Chapter 12: The Family Secret That Started It All

The photograph sat on the table between us.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody wanted to.

Because sometimes a piece of paper can feel more dangerous than a weapon.

"The fourth Mercer.""

Nathan looked confused.

"I thought there were only three brothers.""

My mother stared at the picture.

"I thought so too.""

Detective Vance examined it carefully.

"When was this taken?""

My father, who had arrived moments earlier, looked at it.

Then he stopped breathing.

I noticed immediately.

"Dad?""

He didn't answer.

"Dad.""

His eyes remained fixed on the stranger in the photograph.

"Who is he?""

My father sat down slowly.

"Your uncle.""

I felt a chill.

"Richard?""

He shook his head.

"No.""

The room went silent.

"Then who?""

My father looked at my mother.

She nodded sadly.

"His name was Daniel.""

I frowned.

"Why have I never heard of him?""

Because they had hidden him.

The answer was obvious.

My father covered his face.

"Your grandfather had four sons.""

Detective Vance leaned forward.

"But records show only three.""

My father nodded.

"Because Daniel was erased.""

I stared at the photograph.

"Why?""

My father looked at me.

"Because he wasn't supposed to inherit anything.""

The words sounded impossible.

"That doesn't explain erasing someone.""

My mother spoke quietly.

"Daniel discovered something about the Mercer family fortune.""

"What?""

She looked at the picture.

"The company wasn't built the way everyone believed.""

I waited.

"Your grandfather stole the original assets from another family.""

My stomach tightened.

"What family?""

She didn't answer.

She didn't have to.

The silence told me this went deeper than money.

Richard.

The fire.

The lies.

My entire family history.

All connected.

A phone buzzed.

Detective Vance checked it.

His expression changed.

"What?""

He stood.

"We found Richard.""

Everyone turned.

"Where?""

He looked at me.

"At the old Mercer estate.""

My blood ran cold.

"The burned house?""

He nodded.

"He's there now.""

My father stood.

"No.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

He looked terrified.

"That's where Daniel disappeared.""

Nobody spoke.

"What happened to him?""

My father hesitated.

Then:

"Richard killed him.""

The room went silent.

My mother covered her mouth.

"I never knew.""

My father shook his head.

"I found out years later.""

"Then why didn't you tell anyone?""

His eyes filled with shame.

"Because Richard threatened Caroline.""

I froze.

"What?""

"He said if I exposed him, he'd destroy you.""

I laughed bitterly.

"He did anyway.""

My father looked broken.

"I know.""

Detective Vance grabbed his coat.

"We need to move.""

The old estate looked different at night.

More dangerous.

The police surrounded the property.

The burned house stood like a skeleton.

I held Lily's hand as we waited behind the officers.

Then Detective Vance's radio crackled.

"Movement inside.""

Everyone prepared.

The front door opened.

Richard stepped out.

Older than I remembered.

But unmistakable.

He looked directly at me.

And smiled.

"Caroline.""

My blood ran cold.

"You remember me.""

He tilted his head.

"Of course.""

The officers moved forward.

"Richard Mercer, you're under arrest.""

He didn't resist.

Instead, he looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

"She doesn't know, does she?""

I froze.

"Know what?""

Richard smiled.

"The truth about her father.""

Nathan stepped forward.

"Enough.""

Richard laughed.

"You still think you're the hero.""

Detective Vance grabbed his arm.

But Richard kept talking.

"Caroline.""

I stared at him.

"What?""

His smile disappeared.

"The man you loved wasn't the victim.""

Nathan went pale.

Richard whispered:

"He was the reason your house burned.""

May you like

And behind me, my father said the words I never expected to hear.

"He's telling the truth.""
