Chapter 6: The Hidden Inheritance
The private meeting room at the airport was silent except for the sound of rain hitting the windows.
New York weather had changed while we were talking.
The sky outside was dark.
Storm clouds covered the city.
It felt appropriate.
Captain Harris sat across from me.
Laura stood near the table.
Ethan remained by the window.
He looked like a stranger.
Not my grandson.
A stranger wearing his face.
“Explain,” I said.
Ethan didn’t turn around.
“Twenty years ago, you created a trust.””
“Yes.””
“And you put your remaining influence into it.””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
I studied him.
“Because I wanted you to earn responsibility.””
He finally turned.
“And you thought I wasn’t ready?””
“I thought nobody was ready until they proved themselves.””
His laugh was bitter.
“That’s what you always said.””
I leaned forward.
“Because it’s true.””
“No.””
His voice became sharper.
“You said that because you never trusted me.””
The accusation surprised me.
Not because I believed it.
Because I realized he believed it.
“You were my grandson.””
“That’s not the same as believing in me.””
The room became quiet.
For a moment, I saw the child again.
The little boy standing in the factory.
Waiting for approval.
Waiting for me to say he was special.
Maybe I had made mistakes.
Maybe I had focused too much on building the company and not enough on building the person who would inherit it.
But mistakes did not justify betrayal.
“Ethan,” I said carefully.
“What?””
“Did you forge my signature?””
He looked away.
That was all the answer I needed.
“I didn’t ask if you were involved.””
Silence.
“I asked if you did it.””
His hands tightened.
“No.””
A pause.
“Not directly.””
Laura gasped.
Captain Harris stood.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan looked angry.
“It means I didn’t create the video.””
“Then who did?””
He didn’t answer.
I stared at him.
“You brought someone else into this.””
“No.””
“Then why are you protecting them?””
His silence continued.
I felt something cold settle in my chest.
Because I realized Ethan was not the beginning.
He was the middle.
Someone else was behind this.
Laura checked her tablet.
“Mr. Bennett…”
Her voice sounded different.
“What?””
She looked at the screen.
“The trust records.””
“What about them?””
“They were accessed last night.””
I stood immediately.
“By whom?””
She shook her head.
“The system says authorized access.””
“Whose authorization?””
Her face turned pale.
“Yours.””
I stared.
“That’s impossible.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
Captain Harris stepped closer.
“Someone is using your identity everywhere.””
Exactly.
The fake signature.
The fake video.
The trust access.
Someone was not just stealing the company.
They were becoming me.
Ethan looked at me.
And for the first time that day, I saw fear in his eyes.
“Grandpa…”
I looked at him.
“What?””
“You need to listen.””
I waited.
“Leave the company alone.””
The room went silent.
I couldn’t believe what I heard.
“Excuse me?””
“If you fight this, you’ll destroy everything.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“If I fight this, I might save it.””
Ethan stepped closer.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
He looked toward the door.
Then lowered his voice.
“They know everything about you.””
A chill ran through me.
“Who?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“The person who helped me.””
I stared.
“Who helped you?””
Before he answered, the lights in the room flickered.
Everyone looked up.
Then Laura’s tablet went black.
Her phone shut off.
Captain Harris checked his.
“No signal.””
The room fell silent.
Then the door opened.
A security officer stood outside.
“Mr. Bennett?””
“Yes?””
The officer looked nervous.
“There’s someone downstairs asking to see you.””
“Who?””
The officer swallowed.
“He said you would know him.””
I stood still.
“Name?””
The officer looked at a piece of paper in his hand.
Then he read it.
“Robert Bennett.””
My heart stopped.
Robert.
My younger brother.
The man who disappeared from my life thirty years ago.
The man everyone believed was gone forever.
But that wasn’t possible.
Because Robert Bennett had been declared dead.

And yet someone using his name was waiting downstairs.
With the answer to who was really destroying my airline.
