Chapter 12: The Person Above Everyone

I didn’t sleep.

Not because I was scared.

Because I was trying to understand.

The entire time, we thought the enemy was Mrs. Baxter.

Then we thought it was Principal Harrison.

Then we thought it was Dr. Carter.

But now there was someone else.

Someone above them.

Someone powerful enough to erase complaints.

Powerful enough to scare a fourteen-year-old boy into silence.

The next morning, Dr. Carter asked me to meet her before school.

This time, she didn’t look like a powerful district official.

She looked like a mother who hadn’t slept.

“I owe you the truth,” she said.

We sat in her car outside the school.

Rain covered the windshield.

Three days earlier, I would have trusted her completely.

Now I wasn’t sure what to believe.

“Tell me everything.””

She nodded.

“Three years ago, Marcus reported Mrs. Baxter.””

“I know.””

“No, you know the school version.””

She looked down.

“The real version is worse.””

She explained that after Marcus filed his complaint, the district investigation began.

For two weeks, everything looked normal.

Then one night, someone came to their house.

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Dr. Carter looked at me.

“The district superintendent.””

I froze.

“The person above everyone?””

She nodded.

“He told us Marcus’s complaint would destroy the school.””

“That’s not his decision.””

“No.””

Her voice became bitter.

“But he acted like it was.””

“What did he threaten?””

She looked out the window.

“He threatened Marcus.””

The rain grew louder.

“He said if Marcus continued, he would be labeled a troubled student.””

I shook my head.

“That’s horrible.””

“It got worse.””

She took a shaky breath.

“He said they had ways to make sure no one believed him.””

I understood then.

Not one person.

A system.

A group of adults protecting each other.

“What did you do?””

“I made a deal.””

I looked at her.

“You signed the withdrawal.””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell Marcus the whole truth?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because he was fourteen.””

I didn’t know what to say.

“I thought I could fix it quietly.””

“But you couldn’t.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“And I have regretted it every day.””

For a moment, I believed her.

Not because she was innocent.

Because she looked like someone who had been carrying guilt for years.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Rachel.

*I found the missing file. You need to see this before they destroy it.*

I showed Dr. Carter.

Her face changed.

“Rachel?””

“You know her?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Dr. Carter looked away.

“She was the one who helped Marcus.””

My heart raced.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought she was gone.””

“She’s back.””

Dr. Carter immediately started the car.

“We need to find her.””

“Why?””

“Because if she found the missing file…”

She stopped.

“What?””

Her face turned pale.

“Then they know too.””

We drove toward the old district archive building.

The place was almost abandoned.

Rachel stood outside holding a folder.

When she saw us, she looked relieved.

Then afraid.

“You brought her?””

I stepped forward.

“She knows.””

Rachel looked at Dr. Carter.

“Then you finally told her.””

Dr. Carter nodded.

“What’s in the file?””

Rachel handed it to me.

“This.””

Inside was a list.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

My hands shook as I read.

It wasn’t just about complaints.

It was about covering them up.

Money had changed hands.

Records had been altered.

People had been rewarded.

Then I reached the final page.

One signature appeared at the bottom.

The same signature from three years ago.

The person who ordered everything.

The person who controlled the school.

The district.

The investigations.

I looked up.

“Who is this?””

Nobody answered.

Then Rachel whispered:

“The person who has been protecting Mrs. Baxter from the beginning.””

A car engine suddenly roared behind us.

We turned.

A black vehicle stopped near the building.

The door opened.

A man stepped out.

Dr. Carter’s face went pale.

Because she knew him.

And so did everyone else.

May you like

It was the district superintendent.

And he was holding a copy of the file we thought was hidden forever.
