Chapter 11: The Secret Richard Bennett Buried
We stayed in Sarah’s house for three hours.
Nobody wanted to leave.
Not because it was comfortable.
Because leaving meant accepting that the truth was even bigger than we imagined.
Sarah made tea.
A mother’s instinct, even after twenty-three years.
She placed a cup in front of me exactly the way she used to when I was young.
Two sugars.
A little milk.
I stared at it.
“You remember?””
She smiled sadly.
“I remember everything about you.””
The words hurt.
Because I wanted to believe them.
But there was still a missing lifetime between us.
“Tell me everything.””
Sarah looked down.
“Where do I start?””
“The night I was born.””
She took a deep breath.
“I thought Gabriel had chosen Vivian.””
Gabriel looked at her.
“I never did.””
“I know that now.””
She looked at him.
“But back then, I believed the evidence.””
“What evidence?””
Sarah walked to a drawer and removed a small box.
Inside was a photograph.
Another one.
But this time, it wasn’t old.
It was the photograph Richard created.
Gabriel and Vivian.
Standing close together.
“I received this the night after you were born.””
Gabriel stared.
“This was fake.””
“Yes.””
“I never saw this.””
“I know.””
Sarah touched the picture.
“Richard made sure I saw it.””
She looked at me.
“He told me Gabriel was embarrassed of me. That he was going to marry Vivian.””
My chest tightened.
“He wanted you gone.””
Sarah nodded.
“He wanted Gabriel to become the person he planned for him to be.””
“A businessman?””
“A controlled son.””
The words were painful.
Gabriel looked away.
“My father never loved me.””
Sarah’s expression softened.
“He loved what he could turn you into.””
Nobody spoke.
Then I asked:
“How did you survive?””
Sarah looked at her hands.
“I ran.””
“From Richard?””
“Yes.””
“But you left me.””
Her eyes filled instantly.
“I know.””
I saw the pain before she spoke.
“That is the thing I regret most.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought if I stayed near you, they would find you.””
“Who?””
Sarah looked at Daniel.
“Your uncle.””
Daniel flinched.
Sarah continued.
“Richard had people everywhere.””
She looked at me.
“Doctors. Lawyers. Police.””
My stomach tightened.
“He controlled everything?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t you expose him?””
Sarah laughed sadly.
“Because nobody believed a woman who had disappeared.””
She reached into the box.
She pulled out a small flash drive.
My heart started racing.
“What is that?””
“Proof.””
Gabriel immediately leaned forward.
“Of what?””
“Everything.””
Sarah looked at him.
“Richard’s illegal deals. The hospital records. The people he paid.””
Daniel stared.
“You still had it?””
“I hid it.””
“Where?””
Sarah smiled faintly.
“In the one place Richard never thought to look.””
I looked at the flash drive.
“Where?””
She looked at me.
“With my daughter.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Sarah touched my hand.
“Emily, when you were little, I hid copies of everything.””
My heart stopped.
“Where?””
She smiled sadly.
“In the walls of our old apartment.””
I remembered it.
The tiny apartment where I grew up.
The place my mother always said we had to leave behind.
“Why?””
“Because I knew one day you would need the truth.””
A noise interrupted us.
A car door closing outside.
Everyone froze.
Gabriel walked toward the window.
Then stopped.
His face changed.
“What?””
I stood.
“What is it?””
He didn’t answer.
He just stared outside.
Sarah’s face lost all color.
“Who is it?””
Gabriel whispered:
“Thomas Reed.””
My blood went cold.
Outside the window, an older man stood beside a black car.
Watching the house.
Sarah grabbed my hand.
“Emily.””
Her voice trembled.
“We have to leave.””
The lights in the house suddenly went out.
And from outside, Thomas Reed called:
“Sarah.””
Everyone froze.
May you like
Then he said:
“You’ve hidden long enough.””
