Chapter 14: The Last Lie My Family Told
My father looked at me.
And for the first time in my life, I saw fear in his eyes.
Not fear for himself.
Fear of what I was about to discover.
"Caroline...""
I shook my head.
"No.""
I stepped back.
"I can't do this again.""
My voice cracked.
"Another secret. Another person lying.""
My mother moved closer.
"Your father needs to explain.""
He closed his eyes.
"I do.""
The police waited.
Even Richard watched.
Because everyone wanted to hear the final truth.
My father looked at the burned house.
"I knew Richard was dangerous.""
I stared.
"How long?""
"Years.""
My stomach turned.
"Years?""
He nodded.
"After your mother disappeared, I started investigating.""
"Disappeared?""
My mother's expression changed.
She corrected him softly.
"After he thought I was dead.""
My father looked ashamed.
"I found evidence that Richard had been manipulating the company.""
Detective Vance crossed his arms.
"Why didn't you go to the authorities?""
My father looked at me.
"Because Richard threatened my children.""
My eyes narrowed.
"Juliette?""
He nodded.
"And you.""
I almost couldn't breathe.
"So you stayed silent.""
"I thought I could control it.""
His voice broke.
"I thought I could protect everyone.""
I looked at the ruins.
"You couldn't.""
"No.""
He looked at me.
"I couldn't.""
The honesty hurt.
But this time, it was different.
Because he wasn't hiding.
He was finally admitting his failure.
Richard laughed quietly.
"Douglas always believed he was the hero.""
My father turned toward him.
"You destroyed this family.""
Richard smiled.
"No.""
He looked at me.
"Your family destroyed itself.""
The words were cruel.
But there was truth buried inside them.
My father hid things.
My mother disappeared.
Nathan stayed silent.
Juliette chose jealousy.
And I was the one who paid.
Detective Vance approached Richard.
"It's over.""
Richard looked at him.
"Not yet.""
Everyone froze.
He reached into his coat.
The officers immediately raised their weapons.
But Richard only pulled out a small envelope.
He handed it to me.
"What is that?""
"Something your mother never found.""
My mother looked alarmed.
"Caroline, don't.""
I opened it anyway.
Inside was a letter.
From Juliette.
My hands shook.
I read the first line.
Caroline, if you're reading this, I'm probably already gone.
I looked at Richard.
"What did you do?""
He didn't answer.
I kept reading.
I know you hate me. You should.
My heart tightened.
But there is something you need to know. I didn't want to hurt you.
A bitter laugh escaped me.
The woman who burned my house didn't want to hurt me?
Impossible.
But I continued.
Richard told me the fire would only scare you. He promised nobody would get hurt.
My hands trembled.
I believed him.
A tear fell onto the paper.
When I realized what he had done, it was too late.
The letter continued.
I found Lily after the fire. I could have returned her to you.
I stopped breathing.
But I was afraid.
The final lines blurred.
I thought if I couldn't have your life, I could at least keep one piece of it.
I lowered the letter.
For the first time, I felt something other than anger toward Juliette.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
But understanding.
She was still responsible.
She still made choices.
But Richard had built the trap.
Richard had pushed every person until they broke.
Detective Vance took the letter.
"We need to preserve this.""
Richard suddenly laughed.
Everyone looked at him.
"You still don't understand.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
He looked at Lily.
"The fire wasn't the biggest secret.""
Nobody moved.
"What are you talking about?""
Richard smiled.
"Ask your daughter.""
I felt cold.
"Lily?""
The little girl looked confused.
"What?""
Richard stared at her.
"Tell your mother what you remember.""
My daughter looked down.
Then she whispered:
"I remember the man from the house.""
My heart stopped.
"What man?""
Lily looked at Richard.
"The man who told me to hide.""
The world disappeared.
May you like
Because Lily had remembered.
And she had just identified the person who was there that night.
