Chapter 11: The Truth Behind the Protection

The fire alarm turned out to be a false alarm.

But nothing about that morning felt false anymore.

I stood outside the school office holding a copy of the report I had secretly photographed before Principal Harrison took it back.

My hands were still shaking.

Not from fear.

From disbelief.

The signature was burned into my mind.

Dr. Evelyn Carter.

Malik’s mother.

The person who had come to save him.

The person who had helped us uncover the truth.

The person Marcus warned me about.

I didn’t know what to think.

When Malik found me near the courtyard, he immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I looked at him.

“I saw the file.””

His face changed.

“What file?””

“Marcus’s original complaint.””

He went quiet.

“What did it say?””

I swallowed.

“It said someone made a deal to make him withdraw it.””

Malik looked confused.

“Who?””

I didn’t answer.

I didn’t want to say the name.

Because saying it would make it real.

But Malik saw my expression.

His eyes widened.

“No.””

I looked away.

“Malik…”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“You think my mom did that?””

“I don’t know.””

But he already looked hurt.

Not angry.

Hurt.

Because some part of him believed it.

“My mom would never protect Mrs. Baxter.””

“I didn’t say she did.””

“But you’re thinking it.””

I stayed silent.

That was enough.

Malik walked away.

I wanted to follow him.

But I understood.

Sometimes the truth hurt more when it came from someone who was trying to help.

That afternoon, I met Marcus again.

Not in person.

On the phone.

“You saw it, didn’t you?””

I didn’t answer.

“How did you know?””

“Because I knew eventually someone would find it.””

I sat on my bed.

“Marcus, why didn’t you tell me your mother was involved?””

A long silence.

Then:

“Because she wasn’t the person you think she was.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means she wasn’t trying to hurt me.””

I frowned.

“She signed the report.””

“Yes.””

“She made you withdraw your complaint.””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“No, Olivia. That’s not what happened.””

“Then explain.””

His voice softened.

“She made me withdraw because she thought she was saving me.””

I didn’t understand.

“Saving you from what?””

“The school.””

The room went quiet.

“Marcus…”

“You don’t understand how bad it was.””

“Then tell me.””

He took a breath.

“My complaint reached the district office.””

“Okay.””

“And someone threatened my family.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

He sounded frustrated.

“Everyone thinks Principal Harrison was the top. He wasn’t.””

I remembered his words.

The missing file.

The hidden truth.

“What happened after that?””

“My mother found out someone was trying to destroy me.””

“And she made you quit?””

“She made me leave.””

“That’s not the same thing.””

“No.””

His voice became heavy.

“But at fourteen, I thought it was.””

I looked down.

For the first time, I realized there were two versions of the same story.

The one everyone knew.

And the one nobody survived telling.

“Why didn’t you come back?””

Marcus was quiet.

Then he said:

“Because I was ashamed.””

I froze.

“Ashamed?””

“I thought leaving meant I was weak.””

My heart softened.

“But now?””

“Now Malik is standing where I stood.””

I closed my eyes.

“And you won’t let that happen again.””

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“I won’t.””

That night, Dr. Carter called me.

I almost didn’t answer.

But I did.

“Hello?””

“Olivia.””

Her voice sounded exhausted.

“I know you found the file.””

I didn’t respond.

“I know what it looks like.””

“Then explain.””

Silence.

Then:

“I made the decision.””

My heart sank.

“You did.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her voice broke slightly.

“Because I was trying to protect my son.””

I gripped my phone.

“You let him suffer.””

“No.””

She sounded desperate.

“I tried to keep him alive.””

The words shocked me.

“What does that mean?””

A long pause.

Then she whispered:

“Because the person who threatened Marcus wasn’t a teacher.””

“Who was it?””

Dr. Carter answered.

And the name she gave me changed everything.

May you like

Because it wasn’t someone at the school.

It was someone who had authority over the entire district.
