Chapter 8: The Witness Nobody Knew

I almost threw the note away.

Almost.

Every instinct told me it was a trap.

But another part of me knew something important.

The person who wrote that note knew my locker number.

They knew my schedule.

They knew enough to find me.

That meant they were either close to the situation.

Or close to the people causing it.

At 7:30 a.m., I walked behind the auditorium.

The school was quiet.

Too quiet.

I kept looking over my shoulder.

Then I heard footsteps.

I turned.

A woman stood there.

Not a student.

Not a teacher.

Someone I had never seen before.

She held a folder against her chest.

“Olivia?””

I stepped back.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Rachel Miller.””

The name meant nothing to me.

“What do you want?””

She looked toward the school building.

“I was a teacher here.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Were?””

She nodded.

“I quit three years ago.””

“Why?””

Her face tightened.

“Because of Mrs. Baxter.””

My stomach dropped.

Of course.

Another person.

Another secret.

“What happened?””

Rachel opened the folder.

Inside were printed emails.

Documents.

Photographs.

“I tried to report her before Marcus did.””

I stared.

“You?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t anyone know?””

“Because nobody listened.””

The anger in her voice was different from Marcus’s.

Less painful.

More exhausted.

“They told me I misunderstood what happened.””

“What happened?””

Rachel looked down.

“One of my students came to me crying.””

She swallowed.

“She said Mrs. Baxter grabbed her arm hard enough to leave marks.””

I felt sick.

“How long ago?””

“Four years.””

“And you reported it?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Rachel laughed quietly.

“The complaint disappeared.””

I looked at the folder.

“How did you get these?””

“I kept copies.””

My heart raced.

Everyone had been saving pieces of the truth.

Waiting.

Hoping someone would finally put them together.

“Why contact me?””

Rachel looked directly at me.

“Because your video is the first time anyone outside the school has seen what she does.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand. Why didn’t you go to the police?””

“I tried.””

“And?””

“And someone called me before I could.””

“Who?””

Rachel hesitated.

Then said:

“Principal Harrison.””

The name made my stomach twist.

“What did he say?””

She looked away.

“He told me I was ruining people’s careers.””

I clenched my fists.

“He threatened you.””

“Yes.””

“Why stay quiet?””

Rachel looked at the ground.

“Because I had a family. Because I was afraid. Because I thought one person couldn’t fight an entire system.””

I understood that feeling.

Everyone had thought the same thing.

Until now.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

I looked down.

It was from Dr. Carter.

*Where are you? We need to talk immediately.*

Rachel saw the message.

Her expression changed.

“Don’t tell her you’re here.””

I looked up.

“Why?””

“Because she already knows more than she admits.””

My heart sank.

“Are you saying Dr. Carter is involved?””

Rachel shook her head.

“I’m saying you need to ask better questions.””

“What questions?””

She pointed at the folder.

“Ask why the complaints disappeared.””

“I know. Someone hid them.””

“No.””

Rachel’s voice became quiet.

“Ask who had access to remove them.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Principal Harrison?””

Rachel didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

I looked back at the message from Dr. Carter.

For the first time, I wondered if I had been seeing only half the story.

When I returned to the main building, Malik was waiting.

“You were gone.””

“I had something to do.””

He studied my face.

“What happened?””

I hesitated.

Then I showed him the folder.

He looked through the papers.

His expression changed with every page.

“My brother knew about this.””

“What?””

Malik pointed at a signature.

A handwritten note on one of the documents.

“That’s his handwriting.””

I leaned closer.

At the bottom of the page were four words.

*Find the missing file.*

I looked at Malik.

“What missing file?””

Before he could answer, the school intercom turned on.

A voice echoed through the hallway.

“Olivia Reed, please report to the principal’s office immediately.””

Students stopped walking.

Everyone looked at me.

Malik grabbed my arm.

“Don’t go.””

“Why?””

His face was pale.

“Because nobody gets called to Principal Harrison’s office unless something bad is about to happen.””

The intercom clicked again.

Then Principal Harrison’s voice added:

“Olivia, bring your phone.””

May you like

My heart dropped.

He knew.
