Chapter 12: The Brother’s Final Secret

Nobody spoke after I showed them the photograph.

Not because they didn’t understand.

Because they understood too quickly.

Someone had created an entire identity.

My name.

My history.

My records.

My life.

Captain Harris looked at the phone.

“This is impossible.””

I nodded.

“It should be.””

Robert stared at the image.

His face had lost all color.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“You recognize this.””

He didn’t answer.

“Robert.””

His eyes moved toward me.

“I’ve seen him before.””

The room went silent.

“When?””

Robert sat down slowly.

“Thirty years ago.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Explain.””

Robert looked at the floor.

“Before I disappeared, I discovered something.””

“What?””

“That someone was copying company documents.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“You.””

I froze.

“What?””

“I found records with your signature.””

“Fake signatures?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Real ones.””

I didn’t understand.

“My signature?””

“Yes.””

Robert looked terrified.

“But you didn’t sign them.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What are you saying?””

Robert whispered:

“There was someone who looked exactly like you.””

The room became silent.

“That’s impossible.””

“I thought so too.””

Robert rubbed his face.

“He appeared at meetings. He spoke like you. He knew things only you knew.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because nobody believed me.””

I looked away.

Thirty years.

My brother had carried this secret for thirty years.

And I never knew.

“What happened to him?””

Robert looked toward the window.

“I don’t know.””

Then Ethan spoke.

“Victor knows.””

Everyone turned.

Ethan nodded.

“He showed me something.””

My eyes narrowed.

“When?””

“Before the airport.””

“What?””

“A file.””

“What file?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then opened his phone.

“There were pictures.””

He showed me.

The first image was Victor.

The second was my signature.

The third was a man.

A man who looked like me.

Not similar.

Not close.

Exactly like me.

My hands became cold.

“Who is he?””

Ethan looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

Then Robert whispered:

“I do.””

Everyone looked at him.

Robert stared at the picture.

And tears appeared in his eyes.

“That’s our father.””

I felt the room spin.

“Our father died when we were young.””

Robert shook his head.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“We thought he died.””

I stared at my brother.

“What are you saying?””

He looked at me.

“Our father had a secret.””

The photograph trembled in his hand.

“He had another son.””

Nobody moved.

I felt like the ground had disappeared.

Another son.

A brother I never knew existed.

A man who looked like me.

A man who had been hiding for decades.

Then my phone rang.

This time, the number was not unknown.

It was saved.

But I had never seen it before.

The name on the screen made my heart stop.

*Arthur Bennett.*

My own name.

I answered slowly.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a voice spoke.

My voice.

Older.

Calmer.

“Hello, Arthur.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“Who is this?””

The man laughed softly.

“You already know.””

I stood frozen.

The voice continued.

“I’ve waited a very long time to meet you.””

I looked at the photograph again.

The man who looked like me.

The man who stole my identity.

The man who destroyed my company.

Then he said:

“After all…”

May you like

“I am the original Bennett heir.””

And the call ended.
