Chapter 3: The Heir Who Betrayed Me

The name hung in the air like a storm cloud.

Ethan Bennett.

My grandson.

The person many believed would carry my legacy into the future.

The person I had defended for years.

The person I had trusted more than anyone.

The businessman across the aisle looked confused.

“Your grandson?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

Captain Harris sat down in the empty seat across from me.

“I don’t understand.””

Neither did I.

Not completely.

Twelve years earlier, when I sold my controlling shares, I had refused to disappear.

I stayed involved as an advisor.

I watched young employees grow.

I attended meetings.

I answered questions.

And I trained Ethan because I believed family was not about inheritance.

It was about responsibility.

But somewhere along the way, something changed.

“Mr. Bennett,” Daniel said carefully, “are you saying Ethan is buying the airline without your approval?””

I looked at the envelope.

“He bought shares from investors who trusted him.””

“That’s legal.””

“Yes.””

“Then why are you worried?””

I looked at him.

“Because I know my grandson.””

The cabin lights reflected against the window.

Below us, thousands of feet above the ground, the world looked peaceful.

But I knew better.

Some storms happened where nobody could see them.

Jessica remained standing nearby.

She looked ashamed.

“Mr. Bennett…”

I turned.

“What?””

“Why did you keep the envelope with you?””

I stared at her.

“Because I wanted to deliver it myself.””

“But why not send someone?””

I looked at my old leather bag.

“Because I wanted one last ordinary day.””

Nobody expected that answer.

I continued.

“I spent forty years being recognized everywhere I went.””

I smiled sadly.

“People shook my hand because of my money. They listened because of my title.””

I touched the photograph inside my bag.

“I wanted to know if anyone would still treat me with kindness when they thought I had nothing.””

Jessica looked down.

“And I failed.””

I did not answer.

Because she already knew.

Captain Harris received a message on his phone.

He read it.

Then his face tightened.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

“Mr. Bennett…”

He hesitated.

“The airline board is asking if you are onboard this flight.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Why?””

Daniel showed me the message.

A company alert had been sent.

Someone knew I was carrying the agreement.

Someone knew I was on the plane.

I stared at the screen.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel frowned.

“Why?””

“Because only three people knew about this document.””

“Who?””

I looked at him.

“Me.””

A pause.

“My attorney.””

Another pause.

“And Ethan.””

The cabin suddenly felt colder.

The businessman whispered.

“Are you saying your grandson leaked the information?””

I looked away.

“I don’t know.””

But deep down, I feared I did.

A few minutes later, the captain received another message.

This time, his face changed completely.

“Captain?”” I asked.

He slowly looked up.

“Mr. Bennett…”

“What?””

“There is someone waiting for you when we land.””

“Who?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he answered.

“Ethan Bennett.””

My hands tightened around the leather bag.

My grandson had never shown fear in front of me.

Not once.

But now I wondered if he was waiting at the airport because he wanted to explain.

Or because he wanted to stop me.

The businessman looked at me.

“What are you going to do?””

I looked toward the cockpit door.

Then toward the passengers who had witnessed everything.

“I’m going to ask my grandson one question.””

“What question?””

I looked down at the burn mark on my pants.

The same burn caused by a person who thought I was powerless.

Then I looked at the envelope containing the future of my company.

“Why did he betray the man who gave him everything?””

As the plane began its descent into New York, my phone rang for the first time all flight.

The screen showed a name I had not expected.

Not Ethan.

Not my lawyer.

Not a board member.

It was Emily.

My granddaughter.

I answered.

“Hello?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Grandpa…”

I immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

There was a long silence.

Then she whispered:

“Why is your name all over the news?””

I looked at Captain Harris.

The cabin went quiet.

May you like

Because whatever was happening on the ground had already started.

And before the plane even landed, the world knew Arthur Bennett was back.
