Chapter 13: The Truth My Mother Buried

The words stayed in the air.

He was hiding from me.

I looked at my mother.

The woman I had spent four years mourning.

The woman I had defended.

The woman I had believed was the victim in every version of this nightmare.

And now she was telling me she had secrets too.

My voice barely came out.

“Why?””

My mother wiped her tears.

“Because I found something.””

Ethan looked devastated.

“Claire, you don’t understand.””

“No,” she said quietly.

“I understand exactly.””

She turned toward me.

“The night before the crash, I discovered Ethan had been investigating Marcus.””

I looked at Ethan.

“And?””

“And I thought Ethan was working with him.””

The room went silent.

Ethan looked hurt.

“You believed I betrayed you?””

“I was wrong.””

Her voice cracked.

“But I was scared.””

She sat down.

“I had just found out Marcus had been moving money from your grandfather’s accounts. I found documents. I found messages. Then Ethan came home acting like he knew more than he was telling me.””

Ethan lowered his head.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

My mother laughed sadly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Nobody spoke.

“I confronted Ethan,” she continued.

“We argued.””

She looked at me.

“That night, I took the car and left.””

My stomach tightened.

“The night of the crash?””

She nodded.

“I thought I was running away from both of them.””

“But someone cut the brakes.””

“Yes.””

She looked at Ethan.

“And Ethan found me.””

I stared.

“He found you?””

My mother nodded.

“He pulled me from the car before it went over the cliff.””

Ethan looked down.

“But then Marcus found us.””

A chill moved through me.

“What happened?””

Ethan’s face hardened.

“He wasn’t alone.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“There were three people.””

Detective Harris leaned forward.

“Who?””

My mother looked at my grandmother.

Patricia started crying.

“No.””

My mother continued.

“Marcus. Vanessa. And my mother.””

The room exploded.

My grandmother shook her head.

“I didn’t want it to happen.””

My mother stared at her.

“But you watched.””

My grandmother covered her face.

“I thought Marcus would scare you into silence.””

“And when he didn’t?””

“I tried to stop him.””

Nobody believed her.

Not anymore.

My mother looked at me.

“I escaped because Ethan distracted them.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Then why didn’t you come back?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because Marcus made me believe you were dead.””

My mother froze.

“What?””

“He showed me pictures. He told me he found your body.””

A horrible silence followed.

“I spent years thinking I lost you.””

My mother looked broken.

“We both lost each other.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Detective Harris’s phone rang.

He answered.

“Detective Harris.””

His face changed.

“What?””

Everyone watched him.

He stood slowly.

“When?””

A pause.

Then:

“Understood.””

He ended the call.

“What happened?”” Ethan asked.

The detective looked at us.

“Marcus and Vanessa escaped during transport.””

My mother immediately stood.

“What?””

“They had help.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

Detective Harris looked toward the evidence room.

“The person who arranged their escape left one message.””

He opened his phone.

A picture appeared.

A handwritten note.

Only five words.

*The real plan begins now.*

At the bottom was a signature.

Not Marcus.

Not Vanessa.

Not my grandmother.

A name none of us expected.

Ethan stared at it.

“No.””

My mother looked at him.

“Who is it?””

May you like

Ethan whispered:

“My brother.””
