Chapter 4: The Daughter Who Remembered My Voice

The word came from a child’s mouth.

One word.

One impossible word.

"Mommy?""

Everything inside me stopped.

The ballroom disappeared. The guests disappeared. The flashing cameras outside the glass doors disappeared.

There was only the little girl standing there with a stuffed rabbit pressed against her chest.

My daughter.

Lily.

She was smaller than I imagined.

Five years of wondering had created a thousand different images in my mind. I imagined her running through a garden. I imagined her laughing. I imagined the color of her eyes, the sound of her voice.

But I never imagined seeing her for the first time in a wedding ballroom surrounded by strangers.

I never imagined my sister standing behind me, terrified that her lie was finally collapsing.

The police officer gently guided Lily forward.

"She recognized you immediately," he said quietly.

I couldn't move.

My hands trembled.

"Lily?""

The little girl stared at me.

Her eyes were exactly like Nathan's.

But there was something else there.

Something familiar.

She tilted her head.

"I know you.""

A sob escaped from somewhere deep inside me.

Juliette stepped forward.

"No.""

Her voice was sharp.

Everyone looked at her.

"No, she doesn't know you.""

The officer frowned.

"Mrs. Mercer, please step back.""

Juliette's face twisted.

"She is my daughter.""

The room erupted.

Nathan looked at her in disbelief.

"Your daughter?""

Juliette grabbed onto the only explanation she had left.

"I raised her.""

Nathan's voice broke.

"You kidnapped her.""

"No!""

Juliette pointed at him.

"You weren't there. Caroline wasn't there. Someone had to take care of her.""

I looked at Lily.

She was watching all of us with frightened eyes.

I forced myself to kneel.

Slowly.

Carefully.

I didn't want to scare her.

"Hi, Lily.""

She held her rabbit tighter.

"How do you know my name?""

I swallowed the pain in my throat.

"Because I have always known your name.""

Her small eyebrows pulled together.

"But Aunt Juliette said my mommy died.""

The entire room went quiet.

Aunt.

Not mother.

Aunt.

A tiny word.

But it told me everything.

Juliette had never completely erased me.

Somewhere inside Lily's memories, I still existed.

I reached into my coat pocket.

I had carried it for years.

A small silver bracelet.

The only thing recovered from the fire that belonged to my baby.

"I had this for you.""

Lily looked at it.

Her eyes widened.

"Where did you get that?""

My heart raced.

"You remember it?""

She nodded slowly.

"When I was little, Aunt Juliette told me it was a toy from my old house.""

I looked at Juliette.

"You kept this?""

Juliette looked away.

For the first time, she had no excuse.

Lily stepped closer.

"Mommy?""

That word almost destroyed me.

I held my breath.

"Yes?""

"Why didn't you come get me?""

The question hurt more than any accusation.

Because she deserved an answer.

And I couldn't give her one.

"I tried.""

My voice cracked.

"I tried every day.""

Lily looked confused.

"Then why didn't you find me?""

I looked at Juliette.

Because of her.

Because of lies.

Because everyone I trusted had failed me.

But I wouldn't put that weight on a child.

So I said the only thing I could.

"Because grown-ups made mistakes.""

Lily looked down.

"Was I a mistake?""

"No.""

I answered instantly.

"No, sweetheart. Never.""

Nathan covered his mouth.

My father turned away.

Juliette whispered:

"This is ridiculous.""

I looked at her.

"You still don't understand, do you?""

She stared back.

"I gave her a home.""

"You stole mine.""

Her face hardened.

"I loved her.""

I stood slowly.

"You loved having what belonged to me.""

The police officer stepped between us.

"Mrs. Mercer, you're going to need to come with us.""

Juliette laughed bitterly.

"You're arresting me at my own wedding?""

Detective Vance picked up the documents.

"Fraud, falsifying records, unlawful guardianship, and possible involvement in the fire investigation.""

The smile disappeared.

Nathan looked at Juliette.

"Possible?""

Detective Vance didn't answer immediately.

He opened his briefcase.

"We found something else.""

Everyone watched as he removed an old photograph.

A photograph burned around the edges.

My breath caught.

It was taken the night of the fire.

I recognized the house.

I recognized the driveway.

And I recognized the person standing outside.

Juliette.

Holding a gas can.

My father stepped closer.

"No...""

Juliette's face went blank.

The officer reached for her.

She suddenly screamed.

"You don't know what happened!""

I stared at her.

"Then tell us.""

She looked at me.

For one second, I saw the sister I grew up with.

The girl who used to braid my hair.

The girl who cried when our mother died.

Then it vanished.

"I didn't mean for you to survive.""

The ballroom froze.

Nathan whispered:

"What?""

Juliette covered her mouth.

But the truth had already escaped.

The officer grabbed her arms.

And as they led her away, she turned back to me.

"You think this is over?""

I held Lily's hand.

"It is.""

Juliette smiled.

A cold, empty smile.

"No, Caroline.""

She looked at Nathan.

May you like

Then at my daughter.

"You still don't know what really happened the night you died.""
