Chapter 13: The Witness Nobody Could Find

The room went silent after Thomas spoke.

Not the kind of silence that came from confusion.

The kind that came from fear.

Everyone was looking at everyone else.

Trying to understand a truth that had been hidden for twenty-three years.

I looked at my mother.

“Who is the witness?””

Sarah’s face had gone pale.

She looked at Thomas.

Then at Daniel.

Then finally at me.

“I was.””

I blinked.

“What?””

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“Sarah saw everything.””

My mother stepped back.

“No.””

I looked between them.

“You just said she was protecting a witness.””

Thomas nodded.

“She was protecting herself.””

My confusion turned into anger.

“Then why make it sound like it was someone else?””

“Because Richard believed Sarah was dead.””

The words hit me.

“He believed that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Thomas looked exhausted.

“Because that was the lie I helped create.””

Gabriel stepped closer.

“You told my father she died?””

Thomas nodded.

“I told him what he wanted to hear.””

Sarah stared at him.

“You don’t get to act guilty now.””

Thomas accepted the anger.

“I know.””

“You helped destroy my life.””

“Yes.””

“You took my daughter away from me.””

“Yes.””

His honesty was almost worse.

There was no excuse.

No defense.

Just regret.

I looked at him.

“Why are you here?””

Thomas reached into his coat.

Gabriel immediately moved.

But Thomas pulled out a small envelope.

“I came because someone else knows.””

Sarah froze.

“Who?””

Thomas looked at her.

“The person who hired me.””

A chill moved through the room.

“Richard is dead,” Gabriel said.

Thomas nodded.

“I know.””

“Then who?””

Thomas looked at me.

“The person who inherited everything.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who inherited everything?””

Nobody answered.

Then Gabriel’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He listened.

Then his face became empty.

“What happened?””

He ended the call.

I stepped closer.

“Gabriel?””

He looked at me.

“The Bennett Foundation.””

“What about it?””

“They found irregularities in old financial records.””

Thomas whispered:

“No.””

Gabriel looked at him.

“What?””

Thomas’s face lost color.

“The foundation wasn’t Richard’s only operation.””

“Then whose was it?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Vivian’s.””

The name shocked everyone.

My mother closed her eyes.

“No.””

Gabriel shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

Thomas looked at him.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Understand what?””

“Your father wasn’t the only one making decisions.””

The room felt smaller.

“Vivian knew?””

Thomas nodded.

“Not everything.””

“Enough?””

“Yes.””

I thought about the woman who slapped me.

The woman who lied.

The woman who claimed she was afraid of losing everything.

She wasn’t just protecting a marriage.

She was protecting a legacy.

A knock came at the door.

Everyone froze.

Sarah whispered:

“No one knew we were here.””

Daniel looked toward the entrance.

“Someone does now.””

The door opened.

And Vivian walked inside.

Nobody spoke.

She looked at Sarah first.

Then Gabriel.

Then me.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I’m sorry.””

Gabriel laughed once.

A cold, painful sound.

“Sorry?””

Vivian looked down.

“I know how this looks.””

“It looks like you knew.””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I stepped forward.

“How long?””

Vivian looked at me.

“How long did you know about me?””

Her voice broke.

“Since before you were born.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“I knew Sarah was pregnant.””

Gabriel stared at her.

“No.””

Vivian cried quietly.

“I knew.””

“Then why?””

She looked at him.

“Because I loved you.””

“That isn’t love.””

The words came from Gabriel.

Softly.

But they destroyed her.

Vivian wiped her face.

“I know.””

She reached into her bag.

“I brought this.””

She handed me a small device.

A flash drive.

Sarah stepped forward.

“Where did you get that?””

Vivian looked at her.

“Richard gave it to me.””

Everyone froze.

“Why?””

“Because he trusted me.””

Gabriel looked sick.

“You helped him.””

Vivian shook her head.

“I thought I did.””

She looked at me.

“But then I found out what he actually did.””

I held the drive.

“What’s on it?””

Vivian whispered:

“Proof.””

“Of what?””

She looked at Thomas.

“Everything.””

Thomas suddenly moved.

Too quickly.

Toward the flash drive.

Gabriel blocked him.

And Thomas stopped.

Because everyone saw it.

The fear on his face.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Sarah whispered:

“Thomas.””

He looked at her.

“What?””

She stared.

“You didn’t come here to confess.””

The room went silent.

“You came here to get the evidence.””

May you like

Thomas said nothing.

And that was the answer.
