Chapter 6: The Man From Her Past

Michael Reed stepped inside like someone who had already lost everything.

He didn’t look like the monster I expected.

That almost made it worse.

Because monsters are easier to understand.

They have obvious faces.

Obvious signs.

But Michael looked tired.

Broken.

Like a person who had been carrying pain for years.

“You’re Daniel Carter,” he said.

It wasn’t a question.

I nodded.

“And you’re Michael.””

His eyes moved toward the stairs.

“Lily is here?””

My body immediately stiffened.

“You don’t get to walk into my house and ask about my daughter.””

Michael looked down.

“You’re right.””

The answer surprised me.

He didn’t fight.

He didn’t demand anything.

He just accepted it.

Emily stood behind me.

“Why are you here?””

Michael placed the envelope on the table.

“Because Vanessa knows I came back.””

Rachel looked at him.

“How?””

Michael gave a bitter smile.

“Because she always knows when someone threatens her secrets.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A younger Vanessa.

A younger Michael.

And a baby.

Lily.

My fingers trembled.

“She was beautiful,” Michael whispered.

I looked at him.

“You knew about her?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you disappear?””

His face changed.

Pain.

Regret.

“I didn’t.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

“I never left.””

I stared at him.

“Then where were you?””

“Trying to survive.””

That answer made no sense.

Michael sat down.

“Vanessa told me she wanted to start over. She said she needed time.””

He looked at the photograph.

“She promised she would bring Lily to me.””

“But she didn’t.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because she told me if I came near Lily, she would destroy my life.””

My jaw tightened.

“What did she have on you?””

Michael looked away.

“She knew about my past.””

“What past?””

He was quiet.

Then he said:

“I made mistakes when I was young.””

Not an excuse.

Not a denial.

Just the truth.

“But Vanessa used those mistakes to control me.””

I looked at Rachel.

She nodded.

“She did the same thing to me.””

I turned back.

“What does this have to do with Lily’s bruises?””

Michael’s expression changed.

“Everything.””

The room went still.

“What do you mean?””

Michael leaned forward.

“Vanessa didn’t become cruel overnight.””

He looked toward the stairs.

“She learned it.””

“From who?””

Michael’s eyes met mine.

And his answer chilled me.

“Her mother.””

I frowned.

“Her mother is dead.””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

A pause.

“But before she died, she left Vanessa something.””

“What?””

“A lesson.””

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Then a woman’s voice whispered:

“Daniel…”

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

It wasn’t Vanessa.

It was Lily.

“Daddy, don’t trust them.””

My heart dropped.

“Lily?””

The line crackled.

“She told me to call you.””

I stood up.

“Who did?””

A pause.

Then my daughter whispered:

“Mommy.””

The call ended.

I ran upstairs.

“Lily!””

Her bedroom door was open.

The bed was empty.

The window was slightly raised.

May you like

And sitting on her pillow was her teddy bear.

With the recorder missing.
