Chapter 6: The Hidden Recording
By lunchtime, the entire school knew something was happening.
Not the details.
Not the truth.
Just rumors.
Rumors moved faster than facts.
Some students said Mrs. Baxter was getting fired.
Others said Olivia had made everything up.
Others said Malik was lying.
That was the part that hurt the most.
People who weren’t there were already choosing sides.
I sat across from Malik in the cafeteria.
He barely touched his food.
“Did you hear?”” I asked.
He nodded.
“Everyone’s talking.””
“Are you okay?””
He looked at me.
“No.””
It was the first honest answer he had given.
“I’m tired.””
I didn’t know what to say.
So I just sat there.
After a moment, he whispered:
“I thought if I stayed quiet, things would get better.””
My heart hurt.
“Malik…”
“I watched what happened to Marcus.””
I looked up.
“What do you mean?””
He stared at the table.
“He told everyone the truth.””
“And?””
“And nobody listened.””
The cafeteria noise seemed to disappear.
“He stopped smiling after that,” Malik said.
I swallowed.
“Your brother never told you what happened?””
“He tried.””
Malik looked away.
“My parents told him to forget about it.””
“Why?””
“Because they thought fighting the school would only make things worse.””
I understood then.
Everyone had been afraid.
Teachers.
Parents.
Students.
Fear had protected Mrs. Baxter for years.
Until one person decided not to be afraid anymore.
After lunch, Dr. Carter called a meeting.
This time, it wasn’t in a classroom.
It was in the district office.
The building smelled like coffee and old paperwork.
I sat across from Dr. Carter, Jordan, Malik, and two investigators.
One of them opened a folder.
“We need to verify the video.””
I nodded.
“It’s original.””
The investigator looked at me.
“Did you edit it?””
“No.””
“Add anything?””
“No.””
He nodded.
“That helps.””
Dr. Carter looked exhausted.
“There’s something else.””
She placed a document on the table.
“What is it?”” Malik asked.
She looked at him carefully.
“A hidden audio file.””
My eyebrows lifted.
“What?””
“It was attached to an old complaint.””
Jordan leaned forward.
“From Marcus?””
Dr. Carter nodded.
“Someone forgot to delete it.””
She pressed play.
At first, there was only static.
Then voices.
A younger Marcus.
A younger Mrs. Baxter.
“Please stop.””
My blood ran cold.
Then Mrs. Baxter’s voice.
“You think anyone will believe you?””
Nobody moved.
The recording continued.
“You’re just a child.””
Then another voice entered.
Principal Harrison.
“Mrs. Baxter, we need to handle this carefully.””
The audio ended.
The room stayed silent.
Malik looked like he couldn’t breathe.
“That was him.””
Dr. Carter nodded.
“Yes.””
“That was my brother.””
Nobody spoke.
Then the investigator picked up the document.
“Based on this evidence, we may have enough to reopen every complaint.””
I looked at Dr. Carter.
“Will she be punished?””
Dr. Carter didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she looked at the folder.
“There’s something strange.””
“What?””
“The audio file was hidden inside the complaint system.””
“So?””
“So whoever hid it wanted it found eventually.””
A chill moved through me.
“Why?””
Dr. Carter looked at me.
“Because whoever saved that recording knew this day would come.””
My phone buzzed.
Everyone looked at me.
Another message.
This time, from a number I recognized.
My face went pale.
Because it wasn’t a threat.
It was a warning.
*Olivia, don’t trust Dr. Carter. The person who protected Mrs. Baxter isn’t who you think.*
May you like
And underneath the message was a name.
A name that changed everything.
