Chapter 13: The Daughter Claire Was Forced to Abandon
The photograph stayed on my phone for nearly a minute before I could bring myself to show it to anyone.
Claire stood outside a small white house, holding a newborn wrapped in a yellow blanket. She looked exhausted, but she was smiling. Behind her, a man stood near the doorway, his face hidden by shadow.
On the back, someone had written the date Sophie was born.
One daughter was never the only one.
I called Dr. Price again.
“Who was the man standing behind Claire?””
“I don't know,” he answered.
“The photograph wasn't taken at the clinic. I received a copy from someone who said it came from a private family archive.””
“Who sent it?””
“An attorney representing Anna Carter.””
“Anna is dead.””
“That is what the official records claim.””
I gripped the phone.
“Doctor, I need you to tell me everything you know. No more half-truths.””
He sighed.
“Twelve years ago, Claire came to the clinic under a different name. Vanessa Reed brought her in. Claire was frightened, but she was conscious and knew exactly what she was doing. She gave birth to a healthy girl.””
“Lily.””
“Yes. After the delivery, Vanessa told us the child would be placed with a family that could protect her. Claire protested. She wanted to keep the baby.””
My chest tightened.
“What happened?””
“The clinic director arrived. He told Claire that the child would be taken regardless of her wishes. He showed her documents suggesting that someone had already signed away her parental rights.””
“Did she sign anything?””
“Not in my presence.””
“Then how did the adoption happen?””
“I believe the paperwork was forged.””
I looked toward Lily, who sat beside Rebecca at the kitchen table. She couldn't hear the doctor's words, but she seemed to sense that something terrible was being uncovered.
“Why would Claire agree to any of this?”” I asked.
Dr. Price hesitated.
“Because Vanessa threatened her.””
“With what?””
“Your life.””
I closed my eyes.
The doctor continued.
“Vanessa told Claire that you were in danger. She claimed your father had been involved in illegal financial transfers and that you would be imprisoned if the evidence became public. She said that if Claire kept the baby, the people behind the scheme would use the child to force you into silence.””
“And Claire believed her?””
“She had no reason not to. Vanessa had been helping her for months.””
I remembered the woman I had intended to marry, the one who had sat beside Sophie at bedtime and promised she would never let anyone hurt her.
I had mistaken access for affection.
“Where is Claire now?”” I asked.
“I don't know. But I remember one thing she said before she left the clinic.””
“What?””
“She told Vanessa, ‘If you ever make me choose between my children and Marcus, I will come back for all of them.’”
The call ended.
I sat motionless for several seconds.
Then Lily spoke.
“Mr. Bennett?””
I turned toward her.
“Did my mother know where I was?””
I swallowed.
“I believe she was trying to find you.””
“Then why didn't she come?””
I didn't have an answer.
Rebecca placed a hand on Lily's shoulder.
“Sweetheart, we don't know everything yet.””
Lily pulled away gently.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
She stood, picked up her violin case, and walked into the next room.
I watched her go.
She was twelve years old, and in less than a week, strangers had turned her entire childhood into a question.
I couldn't undo that.
But I could make sure the people responsible never got to decide her future again.
Detective Alvarez arrived that afternoon with two officers. I showed her the photograph, the DNA report, and Dr. Price's statement.
She studied the evidence.
“Mr. Bennett, this could establish a pattern of identity fraud, coercion, and unlawful adoption practices. But we need to verify the clinic records and determine who falsified them.””
“Can you bring Vanessa in?””
“We can request an interview. If we establish probable cause for specific offenses, we'll pursue the appropriate warrants.””
“She's already threatened Sophie.””
“I know. We're treating that allegation seriously.””
She paused.
“There's another development. The vehicle connected to the kidnapping was found abandoned near a warehouse. We recovered a fingerprint from the driver's door.””
“Whose?””
“We're waiting for confirmation.””
Before she left, I asked her to arrange protection for the Hales and Lily.
Then I called Robert.
“I want every piece of evidence connected to Vanessa preserved. Every recording, every message, every financial transfer. Nothing gets deleted.””
“Understood.””
“And find out where she went after leaving the building.””
“We're tracing her known contacts.””
I ended the call and went to sit beside Lily.
She was holding her violin, drawing the bow across the strings without playing a note.
“May I sit here?”” I asked.
She nodded.
For a while, neither of us spoke.
Finally, she said, “If Claire is my mother, does that mean Sophie is my sister?””
“Yes.””
“Does she know about me?””
“She knows we're looking for answers.””
Lily turned the violin in her hands.
“Will she hate me?””
“No.””
“How do you know?””
“Because Sophie has spent her whole life trying to make people feel welcome, even when they haven't been kind to her.””
Lily looked down.
“I'm not sure I know how to be someone's sister.””
I smiled sadly.
“Neither did Sophie, before she met you.””
A knock sounded at the front door.
Robert entered with a tablet.
“Sir, the fingerprint came back.””
I stood.
“Whose?””
“Vanessa's.””
“And the vehicle?””
“Registered to a shell company associated with Collins Holdings.””
I looked at Lily.
The evidence was becoming clearer, but the motive remained tangled.
Then Robert opened another file.
“We also found a transfer from the same company to a private account in the Cayman Islands. The transfer was made forty-eight hours before Sophie was threatened at school.””
“Who owns the account?””
Robert hesitated.
“It's registered to a trust managed by Evelyn Shaw.””
I stared at him.
“Evelyn?””
“Yes, sir. But there's something else. The account received money from another source the same day.””
He turned the tablet toward me.
The sender's name appeared on the screen.
*Daniel Bennett.*
My brother was alive, or someone was using his identity again.
Before I could respond, Lily reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“I found this inside my violin case,” she said.
“Where did it come from?””
“I don't know. It wasn't there yesterday.””
I unfolded it.
The message was short.
If you want to know why your mother disappeared, come to the place where the first daughter was born.
At the bottom was an address.
May you like
And beneath the address, a name.
*Vanessa Reed.*
