Chapter 12: The Last Witness

The address was written on the back of Eleanor's letter.

An abandoned maternity hospital outside Savannah.

The building had been closed for nearly twenty years, but Richard had continued using its underground rooms.

It was where my biological mother had died.

It was also where the first baby transfer had taken place.

Hayes handed me a small key.

“There's a service entrance at the rear.””

I looked at him.

“Why are you helping me?””

He didn't look away.

“Because I spent four years pretending I didn't know what happened to Danielle. I told myself I was protecting my family. But every night, I remembered the day I signed that false report.””

“You took money to bury my wife.””

“Yes.””

“And now you want to be a hero?””

“No,” he said quietly.

“I want to make sure your daughters don't grow up believing the same lies I helped create.””

I glanced at Amelia and Ava.

Both girls were sitting with Mrs. Patterson.

I had arranged for additional officers to protect them.

Before leaving, I crouched beside Ava.

“Daddy has to find Mommy.””

She hugged me.

“Bring her home.””

“I will.””

Amelia reached for my hand.

“Can I come?””

I shook my head gently.

“Not this time, sweetheart.””

She looked disappointed.

Then she whispered:

“Tell Mommy I'm sorry I couldn't help her before.””

I kissed her forehead.

“You don't have anything to be sorry for.””

We drove to the abandoned hospital.

The building stood behind a rusted iron fence, surrounded by overgrown grass and dead trees.

The front entrance was chained.

Hayes led me around the side.

We entered through a service corridor.

The air smelled of dust and old medicine.

A flickering light revealed faded signs pointing toward the maternity ward.

I heard a woman's voice.

“Marcus?””

I stopped.

“Danielle?””

“I'm here!””

I ran toward the sound.

We reached a room with a metal door.

It was locked.

Hayes examined the keypad.

“Move back.””

He forced the panel open and cut the exposed wires.

The lock clicked.

Inside, Danielle was sitting on the floor with her hands tied.

A man stood behind her.

Thomas.

My father.

He held a small medical case.

I rushed forward.

“Dad!””

Thomas turned.

For a moment, he looked relieved.

Then he saw Hayes.

His expression changed.

“Robert, you shouldn't have brought him here.””

Hayes raised his weapon.

“Put the case down.””

Thomas shook his head.

“You don't understand.””

I approached Danielle.

“Are you hurt?””

She shook her head.

“Marcus, don't trust him.””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Danielle, please.””

I cut the rope around her wrists.

She grabbed my hand.

“Your father has been helping Richard.””

Thomas stepped back.

“I was trying to save you.””

“By kidnapping her?””

“I had no choice!””

I stood.

“You always have a choice.””

Thomas looked at me.

“Richard threatened to kill you when you were a child. I knew what he was capable of. I thought if I cooperated, I could keep you safe.””

“You let him steal my identity.””

“I raised you!””

“You let him take my wife!””

Thomas began crying.

“I know.””

“You let him use my daughter!””

“I know!””

He dropped the medical case.

It struck the floor.

A small metal object rolled out.

A USB drive.

Danielle stared at it.

“What's that?””

Thomas looked at me.

“Everything.””

Hayes picked it up.

Thomas continued.

“Richard kept recordings of every procedure, every payment, every altered document. He wanted something to use against everyone involved.””

“Why give it to us now?””

Thomas looked toward Danielle.

“Because he told me what he planned to do with Ava.””

I felt cold.

“What?””

Thomas lowered his voice.

“Richard discovered that the two girls have different medical records. One carries a genetic marker he needs for the inheritance procedure. He believes that if he can establish legal control over both children, he can reopen the trust under his own authority.””

I stared at him.

“There's no such thing as an inheritance procedure.””

“There is. Not legally. But Richard has a doctor who has been falsifying medical records for years.””

Hayes looked at the USB drive.

“This will expose everyone.””

Thomas nodded.

“That's why Richard wants it destroyed.””

A sound echoed from the corridor.

Footsteps.

Then a man's voice.

“Thank you, Thomas. I was wondering when you'd finally bring it to me.””

Richard appeared in the doorway.

He held a gun.

Behind him stood Dr. Bennett.

I moved in front of Danielle.

Richard smiled.

“Family reunions are always so touching.””

Hayes raised his weapon.

“Drop it!””

Richard pointed his gun toward Danielle.

“Not another step.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“Richard, let them go.””

Richard looked amused.

“After thirty years, you're still trying to play the father?””

Thomas's voice trembled.

“It's over.””

Richard laughed.

“You're right. It is.””

He turned toward Bennett.

“Take the drive.””

The doctor moved forward.

Hayes fired.

The bullet struck the wall beside Bennett's shoulder.

Everyone ducked.

Richard grabbed Danielle and pulled her against him.

I rushed forward.

He pressed the gun against her head.

“Stop!””

I froze.

Richard looked at Thomas.

“You have one last opportunity to prove your loyalty.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

Richard smiled.

“Then I'll take something else.””

He pulled a folded document from his jacket.

It was a custody agreement.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

I recognized it immediately.

The same forged signature from the document Danielle had described.

Richard held it up.

“According to this, I have legal authority over both children.””

I laughed.

“You forged it.””

“Perhaps.””

“Then it means nothing.””

Richard's smile widened.

“Not quite. The judge who approved it is standing right behind me.””

A second man stepped into the doorway.

He was wearing a dark suit and carrying a briefcase.

I recognized him from the photographs in my father's box.

Judge Martin Caldwell.

The man who had signed the original trust transfer.

He looked at me.

“Mr. Reed, I suggest you cooperate.””

Hayes lowered his weapon slightly.

“Judge, you're involved in this?””

Caldwell adjusted his glasses.

“I'm here to ensure the legal process is followed.””

Danielle began trembling.

Richard looked at me.

“Now, Marcus, here's what happens. You give me the original trust agreement and the USB drive. In return, your wife and daughters remain unharmed.””

I stared at him.

“You've already lost.””

Richard glanced toward the judge.

Then he leaned close to my ear.

“You still haven't figured out why I chose your family, have you?””

I shook my head.

He whispered:

“Because your father didn't just leave you an inheritance.””

He pointed toward Thomas.

“He left you a confession.””

Thomas looked terrified.

Richard continued.

“And the confession proves that the man who raised you murdered your biological mother.””

I turned toward Thomas.

His face collapsed.

Danielle whispered my name.

And for the first time, my father didn't deny it.

May you like

He simply said:

“Marcus, there's something I need to tell you about the night your mother died.””
