Chapter 2: The Secret Inside the Envelope

The captain closed the cockpit door behind him and stood in the aisle.

Nobody spoke.

The entire first-class cabin had transformed from a place of quiet luxury into a courtroom.

And Jessica was standing in the center of it.

Her confidence was gone.

The businessman who had laughed earlier slowly sat back down.

He looked embarrassed.

“Mr. Bennett,” he said quietly, “I owe you an apology.””

I looked at him.

“For what?””

He glanced around.

“For assuming I knew who you were based on how you looked.””

I smiled slightly.

“That mistake is more common than you think.””

The captain looked at the envelope again.

His name was Daniel Harris. I remembered him from years earlier when he was a young pilot attending one of our training programs.

Back then, he had asked questions nobody else wanted to ask.

That was why I remembered him.

“Captain Harris,” I said, “I did not want anyone knowing I was on this flight.””

He nodded.

“I understand.””

“No,” I replied.

“You don’t.””

The cabin grew quiet.

“I wanted to see the airline as a normal passenger sees it.””

Daniel looked at Jessica.

“And what did you see?””

I looked down at the coffee stain on my pants.

“I saw someone who believed an old man did not belong here.””

Jessica swallowed.

“Mr. Bennett, I—”

I raised my hand.

Not angrily.

Just enough to stop her.

“An apology means something only when the person understands what they did.””

Her face turned red.

“I made a mistake.””

I looked at her.

“No. A mistake is dropping a cup.””

Nobody moved.

“A choice is looking at someone, deciding they are beneath you, and treating them that way.””

Jessica lowered her eyes.

Captain Harris stepped forward.

“Mr. Bennett, may I ask why the board doesn’t know about this meeting?””

I looked at the envelope.

“Because I wanted to confirm something before tomorrow.””

“What?””

I opened my leather bag again and removed another document.

“The buyer.””

The captain read the first page.

His eyes widened.

“Seventy percent…”

He looked at me.

“You sold your controlling shares twelve years ago.””

“Yes.””

“And now someone is buying the company?””

“Yes.””

The businessman leaned forward.

“Isn’t that a good thing?””

I looked at him.

“Sometimes the biggest danger does not come from someone destroying a company.””

I tapped the paper.

“It comes from someone buying it.””

The cabin became silent again.

Captain Harris looked confused.

“Who is the buyer?””

I closed the folder.

“That is what I was going to reveal tomorrow.””

Jessica stared at me.

“Then why bring it on the plane?””

I looked at her.

“Because sometimes people show their true character when they believe nobody important is watching.””

Her face changed.

She knew exactly what I meant.

The captain took a breath.

“Mr. Bennett, I need to ask something.””

“What?””

“Why did you fly commercial instead of private?””

I smiled.

“Because airplanes are not built for executives.””

I looked around the cabin.

“They are built for passengers.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then a flight attendant from the back approached carefully.

“Captain?””

Daniel turned.

“Yes?””

She looked nervous.

“There’s a passenger in row three who says he witnessed what happened.””

The captain nodded.

“Send him here.””

A few seconds later, an elderly man walked forward holding his phone.

“I recorded part of it,” he said.

Jessica’s eyes widened.

“You recorded me?””

The man frowned.

“I recorded because I thought something terrible was happening.””

He handed the phone to Captain Harris.

The captain watched the video.

His expression became darker with every second.

The footage showed Jessica looking directly at my seat.

It showed her tilting the cup.

It showed the coffee falling.

No accident.

No mistake.

A deliberate act.

Daniel looked at Jessica.

“Why?””

Her lips parted.

“I…”

She had no answer.

The captain turned the phone off.

“Mr. Bennett, this changes everything.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

Jessica stepped closer.

“Please.””

Her voice was different now.

Smaller.

“I need my job.””

I looked at her.

“What did you think would happen when you treated someone like that?””

She started crying.

“I didn’t know who you were.””

I sighed.

“That is exactly the problem.””

The businessman looked uncomfortable.

The other passengers watched silently.

Then Captain Harris noticed something on the document in my hand.

A name.

His face suddenly changed.

“Sir…”

I looked at him.

“What is it?””

He pointed.

“Is this person really the buyer?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

Daniel’s hands trembled.

Because he knew the name.

Everyone in the company knew the name.

The person buying the airline was not a stranger.

It was someone who had been inside the company for years.

Someone trusted.

Someone I had personally helped rise through the ranks.

Captain Harris looked at me.

“Mr. Bennett…”

His voice became quiet.

“Are you sure about this?””

I looked toward the airplane window.

“Yes.””

“Because if this is true, the entire airline is about to change.””

I placed the document back into my bag.

“Tomorrow was supposed to be the day the board discovered the truth.””

I paused.

“But after what happened today, I think they need to know sooner.””

The captain stared at me.

“Who is the buyer?””

I looked at Jessica one last time.

Then I said the name that made everyone in the cabin freeze.

“Ethan Bennett.””

The captain stepped back.

May you like

Because Ethan Bennett was not just an executive.

He was my grandson.
