Chapter 7: The Room That Was Supposed To Be Empty
“Lily!””
My voice ripped through the house.
I ran from room to room, even though some part of me already knew she wasn’t there.
The bathroom.
The closet.
Under the bed.
Every place a scared eight-year-old might hide.
Nothing.
“Daniel!””
Emily’s footsteps rushed behind me.
She stopped at the doorway.
One look at my face told her everything.
“She’s gone?””
I couldn’t speak.
My eyes stayed locked on the open window.
The curtain moved slightly in the cold night air.
My daughter was gone.
Again.
And this time, I knew exactly who had taken her.
Vanessa.
I grabbed my phone and called immediately.
Straight to voicemail.
Again.
Again.
Nothing.
Michael appeared behind Emily.
His face changed when he saw the empty bed.
“No.””
I turned toward him.
“What?””
He stepped closer.
“She wouldn’t do this.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You’re defending her?””
“No.””
His voice became sharp.
“I’m saying Vanessa doesn’t act randomly.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
“It means this wasn’t about taking Lily.””
My anger stopped for a second.
“Then what was it about?””
Michael looked at the teddy bear.
“The recorder.””
I looked at the empty spot where it had been.
My stomach sank.
He was right.
Vanessa didn’t care about the stuffed animal.
She cared about what was inside it.
“What was on the last recording?”” I asked.
Michael looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
He ran a hand through his hair.
“But I know Vanessa.””
I hated that he said it.
Because he was right.
He knew a side of her I never saw.
“She keeps evidence,” Michael continued.
“Evidence of what?””
“Everything.””
Emily frowned.
“Why?””
“Control.””
The word hung in the air.
“She collects things people say. Things they do. Weaknesses. Mistakes.””
I looked toward Lily’s empty bed.
“And my daughter?””
Michael’s face tightened.
“She was the one thing Vanessa couldn’t completely control.””
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Vanessa.
I opened it.
There was a picture.
Lily sitting in a car.
Her face was pale.
But she was alive.
My knees almost gave out.
The message underneath was short.
*Stop looking.*
Another message appeared.
*Come alone if you want her back.*
Emily grabbed my arm.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“She has Lily.””
“She wants you angry.””
“She has my daughter.””
“And she wants you to walk into a trap.””
I knew Emily was right.
But knowing didn’t make it easier.
Michael stepped forward.
“I’ll go with you.””
“No.””
His expression hardened.
“You don’t understand.””
“I understand enough.””
“If Vanessa sees me, she’ll panic.””
“That sounds like a reason to bring you.””
Michael shook his head.
“No. It’s a reason not to.””
The room went quiet.
Then he looked at me.
“Daniel, she has been afraid of me for years.””
“Why?””
“Because I know what she did.””
I waited.
Michael looked at the floor.
“And because I know where she kept the first recording.””
My heart stopped.
“The first?””
He nodded.
“The one before Lily ever hid a recorder in her teddy bear.””
I drove to the location Vanessa sent.
An abandoned storage building outside town.
The kind of place nobody noticed.
The kind of place where secrets disappeared.
My hands were tight around the steering wheel.
Every red light felt like an hour.
When I arrived, Vanessa’s car was already there.
I stepped out.
“Vanessa!””
The building door opened.
She stood inside.
Alone.
At least, that’s what she wanted me to believe.
“Where is Lily?””
Vanessa stared at me.
“You came.””
“Where is she?””
Her eyes looked exhausted.
For a moment, I saw the woman I married.
The woman who laughed with me.
The woman who held my hand when we thought we might never have a child.
Then I remembered the bruises.
The recordings.
The fear in Lily’s eyes.
“I never wanted this,” Vanessa whispered.
“Then why did you do it?””
She looked away.
“Because you don’t know the whole story.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I stepped closer.
“Tell me the story.””
Her lips trembled.
“Lily isn’t innocent.””
The words made my blood freeze.
“She’s eight years old.””
“You don’t understand.””
“No, Vanessa. I understand that my daughter was scared enough to hide a recorder inside a teddy bear.””
Her face tightened.
“She was manipulated.””
“By who?””
Vanessa looked toward the darkness behind her.
Then whispered:
“By Rachel.””
I shook my head.
“You’re still blaming her?””
“Because it’s true.””
“Where is Lily?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Instead, she pulled something from her pocket.
A small digital recorder.
My breath caught.
“That’s not possible.””
Vanessa looked at it.
“This is the original.””
“What original?””
“The recording that started everything.””
She pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then a voice.
A little girl’s voice.
Lily.
“Mommy…”
I froze.
Then Vanessa looked directly at me.
“She didn’t record what you think she recorded.””
The speaker crackled.
And Lily’s voice continued:
May you like
“Mommy, I’m scared of Daddy.””
My entire body went cold.
