Chapter 8: The Doctor Who Changed My Life

The name on the paper belonged to someone I remembered.

Not personally.

But from stories.

Dr. Michael Hayes.

My mother used to mention him when I was younger.

“He was kind to us,” she would say.

“He helped me when nobody else would.””

I used to imagine him as an old family friend.

Someone who cared.

Someone good.

Now I stared at his signature on a document that suggested he had helped erase my identity.

“I don’t understand.””

My voice sounded distant.

Daniel watched me carefully.

“Neither did Sarah.””

Gabriel picked up the paper.

“Are you sure this is real?””

Daniel nodded.

“I spent months looking.””

“Where did you find it?””

“In an old archive.””

Gabriel looked at him.

“An archive?””

“Richard Bennett had private records stored away.””

“Why?””

“Insurance.””

I looked at the papers.

“My grandfather kept evidence against himself?””

Daniel gave a bitter smile.

“Powerful people often believe they can control everything.””

I stood.

“I need to find Dr. Hayes.””

Gabriel immediately shook his head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“No?””

“You don’t know what he’s involved in.””

“I know he knows what happened to my mother.””

Gabriel stepped closer.

“And I know I just found you.””

His voice softened.

“I’m not losing you.””

The words surprised me.

Because a part of me had waited twenty-three years to hear them.

I looked away.

“You don’t get to protect me because you feel guilty.””

His expression changed.

“I know.””

“Then don’t act like you’re my father yet.””

The sentence hurt him.

I saw it.

But I needed him to understand.

A DNA test could prove biology.

It couldn’t create twenty-three years of memories.

It couldn’t replace birthdays.

School events.

The nights I cried for a person who didn’t know I existed.

Gabriel nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

The honesty made it harder to stay angry.

“I don’t know how to do this.””

Neither did I.

That was the truth.

A few hours later, we found Dr. Hayes.

Not in a hospital.

Not in an office.

In a small retirement community outside the city.

He opened the door and immediately recognized Gabriel.

His face changed.

“Oh no.””

Gabriel stepped forward.

“Dr. Hayes.””

The old man looked past him.

Then saw me.

His expression collapsed.

“Oh my God.””

Nobody spoke.

Finally, he whispered:

“Sarah’s daughter.””

I felt a chill.

“You knew?””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

“How?””

He looked at Gabriel.

“I helped deliver her.””

My hands tightened.

“Then why did you sign those papers?””

His face filled with shame.

“I was scared.””

“Of who?””

He looked around the hallway.

Like even now, he expected someone to appear.

“Richard Bennett.””

Gabriel’s jaw tightened.

“My father threatened you?””

Dr. Hayes nodded.

“He told me if I didn’t cooperate, he would destroy my career.””

“And you listened?””

The doctor looked down.

“I was a coward.””

I wanted to hate him.

But he looked like someone who had spent decades punishing himself.

“What happened that night?””

Dr. Hayes slowly sat down.

“Sarah gave birth early.””

I held my breath.

“She was exhausted. But happy.””

He looked at me.

“She held you and wouldn’t let anyone take you.””

A tear escaped my eye.

“Then what?””

“Richard came.””

Gabriel went still.

“He came to the hospital?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Dr. Hayes looked at him.

“Because he knew you were going to leave him.””

The doctor’s voice became quieter.

“He didn’t care about Sarah.””

A pause.

“He cared about controlling his son.””

The words hit Gabriel.

“What did he do?””

Dr. Hayes looked at me.

“He made Sarah believe Gabriel had chosen Vivian.””

I felt sick.

“How?””

“He showed her a photograph.””

“Of what?””

“Gabriel and Vivian.””

My father looked confused.

“I never took one.””

Dr. Hayes nodded.

“Exactly.””

The room went silent.

“Because it was fake.””

My heart raced.

Richard had created a lie.

A perfect one.

A lie that destroyed everything.

But then Dr. Hayes said something that changed the entire story.

“Sarah discovered the truth.””

“When?””

“The morning she disappeared.””

Gabriel stepped closer.

“What did she find?””

Dr. Hayes looked terrified.

“She found out Vivian wasn’t the only person Richard was controlling.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

The doctor looked at me.

“It means your mother wasn’t running from Richard Bennett.””

A pause.

“She was running from someone inside her own family.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“Who?””

Dr. Hayes looked directly at him.

Then whispered:

“Daniel.””

My uncle stepped back.

“What?””

May you like

The doctor’s hands shook.

“Sarah found proof that you helped Richard hide her.””
