Chapter 12: The Woman Who Came Back From the Dead

I couldn't answer Lily's question.

Not immediately.

I had spent years believing I understood my family. I knew who my parents were, who my brother had been, and who I had married.

Now every piece of that history was collapsing beneath me.

Lily stood in front of me, holding a note that suggested she might be my daughter.

Rebecca moved beside her protectively.

“Lily, sweetheart, let's sit down.””

But Lily kept looking at me.

“Are you my father?””

I lowered myself into the chair opposite her.

“I don't know yet.””

Her face fell.

“Then why are you here?””

“Because I believe someone has been lying to both of us. And I want to find the truth without hurting you.””

She glanced at Rebecca.

“Mom, did you know?””

Rebecca shook her head.

“No, baby. I swear I didn't.””

Lily's shoulders relaxed slightly.

I continued carefully.

“Do you remember your biological mother?””

“Not clearly.””

“What do you remember?””

“A song. A silver bracelet. And someone telling me to hide under a bed.””

Thomas exchanged a worried look with his wife.

I leaned forward.

“Who told you to hide?””

Lily rubbed her hands together.

“I don't know. I was very little. I remember a man shouting. Then the woman who sang to me said I had to be quiet.””

“Did she call you Lily?””

“No. She called me something else.””

“What?””

Lily closed her eyes.

“Sweetheart.””

My throat tightened.

Claire used to call Sophie that.

But it was a common term of affection. It proved nothing.

I took a slow breath.

“Lily, I would like to arrange a DNA test. Only if you're comfortable with it, and only with Rebecca and Thomas's permission.””

Rebecca nodded.

“We'll do whatever is necessary to help her understand her history.””

Lily hesitated.

“Will the test tell me who my mother is?””

“It may help establish your biological relationships,” I explained.

“But we'll still need to investigate what happened.””

She thought about that.

Then she nodded.

“Okay.””

I arranged for an independent laboratory to collect samples that afternoon. Rebecca insisted on accompanying Lily, and I agreed.

While we waited for the results, I called Detective Alvarez and told her what we had discovered.

“Mr. Bennett,” she said, “we need to take this slowly. If Lily was placed under a protected identity, there may be legal restrictions around the records. We also need to establish whether anyone has threatened her directly.””

“Vanessa visited the house three weeks ago.””

“That changes things. I'll send an officer to speak with the Hales and document the visit.””

“There's another issue. Someone is using my father's name to conceal the circumstances of Lily's adoption.””

“Do you have evidence?””

“Letters and recorded conversations.””

“Preserve everything. Don't confront the people involved until we've reviewed the material.””

I promised I would cooperate.

Then I called my father.

He answered with a tired sigh.

“You found the girl.””

“Yes. Her name is Lily Hale.””

He was silent.

“Did you know she might be my daughter?””

“No.””

“Did you know Claire was involved in her adoption?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I didn't know whether Claire had been able to protect her. I thought the less you knew, the safer you would be.””

I gripped the phone.

“You keep deciding what everyone else is allowed to know. You decided for Claire. You decided for Daniel. You decided for me.””

“I know.””

“Then tell me the truth about Lily.””

My father took a breath.

“Her biological mother was named Anna Carter. She worked in the accounting department at Bennett Industries. She discovered the fraudulent transfers and began collecting evidence.””

“And Claire helped her?””

“Yes. They became close. When Anna died, Claire believed someone had deliberately targeted her.””

“Was she right?””

“I don't know.””

“Did you know Anna was pregnant?””

“No.””

“Then why did you arrange Lily's adoption?””

“Because Daniel came to me with a threat. He said that if the child remained connected to Anna's records, she could be used to identify the people involved in the fraud. He insisted that moving her was the only way to protect her.””

“Did you verify that?””

“No.””

I closed my eyes.

My father had built an empire by demanding proof from everyone except himself.

“And Claire?””

“She tried to stop Daniel. She believed he was going too far. When she disappeared, I thought she had taken Lily with her.””

“Why would she do that?””

“Because she was afraid Daniel would use the child against her.””

I ended the call.

The DNA results arrived two days later.

I opened the secure report in Evelyn's former legal office, now under the supervision of Detective Alvarez.

The laboratory had tested my sample against Lily's.

The result was clear.

I was not Lily's biological father.

But the report contained another finding.

Lily was a close biological relative of Claire Bennett.

The probability of a maternal relationship was overwhelmingly high.

I read the conclusion twice.

Lily wasn't my daughter.

She was Claire's.

Which meant that Claire had a child before Sophie—or had given birth to another child during the years I believed she was living a normal life.

I drove to the Hales' home immediately.

Lily sat at the kitchen table, tapping her fingers against a glass.

Rebecca looked up when I entered.

“Did you get the results?””

I nodded.

Lily's voice trembled.

“Am I your daughter?””

“No,” I said gently.

“But the test shows that you're closely related to Claire. Your biological mother may be my wife.””

Lily stared at me.

“Your wife?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did she leave me?””

I sat beside her.

“I don't know. But I intend to find out.””

Lily pulled the silver bracelet from beneath her sleeve.

I'd seen it in the photograph of Claire holding the baby.

The bracelet had a tiny engraved inscription.

*C.B. — Always yours.*

My hands shook.

“Where did you get that?””

“It was in the box with my adoption papers.””

I looked at Rebecca.

“Was there anything else?””

She shook her head.

“No. Just the bracelet and the letter.””

Lily turned it over.

“There's writing on the inside.””

I leaned closer.

The engraving was tiny, but I could make it out.

For Lily, from Mom. October 2014.

Claire had given birth to Lily twelve years earlier.

Two years before Sophie was born.

I sat back, trying to understand what that meant.

Claire had never told me about another child.

Not before our marriage. Not during our life together.

Either she had hidden a pregnancy from me, or someone had stolen a child from her and erased the evidence.

My phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

I answered.

“Marcus Bennett?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Dr. Samuel Price. I worked at a private clinic in Atlanta twelve years ago. I was told you were looking into the Carter case.””

My pulse quickened.

“What do you know?””

“I signed a medical report that was later altered. I have spent years trying to correct it.””

“What report?””

“The report claiming Anna Carter gave birth to a stillborn child.””

I stared at Lily.

Dr. Price continued.

“She didn't. The baby was born alive, and the mother survived the delivery.””

“Then why was the death certificate issued?””

“Because someone paid the clinic director to falsify the records.””

“Who?””

The doctor hesitated.

“I can tell you in person. But you need to understand something first.””

“What?””

“The woman listed as the baby's mother wasn't Anna Carter.””

I felt the room tilt.

“Who was she?””

Dr. Price's voice dropped to a whisper.

“Claire Bennett.””

I couldn't breathe.

“That's impossible. Claire never told me she was pregnant.””

“I know what the records say. But I personally delivered that baby.””

“Then why was Anna Carter listed as the mother?””

“Because the woman who brought Claire to the clinic told us to use that name.””

“Who brought her?””

The doctor paused.

Then he gave me a name.

“Vanessa Reed.””

I looked at Lily, who was tracing the bracelet with her fingertips.

My fiancée hadn't merely known about Claire's disappearance.

She had been there when Claire gave birth to another child.

And if the doctor was telling the truth, Vanessa had helped erase that child's identity before Claire ever disappeared.

I ended the call and immediately contacted Detective Alvarez.

Then Lily spoke quietly beside me.

“Mr. Bennett?””

I turned toward her.

“Did my mother really want me?””

I reached for her hand.

“Yes,” I said, although my heart was breaking.

“I believe she did.””

Lily swallowed hard.

“Then why did she leave me with strangers?””

Before I could answer, my phone vibrated.

A message appeared from Claire's old number.

It contained a single photograph.

Claire was standing outside a small white house, holding a newborn baby.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written a date.

The date Sophie had been born.

Beneath it were six words.

*One daughter was never the only one.*
