Chapter 8: The Recording Nobody Heard

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

The abandoned building disappeared around me.

The cold air.

The broken windows.

The empty shelves.

Everything disappeared.

There was only that voice.

My daughter’s voice.

Saying she was afraid of me.

“Turn it off.””

Vanessa watched my face.

“Why?””

My eyes burned.

“Turn it off.””

She lowered the recorder.

“Daniel, you need to understand.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I need to find Lily.””

“You need to listen.””

I stared at her.

“You kidnapped our daughter.””

“She’s safe.””

“Where?””

Silence.

That was enough.

I stepped forward.

“Where is she?””

Vanessa looked down.

“She’s with someone who can protect her.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

*Don’t believe everything you hear.*

I looked at Vanessa.

Then back at the phone.

Another message came.

*Ask her why she edited the recording.*

My eyes narrowed.

I looked at the recorder in Vanessa’s hand.

“You edited it.””

Her expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

A tiny crack.

“No.””

“Play the whole thing.””

“Daniel—”

“Play it.””

She hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

I reached for the recorder.

She pulled it away.

“Stop.””

“Why?””

“Because you won’t understand.””

“I’m her father.””

The words came out louder than I expected.

“I’m the one who stayed.””

Vanessa flinched.

That hurt more than I wanted it to.

Because some part of me still cared.

But caring didn’t mean ignoring the truth.

The door behind me suddenly opened.

I turned.

Rachel stood there.

And beside her was Lily.

My daughter ran toward me.

“Daddy!””

I dropped to my knees.

I held her so tightly I was afraid she might disappear again.

“Oh my God.””

She buried her face against me.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I held her shoulders.

“Never say that.””

Vanessa looked shocked.

“How did you find her?””

Rachel stared at her.

“Because you made the same mistake you always make.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“What?””

“You underestimated everyone.””

Lily looked at Vanessa.

Then quickly looked away.

I noticed.

“Lily,” I said softly.

She looked at me.

“Did Mommy hurt you?””

Her lips trembled.

Before she could answer, Vanessa interrupted.

“Don’t put words in her mouth.””

I stood.

“No one is talking to you.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked small.

Not powerful.

Not in control.

Small.

Rachel stepped forward.

“Daniel, there’s something you need to know.””

“What?””

She looked at Lily.

Then at Vanessa.

“The bruises weren’t the worst part.””

My stomach dropped.

“What do you mean?””

Rachel reached into her bag.

She pulled out a folder.

“I found this hidden in Vanessa’s office.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Give me that.””

Rachel held it tighter.

“No.””

“What is it?”” I asked.

Rachel opened the folder.

Inside were therapy notes.

Lily’s therapy notes.

My hands shook.

“She was taking Lily to someone.””

“Who?””

Rachel looked at Vanessa.

“Someone who wasn’t a therapist.””

The silence was terrifying.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

Rachel did.

“Her mother’s old doctor.””

I frowned.

“Her mother died years ago.””

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“But the doctor didn’t.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What was he doing with Lily?””

Nobody answered.

Then Lily whispered:

“He told Mommy I had to forget.””

My blood turned cold.

“Forget what?””

She looked at Vanessa.

And Vanessa looked away.

Lily’s voice became smaller.

“The night I saw what happened to Grandma.””
