Chapter 9: The House That Remembered

The old house looked exactly the same.

That was the worst part.

The peeling white paint.

The cracked mailbox.

The tree in the front yard where my mother used to hang Christmas lights.

Everything looked frozen in time.

Except for one thing.

Someone had been inside recently.

The front door wasn’t locked.

Detective Harper raised her hand.

“Stay behind me.””

My father stood beside me.

For once, he didn’t try to tell me what was best.

Maybe because he knew he had lost that right.

My mother held my hand as we walked inside.

The smell hit me immediately.

Dust.

Old wood.

And something familiar.

Her perfume.

I stopped.

“Mom.””

She looked at me.

“I smell it too.””

We entered the living room.

The furniture was gone.

The walls were empty.

But there were marks where our family pictures used to hang.

My childhood.

My mother.

My old life.

Aunt Denise looked around.

“This place was abandoned.””

Detective Harper shook her head.

“Not anymore.””

She pointed.

On the floor were fresh footprints.

Someone had been here.

Recently.

My father whispered:

“Daniel.””

We searched room by room.

The kitchen.

The hallway.

The upstairs bedrooms.

Then we reached my old room.

The door was slightly open.

I pushed it.

And froze.

Everything was still there.

My old bookshelf.

My childhood drawings.

My stuffed animals.

It was like someone had preserved a memory.

But on my desk was something new.

A box.

With my name on it.

*MAYA.*

My mother gasped.

“Don’t touch it.””

But I already knew.

This was meant for me.

I opened it slowly.

Inside were dozens of letters.

All addressed to me.

The oldest one was dated:

October 2020.

Six years ago.

My hands shook as I opened it.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

*Maya,*

*If you are reading this, then everything went wrong.*

I looked at my father.

He went pale.

I continued.

*Your father made a choice. Vanessa made a choice. I made a choice. But you were the one who paid for all of it.*

My breathing became uneven.

Detective Harper read over my shoulder.

The letter continued.

*I wanted to tell you the truth sooner. But I was afraid.*

I looked at my mother.

“Who wrote this?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

I opened another letter.

*Your mother did not abandon you. She was taken from you.*

My eyes filled.

The next sentence made my heart stop.

*But she wasn’t the only person who was supposed to disappear.*

I looked at Detective Harper.

“This is about me.””

She nodded.

The next pages were filled with information.

Dates.

Names.

Bank transfers.

Evidence.

Someone had been documenting everything.

Then I reached the final page.

Only one sentence was written.

*Maya, your father never told you why he chose Vanessa over your mother.*

My stomach twisted.

Below it was another line.

*Ask him what happened the night you were born.*

I looked up.

My father was already crying.

“Dad?””

He stepped backward.

“Maya…”

“What happened when I was born?””

He didn’t answer.

My mother looked at him.

“Richard?””

He covered his face.

“I never wanted you to know.””

The room went silent.

Detective Harper moved closer.

“Know what?””

My father looked at me.

And whispered:

“The woman who raised you…”

He swallowed.

“…isn’t your biological mother.””

Nobody moved.

My entire world tilted.

My mother stared at him.

“What did you say?””

My father’s voice broke.

“Angela is your mother. But there was another secret.””

He looked at me.

“One that Vanessa knew before anyone else.””

A sound came from upstairs.

A floorboard creaked.

Everyone turned.

Someone was standing at the top of the stairs.

Watching us.

A familiar voice spoke.

“You finally found the truth, Maya.””

My blood froze.

Because the voice wasn’t Daniel’s.

It belonged to someone else.

May you like

Someone I knew.

Someone who had been part of my life all along.
