Chapter 9: The Woman Behind Everything

The name on the paper made my mother collapse into the chair.

I had never seen her look that afraid.

Not when she saw Marcus.

Not when she heard Vanessa’s confession.

Not even when she discovered Ethan was alive.

This was different.

“Mom?””

She didn’t answer.

I looked at the paper.

The name stared back at me.

*Patricia Harrison.*

My grandmother.

Again.

I felt sick.

“No.””

My mother shook her head.

“She wouldn’t.””

Detective Harris watched her carefully.

“You said that before.””

My mother looked angry.

“She’s my mother.””

“And Marcus was your husband.””

The words silenced her.

Because he was right.

Love had blinded all of us.

My grandmother arrived at the station an hour later.

When she walked into the room, she knew immediately.

She saw the files.

She saw our faces.

And she knew.

“You found it.””

Nobody spoke.

My mother stood.

“Tell me you didn’t.””

My grandmother started crying.

“Claire…”

“Tell me!””

The room shook with my mother’s voice.

My grandmother sat down slowly.

“I never wanted anyone hurt.””

I laughed.

It was a bitter sound.

“Everyone says that.””

My grandmother looked at me.

“Lena, please.””

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“You watched me grow up believing my mother was dead.””

Her face crumpled.

“I thought she was.””

My mother stared at her.

“Then why did you help Marcus?””

My grandmother looked away.

The silence was enough.

My mother’s eyes filled with betrayal.

“You did.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

My mother almost smiled.

A broken smile.

“From what?””

My grandmother whispered:

“From the truth.””

Nobody moved.

Finally, Detective Harris asked:

“What truth?””

My grandmother looked at me.

And I knew whatever came next would change everything.

“You were never supposed to be born.””

The room went silent.

My heart stopped.

“What?””

My mother immediately stepped between us.

“Don’t.””

But my grandmother continued.

“Ethan wasn’t just your father.””

I stared at her.

“He was part of something bigger.””

My grandmother opened her purse.

She removed an old envelope.

“I kept this for twenty years.””

My mother recognized it.

“What is that?””

My grandmother looked at her.

“The truth about Lena’s birth.””

My hands went cold.

She placed the envelope on the table.

“There was a reason Marcus wanted custody.””

Detective Harris leaned forward.

“Why?””

My grandmother looked at me.

“Because Lena was the only person who could expose him.””

I shook my head.

“That makes no sense.””

My grandmother whispered:

“When Ethan discovered what Marcus was doing, he hid evidence.””

“Where?””

She looked at me.

“Inside you.””

Everyone froze.

My mother’s face went pale.

“What did you say?””

My grandmother opened the envelope.

Inside was a hospital record.

And a note written by Ethan.

My hands trembled as I read the first line.

*If anything happens to me, Lena is carrying the only proof that can destroy Marcus Hale.*

Then my grandmother said something that made the entire room go silent.

“Your father didn’t disappear because Marcus wanted him dead.””

She looked at my mother.

“He disappeared because he was trying to find you.””

My mother whispered:

“Find me?””

My grandmother nodded.

“And he was closer than anyone realized.””

A knock came from the station door.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

Older.

Scarred.

Holding a folder.

The detective reached for his weapon.

The man raised his hands.

“I’m not here to hurt anyone.””

My mother stopped breathing.

Because she knew that face.

May you like

She whispered his name.

“Ethan.””
