Chapter 5: The Photograph in My Father's Pocket
I didn't remember running.
One second, I was standing beside the swimming pool. The next, I was tearing through the kitchen, knocking over chairs and shouting my daughter's name.
“Ava!””
Mrs. Patterson was crying near the staircase.
“They came through the front door. Two men. One of them had a gun.””
“Where did they take her?””
“I don't know!””
I grabbed her shoulders.
“Did you see their faces?””
“One had a scar. The other wore a black baseball cap.””
Detective Hayes rushed inside.
“Marcus, step back. We're securing the property.””
“That's my daughter!””
“I know. But if you run outside without a plan, you could get her killed.””
I wanted to punch him.
Instead, I turned toward my father.
He was standing in the doorway, breathing heavily.
“Who were those men?””
He looked at Richard's photograph still lying on the terrace table.
“Richard's security team.””
“Then tell me where he would take Ava!””
My father hesitated.
I grabbed his jacket.
“You spent four years hiding while I raised my daughter alone. You don't get to hesitate now.””
His face crumpled.
“There's an old property outside Savannah. A farmhouse near the river. Richard uses it when he needs somewhere private.””
“Address?””
“Twenty-six Mercer Road.””
Hayes immediately spoke into his radio.
“Units to Mercer Road. Possible child abduction. Suspects armed.””
I ran toward the front door.
Danielle caught my hand.
“Marcus, wait.””
I turned.
Her face was wet with tears.
“Don't let him separate us again.””
I kissed her forehead.
“I won't.””
Then I looked at Lily.
“Stay with Danielle. Detective Hayes will protect you.””
Lily nodded.
But as I turned away, she caught my sleeve.
“Mr. Marcus?””
“What is it?””
She reached into the pocket of her pink sweater and pulled out a folded piece of paper.
“Mommy told me to give you this if the bad man took Ava.””
I unfolded it.
It was a photograph.
My father stood beside a younger woman outside a hospital.
The woman was holding a newborn baby.
On the back, in Danielle's handwriting, were five words:
The child they switched was yours.
My stomach dropped.
I looked at my father.
“What does this mean?””
He stared at the photograph.
Then he sat down.
“Your mother had complications when you were born,” he said quietly.
“The hospital told us one baby had died.””
I shook my head.
“I'm standing right here.””
“They told us your biological mother had died during childbirth. Your father—my friend—was devastated. He was a wealthy businessman who had lost his wife and newborn son.””
I felt dizzy.
“You're saying I was switched?””
My father nodded.
“Your biological father was Richard Lawson.””
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Richard.
The man who had attended my wedding.
The man who had held Ava as a baby.
The man who had spent four years pretending to mourn my wife.
My father's voice trembled.
“I raised you as my own. I loved you as my own. When I discovered what had happened, Richard threatened to expose everything and destroy our family.””
“So you hid it?””
“I thought I was protecting you.””
“You let me believe you were my father.””
“I was your father in every way that mattered.””
I looked down at the photograph.
The woman holding the newborn was unfamiliar.
“Who is she?””
My father swallowed.
“Your biological mother.””
“Is she alive?””
He looked away.
“I don't know.””
Danielle appeared at the doorway, supported by Mrs. Patterson.
“Marcus,” she whispered.
“There's more.””
I turned.
She held out a second photograph.
It showed Richard standing beside Vanessa, whose real name was Evelyn Hart.
Between them stood a little boy.
He looked about ten years old.
On the back was written:
The other heir.
I frowned.
“Who is this child?””
Danielle's eyes filled with tears.
“Evelyn told me he was Richard's son.””
I looked at my father.
He shook his head.
“Richard never had another child.””
Danielle took a shaky breath.
“He told me the boy was your son.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
She nodded.
“Four years ago, before I disappeared, I found documents showing that someone had registered a second child under your name.””
I stared at the photograph.
The boy had dark hair, pale skin, and a small scar beneath his right eyebrow.
A scar I recognized.
Ava had the same one.
“Why would Richard register a child as mine?””
Danielle looked at me.
“Because he wanted to replace Ava.””
The words struck harder than a physical blow.
Hayes approached.
“Marcus, we need to move. The units are ready.””
I folded the photograph and slipped it into my pocket.
“I'm going after my daughter.””
My father stood.
“I'm coming with you.””
I looked at him.
“You're going to tell me everything on the way.””
He nodded.
We climbed into Hayes's vehicle.
As we sped toward Mercer Road, I called Vanessa.
No answer.
I called again.
This time, someone picked up.
It wasn't Vanessa.
It was Ava.
“Daddy?””
I nearly stopped breathing.
“Sweetheart! Are you okay?””
She was crying.
“Daddy, Vanessa is here.””
I looked at Hayes.
He pressed the accelerator.
“Ava, listen to me. Don't go anywhere. Stay where you are.””
Then I heard Vanessa's voice.
“Give me the phone, sweetheart.””
Ava screamed.
And Vanessa said something directly into the receiver.
“Marcus, if you want your daughter alive, bring me the original birth certificate.””
The call ended.
I looked at my father.
“What original birth certificate?””
He reached into his jacket.
His hands were shaking.
Then he pulled out a small envelope.
“I've kept it hidden for thirty years.””
He opened it.
Inside was a birth certificate with my name.
But the father's name wasn't his.
It was Richard Lawson.
And beneath the mother's name was a second detail that made my entire world collapse.
