Chapter 11: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Daniel Brooks stood outside the window.

Alive.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakably real.

My father looked like he had seen a ghost.

Because he had spent six years believing this man was dead.

Detective Harper immediately moved toward the door.

“Everyone stay back.””

But Daniel didn’t run.

He simply walked toward the entrance.

Like he knew exactly what would happen.

The door opened.

And there he was.

The man who had existed only in photographs and lies.

He looked at my father.

“Hello, Richard.””

My father’s voice shook.

“You’re alive.””

Daniel gave a small smile.

“That’s what everyone wanted you to believe.””

My mother stepped forward.

“You helped them.””

Daniel looked at her.

“No.””

His answer surprised me.

“I helped myself.””

Nobody expected that.

He walked into the room.

“I didn’t cause the accident.””

Detective Harper kept her hand near her radio.

“Then what did you do?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I cleaned up the mess.””

I hated how calm he sounded.

“What mess?””

He looked around the old house.

“This.””

He pointed at the walls.

“The lies. The fake records. The people pretending they were innocent.””

My father stepped forward.

“You blackmailed me.””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked everyone.

“Why?””

“Because you let Vanessa destroy a family.””

My father looked away.

Daniel continued.

“You knew Angela was alive.””

My mother looked at Richard.

“And you hid that.””

Daniel looked at me.

“You deserved to know.””

I felt anger rise.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

His expression changed.

For the first time, I saw regret.

“Because I was a coward.””

The answer was too simple.

Too human.

Too late.

Detective Harper stepped closer.

“Daniel, you’re connected to multiple crimes.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“Forgery. Fraud. Identity theft.””

“I know.””

“Why confess?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because Maya deserves the full truth.””

He reached into his jacket.

Everyone tensed.

But he pulled out a small recorder.

“I kept this.””

He placed it on the table.

“What is it?”” I asked.

“A conversation.””

Between who?

He pressed play.

Vanessa’s voice filled the room.

“Once Angela is gone, Richard will finally understand what he has.””

My father closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

Daniel’s voice responded.

“You’re talking about murder.””

Vanessa laughed.

“No. I’m talking about freedom.””

I felt sick.

Detective Harper listened carefully.

The recording continued.

“And Maya?””

Vanessa answered:

“She’s just a child. She’ll believe whatever we tell her.””

My hands shook.

I had spent six years living inside someone else’s story.

Daniel stopped the recording.

“I should have gone to the police.””

My mother looked at him.

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

Detective Harper picked up the recorder.

“This changes everything.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I stared at him.

“Sorry doesn’t give me back six years.””

He lowered his head.

“I know.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then my father quietly said:

“There’s still something you don’t know.””

I turned.

“What now?””

His face was filled with shame.

Daniel looked at him.

“Richard…”

My father continued.

“Vanessa didn’t choose you randomly.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at me.

“She knew something about you before you were born.””

I frowned.

“About me?””

He nodded.

“She knew your mother was pregnant.””

“That’s not a secret.””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“She knew you existed before Angela even told me.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Daniel.

“What are you saying?””

Daniel answered.

“She was watching your family long before the accident.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“How long?””

Daniel looked at the old house.

“Since before you were born.””

My mother whispered:

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me.

And the answer changed everything.

“Because Maya wasn’t just a child to Vanessa.””

May you like

He paused.

“She was the key to everything.””
