his own brother. That conversation was recorded. Shortly afterward, Matthew died.""
The reporters began shouting.
Richard continued.
"I also have financial documents showing that Daniel authorized several transfers shortly before Matthew's death.""
Daniel stared at him.
"Those signatures were forged.""
Richard opened the folder.
"Then perhaps you'll explain them to a judge.""
A reporter pushed a microphone toward Daniel.
"Mr. Whitmore, did you threaten Matthew?""
Daniel took a breath.
"I don't remember making that statement. But I do know someone altered the recording.""
Richard gave a small, disappointed smile.
"Of course you don't remember.""
Then he turned toward me.
"And perhaps we should ask why a banquet waitress suddenly has access to confidential family documents.""
I stepped forward.
"Because your client tried to poison her husband in front of three hundred witnesses.""
Richard's expression hardened.
"Careful, young lady.""
"Why? Are you going to slap me too?""
Several reporters turned their cameras toward us.
Richard's composure slipped.
"You're interfering in matters you don't understand.""
I pulled out my phone.
"I understand what I recorded.""
Detective Miller immediately stepped beside me.
"Mr. Hayes, you are being questioned in connection with the investigation. I'd advise you to cooperate.""
Richard laughed.
"You cannot intimidate me with an edited video and a frightened employee.""
Daniel moved closer.
"Then let's discuss the money.""
He held up the financial documents recovered from the storage unit.
"Four million dollars transferred through a company you controlled. Payments to Dr. Price. And a series of transactions made while I was unconscious in the hospital.""
Richard's smile disappeared.
"You signed those documents.""
"I was drugged.""
"Prove it.""
Miller interrupted.
"That's enough. Mr. Hayes, come with us.""
Richard looked around.
For the first time, he appeared genuinely worried.
Then he did something unexpected.
He reached into his jacket and removed a small folded document.
"Before you arrest me, perhaps you should ask Daniel about the original adoption papers.""
Daniel frowned.
"What adoption papers?""
Richard handed the document to a reporter.
"His mother wasn't simply hiding his birth records. She signed an agreement transferring all parental rights to Robert Whitmore.""
Daniel looked at Miller.
"Is that true?""
The detective took the document.
"We'll authenticate it.""
Richard continued.
"And there's something else. Margaret Whitmore received money from Matthew's estate shortly before his death.""
Daniel shook his head.
"That's impossible.""
Richard smiled.
"One million dollars. Transferred into an account under her new identity.""
The reporters began shouting again.
I watched Daniel's face.
He looked betrayed all over again.
But something about Richard's behavior bothered me.
He wasn't trying to defend himself anymore.
He was deliberately redirecting attention toward Margaret.
"Detective," I said quietly, "he wants us looking at Daniel's mother.""
Miller nodded slightly.
Then his phone rang.
He stepped aside and answered.
A few seconds later, he returned.
"Mr. Whitmore, we need to speak privately.""
"What happened?""
"We contacted the bank associated with your mother's account.""
Daniel stiffened.
"And?""
"The account was opened using a false identity.""
Richard suddenly laughed.
"Interesting, isn't it?""
Miller looked at him.
"Unfortunately for you, Mr. Hayes, the account was also accessed from your office.""
Richard's smile vanished.
Daniel stepped closer.
"You stole my mother's identity?""
Richard didn't answer.
Miller continued.
"The transfer was made three weeks after Matthew died. The money was moved through an account connected to a company you own.""
Richard straightened his jacket.
"Those records are circumstantial.""
"Perhaps. But they're enough to bring you in for questioning.""
Two officers approached.
Richard raised his hands.
"You're making a mistake.""
Miller nodded toward the exit.
"We'll see.""
As the officers escorted him away, Richard suddenly turned toward Daniel.
"Ask Margaret what happened to Elena.""
Daniel froze.
"What?""
Richard smiled coldly.
"Your biological mother didn't disappear because of Vanessa. She disappeared because Margaret wanted her gone.""
Then he was led through the doors.
I looked at Daniel.
He was already reaching for his phone.
"Call my mother.""
He dialed.
It rang four times.
No answer.
He tried again.
Nothing.
Then a message appeared.
*UNKNOWN NUMBER: STOP LOOKING FOR ELENA. MARGARET HAS ALREADY MADE THAT MISTAKE ONCE.*
Daniel stared at the screen.
A second message arrived.
It contained a photograph.
A woman was sitting inside a parked car.
Her face was partly hidden by the steering wheel.
But I recognized her from the old photograph.
Elena Reed.

Underneath the image was one sentence.
