Chapter 12: The Man Who Protected the Lie
The darkness inside the house felt alive.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Thomas Reed stood outside, calling Sarah’s name like he had done it a hundred times before.
Like he knew she would eventually come out.
Gabriel moved quietly toward the door.
Sarah grabbed his arm.
“No.””
He looked at her.
“He knows where you live.””
“I know.””
“Then we can’t just sit here.””
Sarah shook her head.
“You don’t understand.””
Her voice was barely a whisper.
“Thomas doesn’t come unless he’s certain.””
The sentence made my stomach drop.
“Certain of what?””
Sarah looked at me.
“That he has permission.””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel looked terrified.
“Richard?””
Sarah nodded.
“No.””
She looked toward the window.
“Someone else.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Someone else?””
Before she could answer, the door shook.
Not violently.
Just enough.
A reminder.
Thomas knew we were inside.
“Sarah.””
His voice was calm.
Almost polite.
“You know how this ends.””
Gabriel stepped forward.
“Thomas!””
The older man outside went quiet.
Then laughed softly.
“Gabriel Bennett.””
His voice changed.
“You sound exactly like your father.””
Gabriel opened the door.
But Sarah stopped him.
“Don’t.””
He looked at her.
“I’m done hiding.””
She stared at him.
“And I’m done losing people.””
That sentence silenced him.
Then she looked at me.
“Emily, there is something I never told you.””
I felt my heart sink.
“What now?””
She took my hands.
“When I left Chicago, I wasn’t alone.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“I had help.””
“Who?””
Sarah looked toward Daniel.
My uncle looked away.
“Daniel helped me escape.””
The room went silent.
I stared at Daniel.
“But you said—”
“I made mistakes.””
His voice cracked.
“But I loved my sister.””
Sarah nodded.
“He saved my life.””
The relief lasted only a second.
Because then she added:
“But he also made a deal with Richard.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“What deal?””
Sarah answered.
“He agreed to disappear from my life.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Why?””
“Because Richard threatened Emily.””
My breath stopped.
Daniel looked at me.
“He said if I didn’t stay away, he would find you.””
I felt tears in my eyes.
“So you became the villain.””
Daniel nodded.
“Because I thought it would keep you alive.””
I didn’t know what to feel anymore.
Everyone had secrets.
Everyone had reasons.
Everyone had caused pain while trying to prevent worse pain.
Then the door opened.
Not forced.
Opened.
Thomas Reed stepped inside.
Older.
Calmer.
More dangerous because of it.
He looked around the room.
Then his eyes landed on Sarah.
“You look tired.””
Gabriel moved between them.
“Get out.””
Thomas smiled.
“Still protecting people you barely know.””
Gabriel’s face hardened.
“I know enough.””
Thomas looked at me.
“And you must be Emily.””
I felt sick.
“You know who I am.””
“I’ve known since the day you were born.””
The room went silent.
My voice shook.
“Why?””
Thomas sighed.
“Because your mother made everything complicated.””
Gabriel stepped forward.
“You destroyed our lives.””
Thomas looked at him.
“No.””
A pause.
“Your father did.””
Nobody spoke.
Thomas continued.
“Richard Bennett built an empire. He made enemies. He hurt people.””
He looked at Sarah.
“But your mother was the only person brave enough to challenge him.””
Sarah stared at him.
“Then why did you help him?””
Thomas’s expression changed.
“Because I thought I was protecting his family.””
Gabriel laughed bitterly.
“By destroying mine?””
Thomas looked down.
For the first time, he seemed ashamed.
“I made one mistake.””
I stepped forward.
“One?””
He looked at me.
“I lost control of the situation.””
“What situation?””
Thomas hesitated.
Then said:
“The night your mother disappeared.””
Sarah went still.
“You weren’t supposed to survive.””
The words hit like a weapon.
Gabriel moved instantly.
“What did you say?””
Thomas looked terrified.
Not of us.
Of the memory.
“Richard wanted Sarah gone.””
My hands shook.
“And you helped him.””
“Yes.””
Sarah whispered:
“Why?””
Thomas looked at her.
“Because I thought you had the evidence.””
“The flash drive.””
He nodded.
“The one you still have.””
Everyone froze.
Thomas looked directly at me.
“But what Richard never knew…”
He stepped closer.
“Was that your mother didn’t hide the evidence.””
A pause.
“She hid the person who could expose him.””
My heartbeat stopped.
“Who?””
Thomas looked at Gabriel.
Then at Sarah.
Then finally at me.
“Emily…”
His voice dropped.
“Your mother wasn’t protecting a secret.””
May you like
He pointed toward the door.
“She was protecting a witness.””
