Chapter 14: The Woman Who Sold Our Family
The address led to an abandoned maternity clinic on the outskirts of Atlanta.
I recognized the building from Dr. Price's description. The sign had been removed, and plywood covered the windows. A faded notice on the entrance announced that the property had been condemned.
I arrived with Detective Alvarez, Robert, and two officers. Lily remained with the Hales under police protection.
Before entering, Detective Alvarez stopped me.
“Mr. Bennett, I need you to understand that Vanessa may be inside, and we don't know whether she has assistance.””
“Understood.””
“If we find her, let us handle the arrest.””
“I will.””
She gave me a skeptical look.
“I'm serious.””
“So am I.””
We entered through a side door.
Dust covered the reception desk. Rusted examination tables stood in a hallway, and old medical charts remained scattered across the floor.
At the end of the corridor, a light glowed beneath a closed door.
Detective Alvarez signaled for the officers to take position.
Then she knocked.
“Police. Open the door.””
Silence.
She knocked again.
The door opened slowly.
Vanessa stood inside, wearing jeans and a dark sweater. Her hair was pulled back, and she looked as though she hadn't slept in days.
When she saw me, she smiled faintly.
“You came.””
I stared at her.
“You threatened my daughter. You helped erase a child's identity. And you still think you can control what happens next?””
Her smile vanished.
“I never wanted Sophie hurt.””
“Then why did you send those teenagers after her?””
“I needed you frightened enough to sign the agreement.””
“You could have spoken to me.””
“I did. For months. You wouldn't listen.””
“So you decided to use my eight-year-old daughter?””
Vanessa looked away.
Detective Alvarez stepped forward.
“Vanessa Reed, we need you to come with us for questioning regarding the kidnapping, threats, and suspected fraud.””
Vanessa raised both hands.
“I'll cooperate.””
She turned toward me.
“But before I go, you deserve to know what your father did.””
“I've heard enough about my father.””
“No. You haven't heard what he did to Claire.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“Then tell me.””
Vanessa walked toward a metal table and picked up a thick folder.
“Your father discovered the fraudulent transfers before Claire did. He authorized some of them himself. When he realized the investors planned to take control of the company, he tried to withdraw. But by then, too many people had evidence against him.””
“And Claire?””
“She found the ledger and threatened to expose everyone. Your father wanted to negotiate. Daniel wanted her silenced.””
“Silenced how?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Daniel arranged for Claire to disappear. He believed that if she vanished, the investigation would collapse.””
“Where did he take her?””
“I don't know the exact location. But I know what happened afterward.””
She opened the folder.
Inside were photographs of Claire at different locations. Some were grainy security images. Others showed her entering buildings or sitting in parked cars.
The earliest photograph was dated four years earlier.
The latest was dated six weeks ago.
Claire had been moving between safe houses.
“You've been tracking her,” I said.
“Daniel was. I was given copies.””
“Why?””
“Because he wanted me to find out whether she had contacted you.””
I looked at the photographs.
“Did you ever speak to her?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Once.””
“When?””
“Two years ago.””
“What did she say?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“She said she would forgive me if I helped her get Lily back.””
I stared at her.
“Why didn't you?””
“Because Daniel threatened to expose my involvement in the adoption. He said he would make sure I went to prison.””
“So you chose to protect yourself.””
“Yes.””
The honesty was almost unbearable.
I stepped closer.
“You made my daughter crawl on the pavement. You threatened to make her disappear. You used my brother's supposed death and my wife's disappearance to manipulate me into signing away a foundation built to protect children.””
Vanessa lowered her head.
“I know.””
“No. You know the words. You don't know what you've done.””
She began to cry.
“I loved you, Marcus.””
I looked at her for a long moment.
“Maybe you loved the life you thought I could give you. But you never loved the people who came with it.””
Detective Alvarez took the folder from Vanessa.
“Who else is involved?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Richard Collins financed the operation. Evelyn handled the documents. Daniel organized the disappearances.””
“And my father?””
“He helped conceal the original transfers, then tried to undo the damage. He wasn't innocent, but he wasn't the person who ordered Claire taken.””
I thought of the recording at the bank.
The one that had made it sound as though my father had ordered another child removed.
“Then who said the child must be removed before Claire returned?””
Vanessa stared at me.
“Evelyn.””
I froze.
“But the recording sounded like my father's voice.””
“Because it was edited together. Evelyn used an old recording of your father and spliced it into a conversation. She wanted you to believe he was responsible so you would stop looking for her.””
Detective Alvarez exchanged a glance with one of the officers.
“Can you prove that?””
Vanessa nodded toward the folder.
“The original recordings are in there. I kept copies because I knew Daniel would eventually turn on me.””
The detective took the folder.
“Then you'll need to provide a formal statement.””
Vanessa looked at me one last time.
“Marcus, I can tell you where Claire is.””
My heart lurched.
“Where?””
“She moved to a safe house near Savannah. But Daniel knows the location, too. If he's received the message that you found Lily, he'll go there.””
I pulled out my phone.
“Robert, contact the team in Savannah. We need to locate Claire immediately.””
He was already making the call.
Vanessa took a step toward me.
“There's one more thing.””
I stared at her.
“What now?””
“Daniel didn't arrange Claire's disappearance because of the money.””
“Then why?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Because Claire discovered that Daniel was Lily's biological father.””
The room went silent.
I looked at the photographs again.
Lily's birth records had been altered. Claire had been forced to surrender her child. Daniel had hidden the financial ledger.
And all this time, the man I had mourned as a brother had been the father of the child everyone was trying to erase.
Detective Alvarez placed handcuffs around Vanessa's wrists.
As the officers led her away, she turned back.
“Marcus, if Daniel reaches Claire first, he won't let her tell you the rest.””
“What rest?””
Vanessa's face went pale.
“The truth about Sophie.””
Before I could question her, my phone rang.
Robert's voice came through, urgent and strained.
“Mr. Bennett, we located the safe house.””
“Is Claire there?””
“No, sir.””
“Then where is she?””
“We found signs of a struggle. There's blood on the floor, a broken phone, and a message written on the wall.””
“What does it say?””
Robert hesitated.
Then he read the words aloud.
*Bring Lily to the old church, or Claire dies.*
I closed my eyes.
May you like
The nightmare wasn't over.
It was only getting closer to my daughter.
