Chapter 12: The Secret Maya Carried

I couldn’t understand.

A key.

To what?

I was just a child.

A girl who loved drawing pictures, reading books, and waiting for her mother to come home.

How could I possibly be the center of all this?

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

“It means Vanessa didn’t want your mother gone because of Richard.””

My father looked confused.

“Then why?””

Daniel walked toward the old bookshelf.

He ran his fingers along the dusty wood.

“Because of this house.””

I frowned.

“The house?””

He nodded.

“Your grandfather owned this property.””

My mother looked surprised.

“What?””

Nobody had ever told me that.

Daniel continued.

“Before he died, he created a trust.””

Detective Harper looked interested.

“What kind of trust?””

“A family trust.””

He turned toward me.

“And Maya was the beneficiary.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

My father looked down.

“I never told you.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because I was afraid.””

There it was again.

The same excuse.

But this time, it was bigger.

“You always say that.””

He looked at me.

“I know.””

Daniel opened a drawer in the bookshelf.

Inside was a folder.

He pulled it out.

“This is what Vanessa wanted.””

I opened the folder.

The first page had my name.

*Maya Elizabeth Brooks — Sole Beneficiary.*

I read the details.

The property.

The investments.

The accounts.

The amount of money was more than I could imagine.

My hands started shaking.

“She wanted my inheritance?””

Daniel nodded.

“She couldn’t access it while Angela was alive.””

My mother looked stunned.

“Because I was the legal guardian.””

“Exactly.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa’s name on the documents.

“She needed Angela gone.””

I felt sick.

Six years.

All the pain.

All the lies.

All because someone wanted money.

But Daniel wasn’t finished.

“There’s more.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He pulled out another document.

“This is why she was watching your family before you were born.””

I read the page.

Then I froze.

The document wasn’t about money.

It was a medical record.

My name was at the top.

But beside it was another name.

A name I didn’t recognize.

*Emily Carter.*

I looked up.

“Who is Emily Carter?””

Nobody answered.

Then Evelyn stepped forward.

Her face had gone white.

“No.””

I turned toward her.

“You know that name.””

She looked terrified.

“She was my daughter.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

Evelyn’s hands trembled.

“My daughter was born the same week as Maya.””

I looked between them.

“Why does that matter?””

Evelyn started crying.

“Because there was a mistake at the hospital.””

My mother grabbed the edge of the table.

“What kind of mistake?””

Evelyn looked at me.

“One that changed everything.””

My heart pounded.

“Tell me.””

She swallowed.

“The hospital records were mixed up.””

I stared.

“What?””

She nodded.

“For a few hours, two newborn babies had the wrong names.””

My blood ran cold.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Vanessa found those records.””

I looked at him.

“And?””

He looked at Evelyn.

“She believed Maya wasn’t supposed to inherit anything.””

My mind raced.

“Then why didn’t she tell anyone?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“Because she discovered something else.””

“What?””

He looked at me.

“The hospital made another mistake.””

My mother stepped closer.

“What mistake?””

Daniel pulled out the final document.

A DNA report.

My name.

My mother’s name.

And another name.

I looked at the result.

My breathing stopped.

Because the report revealed something nobody expected.

Something that made my entire childhood feel like a lie.

I looked at Angela.

Then Evelyn.

Then Daniel.

May you like

And whispered:

“Who am I?””
