Chapter 12: The Mother in the Photograph

Daniel didn't wait for Detective Miller to finish reading the message.

He grabbed his keys.

"Where are you going?"" I asked.

"To find Elena.""

Miller blocked the exit.

"You're not going anywhere without protection.""

"That's my mother.""

"And someone is threatening her life. Running into an unknown location will make things worse.""

Daniel clenched his jaw.

"Then tell me what to do.""

Miller studied the photograph.

"First, we identify where it was taken.""

The image showed Elena sitting inside a parked car.

Behind her was a building with a faded red sign.

I enlarged the photograph on my phone.

"Wait. I recognize that place.""

Miller turned.

"Where?""

"It's the old Whitmore medical center. The building was sold years ago, but the sign is still there.""

Daniel frowned.

"How do you know?""

"Some of the banquet staff used to deliver catering there before it closed. It's about twenty minutes from downtown.""

Miller immediately contacted his team.

Within minutes, we were heading toward the abandoned medical center.

The building stood behind a row of neglected trees.

Its windows were dark. The parking lot was cracked, and weeds had grown through the pavement.

Two police vehicles stopped near the entrance.

Miller instructed the officers to secure the perimeter.

Daniel got out before the vehicle had fully stopped.

"Elena!""

His voice echoed across the empty parking lot.

No answer.

We entered through a side door.

The smell of dust and disinfectant hung in the air.

A reception desk stood near the entrance.

Old patient files were scattered across the floor.

I noticed a light coming from the hallway.

"Detective.""

Miller raised his hand.

We moved slowly.

At the end of the corridor was a door marked STAFF ONLY.

It was slightly open.

Daniel pushed it.

Inside was a small office.

A woman sat beside the window.

She was older than the woman in the photograph, with silver strands in her dark hair.

She looked up.

Daniel stopped breathing.

"Elena?""

The woman stood.

For several seconds, they simply stared at each other.

Then she covered her mouth.

"Daniel.""

He approached slowly.

"You're my mother?""

Elena nodded.

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"I wanted to meet you for so many years.""

Daniel's expression twisted.

"Why didn't you come?""

"I tried.""

"Everyone told me you were gone.""

"I know.""

He looked toward the floor.

"Vanessa knew who I was.""

Elena closed her eyes.

"Yes.""

Daniel took a step backward.

"She knew I was her brother.""

"Yes.""

"She married me anyway.""

Elena began crying harder.

"I never wanted that to happen.""

Daniel's voice rose.

"How could you let her get close to me?""

Elena shook her head.

"I didn't know she had found you until it was too late.""

She reached into her handbag and removed an old photograph.

It showed her holding a baby.

Daniel took it.

"That's me?""

"Yes.""

He stared at the tiny face.

Then he looked at her.

"Why did you give me away?""

Elena sat down.

"Because I was seventeen. Your father was married, and his family threatened to destroy me if I told anyone about you.""

Daniel's face hardened.

"So you let Margaret raise me.""

"She promised you would have a good life.""

"She told me you were dead.""

"She believed it was the only way to protect you.""

Detective Miller stepped forward.

"Ms. Reed, we need to ask you about Matthew's death.""

Elena's expression changed.

"Matthew knew everything.""

"What did he know?""

She looked toward Daniel.

"Your father didn't simply hide your birth records. He changed the ownership structure of the Whitmore empire to protect your inheritance.""

Daniel frowned.

"What inheritance?""

Elena pulled another document from her bag.

"Your father left you controlling ownership of the company. Matthew was supposed to manage it until you were ready.""

Daniel examined the papers.

"Then why did Vanessa and Richard want the documents?""

"Because the ownership transfer was never completed properly. They needed your signature.""

I remembered the recording.

The medication.

The hospital.

The financial transfers.

"They were trying to get Daniel to sign something while he was confused," I said.

Elena nodded.

"Yes. Richard had prepared a document transferring the controlling shares to a private holding company. Vanessa wanted Daniel to sign it before Matthew could expose the scheme.""

Daniel looked at her.

"And Matthew?""

"He found the original documents. He confronted Richard. That was when everything became dangerous.""

Miller opened his notebook.

"Did you see who killed him?""

Elena hesitated.

Then she nodded.

"I did.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Who?""

"Vanessa.""

The room went silent.

Elena continued.

"Matthew came to my apartment that night. He was frightened. He told me Richard had been giving Daniel medication without his knowledge. He wanted me to take the evidence to the police.""

Her voice trembled.

"But Vanessa followed him.""

"What happened?""

"They argued in the parking lot. Matthew told her he was going to expose the family secret. She took something from her purse.""

Elena covered her face.

"I heard the crash. When I came outside, Matthew was on the ground.""

Daniel gripped the back of a chair.

"Did you call the police?""

"I tried. Richard arrived before they did. He told me if I spoke, he'd make sure Daniel suffered the same fate.""

Miller's expression hardened.

"Why didn't you come forward?""

"Because I saw what happened to Margaret. I knew Richard could make people disappear.""

I looked at Elena.

"Then why did you send that photograph?""

"I didn't.""

Everyone turned toward her.

She shook her head.

"I've been hiding here for three days. Someone must have taken that photograph without my knowledge.""

Miller immediately checked the windows.

"Someone knew you were here.""

A loud crash came from the hallway.

Daniel turned.

"Police?""

No answer.

Then the lights went out.

A door slammed somewhere behind us.

Detective Miller drew his weapon.

"Stay together!""

A flashlight beam swept across the office.

Then a woman's voice spoke from the darkness.

"Daniel?""

He froze.

I recognized the voice immediately.

Vanessa.

"Darling, you really should have stayed at home.""

A second voice followed.

Richard Hayes.

"Now that everyone is finally together, we can finish this properly.""

The emergency lights flickered on.

Vanessa stood in the doorway, holding a small black case.

Richard stood behind her.

Two men blocked the hallway.

Detective Miller raised his weapon.

"Don't move!""

Vanessa smiled.

"You're making a mistake, Detective.""

She opened the case.

Inside was a small glass bottle.

The same dark blue bottle I had seen at the gala.

Daniel stepped in front of Elena.

"What do you want?""

Vanessa looked at him.

"Your signature.""

"And if I refuse?""

She lifted the bottle.

"Then your mother gets to discover what happened to Matthew.""

Richard placed a document on the desk.

"Sign the transfer, Daniel. Everything can end tonight.""

Daniel looked at the papers.

Then he noticed something written at the bottom.

A signature already appeared beneath his name.

He stared at it.

"That's my signature.""

Richard smiled.

"Exactly.""

Daniel looked at the date.

It was dated eleven months earlier.

The day Matthew died.

And suddenly, Daniel understood why everyone had spent so long convincing him that he couldn't remember what happened in the hospital.

May you like

He hadn't merely forgotten signing the document.

*Someone had already stolen his entire inheritance while he was unconscious.*
