Chapter 5: The Name On The Paper
I read the name three times.
Four times.
It didn’t change.
The paper in my hand suddenly felt heavier than anything I had ever held.
“Daniel?””
Emily’s voice sounded far away.
I couldn’t answer.
The name stared back at me.
*Michael Reed.*
Not Daniel Carter.
Michael Reed.
“Who is that?”” Emily asked.
Rachel looked down.
“Someone Vanessa never wanted you to find.””
I placed the paper on the table.
“No.””
Rachel didn’t move.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“Lily is my daughter.””
Nobody said anything.
Because they knew what I meant.
Not biologically.
Not legally.
But in every way that mattered.
I had been there.
The first steps.
The first words.
The nightmares.
The fever nights.
The school plays.
The scraped knees.
I had been her father.
A piece of paper couldn’t erase that.
But another thought entered my mind.
Why would Vanessa hide this?
“What is this?”” I asked.
Rachel sat down.
“A copy of a document Vanessa destroyed.””
“When?””
“Before Lily was born.””
My hands tightened.
“You’re saying Vanessa knew?””
Rachel nodded.
“She knew Michael was Lily’s biological father.””
The room went quiet.
“And she married me anyway?””
Rachel looked uncomfortable.
“Yes.””
Emily shook her head.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
“It does,” Rachel said.
“Vanessa was afraid Michael would expose her.””
“Expose her for what?””
Rachel looked at me.
“That’s the part you don’t know.””
I waited.
She continued.
“Michael wasn’t just someone she dated.””
The way she said it made my stomach twist.
“He was dangerous.””
I looked at the birth certificate again.
“What happened to him?””
Rachel hesitated.
“He disappeared.””
“When?””
“Shortly after Lily was born.””
I stood up.
“Did Vanessa have something to do with that?””
Rachel didn’t answer immediately.
And that scared me more than a yes.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from Vanessa.
*Please don’t listen to Rachel. She’s trying to destroy our family.*
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
*Ask her why she left without saying goodbye.*
I looked at Rachel.
She saw my expression.
“What did Vanessa say?””
I showed her.
Rachel’s face changed.
“She’s still using the same lie.””
“What lie?””
Rachel looked toward Lily’s bedroom.
“About why I left.””
I lowered my voice.
“Tell me.””
Rachel took a deep breath.
“Because I found out what Vanessa was doing.””
“What was she doing?””
Rachel looked at me.
“She was keeping a file.””
“A file?””
“About Lily.””
My blood ran cold.
“What kind of file?””
Rachel opened another folder.
Inside were pages.
Medical records.
School notes.
Behavior reports.
Photos.
Almost everything about Lily’s life.
But mixed between them were notes written by Vanessa.
I picked up one.
*She’s becoming too emotional.*
Another.
*She asks too many questions.*
Another.
My hand stopped.
*Need to make her understand obedience.*
I dropped the page.
Emily looked horrified.
“She wrote this?””
Rachel nodded.
“She wanted Lily to be perfect.””
“She’s a child.””
“I know.””
I looked toward the stairs.
My daughter was upstairs sleeping.
Probably holding that teddy bear.
Probably still afraid.
And I had spent years thinking I was protecting her.
A knock interrupted us.
Everyone froze.
Rachel looked terrified.
“Who is that?””
I walked toward the door.
“Daniel,” Emily warned.
I looked through the window.
A man stood outside.
Tall.
Dark jacket.
I didn’t recognize him.
But Rachel did.
The color disappeared from her face.
“No.””
I turned.
“Who is it?””
Her voice barely came out.
“Michael.””
My hand stopped on the doorknob.
The man outside looked directly at me.
Then he raised his hand.
Holding something.
A small envelope.
I opened the door.
The man looked at me for several seconds.

Then he said:
“You need to know the truth about what Vanessa did before Lily was born.””
