Chapter 6: The Woman Who Gave Birth to My Father

I read the birth certificate three times.

Every time, the words remained the same.

*Mother: Eleanor Reed.*

Danielle's mother.

*Father: Richard Lawson.*

My biological father.

I looked at my father.

“Explain this.””

He stared through the windshield as Hayes drove.

“Eleanor was Richard's first wife.””

I shook my head.

“No. Danielle's mother was Eleanor. She married Daniel Reed. She raised Danielle in Savannah.””

“She married Daniel after Richard disappeared from her life.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“Because Richard was already married to another woman. He abandoned Eleanor when he learned she was pregnant.””

I looked at the certificate again.

“So I'm Danielle's half-brother?””

My father nodded.

The silence inside the vehicle became unbearable.

I thought about my wedding.

About kissing Danielle beneath the white flowers.

About holding her hand in the hospital while she gave birth to Ava.

My entire marriage suddenly seemed to have been built on a secret nobody had trusted me enough to reveal.

“Did Danielle know?””

“Yes,” my father said.

I turned toward him.

“How long?””

“She discovered the truth shortly before she disappeared.””

My voice cracked.

“And you let us get married?””

“I begged her to tell you.””

“But she didn't.””

“She believed Richard would destroy both of you if the truth came out.””

I pressed my hands against my forehead.

“Why would he care?””

“Because he had spent thirty years trying to control his family. You were the child he abandoned, and Danielle was the daughter Eleanor raised. When he discovered you were together, he saw an opportunity.””

I stared at him.

“What opportunity?””

“To control the Reed family trust. The original inheritance had a clause protecting your descendants. Richard wanted access to the money, and Ava was the next legal beneficiary.””

I thought of the documents Richard had pressured me to sign.

The property transfers.

The mysterious development agreements.

The constant requests to update the trust.

Everything had been connected.

My phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

I answered immediately.

“Where's my daughter?””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“Hello, Marcus.””

“Put Ava on the phone.””

“She's fine.””

“Let me hear her.””

A few seconds later, Ava's tiny voice came through.

“Daddy?””

“Sweetheart, I'm coming.””

“I'm scared.””

“I know. But you're brave, okay? Stay close to me.””

Vanessa took the phone back.

“You have twenty minutes.””

“For what?””

“The original birth certificate. Bring it to the farmhouse.””

“I have it.””

“Good.””

“And if you touch Ava—”

“You still don't understand, Marcus. I'm not the one you should be afraid of.””

I looked at my father.

“Richard?””

Vanessa went quiet.

Then she whispered:

“Richard is already here.””

The call ended.

Hayes turned onto Mercer Road.

The farmhouse appeared beyond a line of pine trees.

It was an old white building with a rusted roof and broken shutters. Two black SUVs were parked outside.

Hayes slowed.

“Everyone stay down.””

My father leaned forward.

“There's a side entrance through the barn.””

“How do you know?””

“I helped Richard renovate this place.””

I looked at him.

“You helped him?””

He nodded miserably.

“I didn't know what he was doing at first. By the time I understood, he had too much power over me.””

Hayes turned off the engine.

“We wait for backup.””

I shook my head.

“Every second we wait gives them more time with Ava.””

Hayes looked at me.

“Then we're going through the barn.””

We moved behind the vehicles.

The grass was wet, and the air smelled of rain and pine.

My father led us to a wooden door.

He opened it slowly.

Inside, the barn was filled with old furniture and rusted farm equipment.

A narrow staircase descended behind a stack of wooden crates.

“There's a basement,” he whispered.

I heard a child's voice.

“Daddy?””

I ran.

At the bottom of the stairs was a small room.

Ava was sitting on a chair.

Her hands were free, but Vanessa stood behind her, holding a phone.

“Daddy!””

I rushed toward her.

Vanessa raised her hand.

“Stop.””

I froze.

“Let her go.””

Vanessa looked exhausted.

Her makeup was smeared, and her hair hung loosely around her face.

“I never wanted to hurt her.””

“Then move away from my daughter.””

“You don't understand what Richard promised me.””

“I don't care.””

“He promised me a new life. A new identity. He said if I helped him secure the trust, I could take Lily and disappear.””

“Where is Lily?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Where is she?””

“She was supposed to be with Danielle.””

“She's safe.””

Vanessa began crying.

“You think you're the only person Richard destroyed?””

Before I could answer, a door opened behind her.

Richard stepped into the basement.

He was holding a small leather case.

“That's enough, Evelyn.””

Vanessa flinched.

Richard placed the case on a table.

“Marcus, you brought the certificate?””

I pulled the envelope from my jacket.

“Yes.””

“Put it down.””

I placed it on the table.

Richard opened it and smiled.

“Thirty years of lies. All contained in one little piece of paper.””

He looked at me.

“You know, I always wondered what kind of man my son would become.””

I stepped closer.

“You don't get to call yourself my father.””

Richard shrugged.

“Biology is difficult to argue with.””

“You abandoned me.””

“I made a business decision.””

Ava began crying.

“Daddy, I want to go home.””

I reached for her.

Richard pulled a small remote from his pocket.

A red light blinked on its surface.

“Not so fast.””

Hayes appeared at the bottom of the stairs, weapon raised.

“Drop it, Richard!””

Richard smiled.

“You're too late, Robert.””

He pressed a button.

A loud mechanical noise came from beneath the floor.

Then the entire room began shaking.

My father grabbed the table.

“What have you done?””

Richard looked at him.

“I'm correcting the mistake you made thirty years ago.””

A section of the floor opened.

Behind it was a narrow elevator shaft.

Richard pushed a button.

The elevator began rising from somewhere deep beneath the farmhouse.

Then a familiar voice came through the speaker.

“Richard, is the girl with you?””

I froze.

It was Danielle.

Richard smiled.

“Your wife is waiting upstairs, Marcus.””

I stared at him.

“She's at the house.””

“No,” he said quietly.

Then the elevator doors opened.

And standing inside was Danielle.

But she wasn't alone.

A woman stood beside her, holding a photograph of my newborn daughter.

The woman looked directly at me.

Then she said:

“Marcus, I'm your real mother. And I need you to know that Danielle isn't the person who gave birth to Ava.””

My father whispered one word.

“No.””

May you like

Richard laughed.

“Now we're finally getting to the interesting part.””
