The Sister Who Buried Me Alive / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10: The Man Who Never Left

The shadow outside the door disappeared.

For one second, I wondered if I had imagined it.

Then my mother grabbed my arm.

"Caroline, you need to listen to me.""

Her voice was different from the woman I remembered.

My mother used to be fearless.

She was the woman who argued with lawyers, challenged executives, and stood in front of anyone who threatened her family.

But the woman sitting in front of me was afraid.

Terrified.

"Who is he?""

My mother looked toward the door.

"Not here.""

"Mom.""

"No.""

Her fingers tightened around mine.

"If he knows you're here, you and Lily are not safe.""

The mention of Lily changed everything.

I immediately stepped back.

"My daughter is outside.""

My mother froze.

"Your daughter?""

I nodded.

"She survived.""

Tears filled my mother's eyes.

"Juliette?""

I didn't answer.

I didn't need to.

My mother's expression collapsed.

"She took everything.""

The door handle moved.

Someone was trying to open it.

My mother grabbed my hand.

"Hide.""

"What?""

"Caroline, please.""

I had spent five years running.

Five years hiding.

Not anymore.

But before I could respond, the door opened.

Detective Vance appeared.

"Caroline.""

I exhaled.

For a moment, relief washed over me.

Then my mother whispered:

"He's not alone.""

Detective Vance looked behind him.

"What happened?""

I stared at him.

"Someone was outside.""

His expression immediately changed.

He reached for his phone.

"Where's Nathan?""

"With Lily.""

"Good.""

He locked the door.

My mother looked at Detective Vance.

"You found her.""

He nodded.

"After all these years.""

She looked away.

"I never thought anyone would.""

I stepped between them.

"Someone needs to explain everything.""

Nobody argued.

Finally.

No more secrets.

My mother took a deep breath.

"After I discovered the financial crimes inside Mercer Holdings, I realized someone was watching me.""

"Who?""

She looked at Detective Vance.

"Someone I trusted.""

The detective nodded.

"We believe the person had access to company records, family information, and security systems.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who?""

My mother looked at me.

"Your uncle.""

I froze.

"My uncle?""

She nodded.

"Your father's younger brother.""

I searched my memory.

Uncle Richard.

The man who always brought expensive gifts.

The man who told me I was like his own daughter.

The man who attended my mother's funeral.

"He died.""

My mother looked down.

"No.""

The room went silent.

"What?""

"Richard Mercer disappeared.""

Detective Vance spoke quietly.

"Official records show he moved overseas six years ago.""

My mother shook her head.

"He didn't leave.""

I felt sick.

"Then where is he?""

Before anyone answered, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

Detective Vance looked at me.

"Don't answer.""

But I already knew.

I pressed the button.

A familiar voice filled the room.

The same voice from before.

"You found her.""

My blood ran cold.

My mother stepped away.

"Richard.""

The man laughed softly.

"So she finally told you.""

I held the phone tighter.

"Why did you do this?""

Silence.

Then:

"Because your mother was going to destroy everything.""

"You tried to kill me.""

"No.""

His answer came instantly.

"I tried to scare you.""

My mother looked horrified.

"You're lying.""

Richard continued.

"Juliette was supposed to take the documents. She was supposed to make Caroline leave.""

My heart stopped.

"She started the fire.""

"Yes.""

A pause.

"But she wasn't supposed to lock the door.""

I felt sick.

The truth was worse than I imagined.

Juliette hadn't planned everything.

She had panicked.

She had made a choice.

And that choice almost killed me.

"Why Lily?""

Richard laughed.

"Because Lily was leverage.""

My hands shook.

"You used a child.""

"No.""

His voice became colder.

"I used the truth.""

The call ended.

Detective Vance immediately traced the signal.

My mother grabbed my shoulders.

"Caroline.""

I looked at her.

"Why didn't you come back?""

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Because Richard made sure I couldn't.""

"What does that mean?""

She looked toward the door.

"Because he wasn't just hiding.""

A pause.

"He was controlling the hospital where I was taken.""

My heart stopped.

The same hospital.

The same place where I woke up alone.

The same place where everyone told me my family never came.

May you like

My mother whispered:

"Caroline, he was there the night you survived.""
