Chapter 2: The Secret Behind The Smile

The auditorium became a battlefield of whispers.

Phones were raised everywhere.

Parents who had arrived to celebrate their children were now staring at my family like they were watching a crime scene.

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“No, that’s not what it sounds like.””

My mother laughed softly, but there was no happiness in it.

“That’s exactly what it sounds like.””

I stared at Vanessa.

The woman who had braided my hair before school dances.

The woman who made me hot chocolate when I was sick.

The woman who told me she loved me after my father remarried her.

My entire memory of the last four years felt like a painting someone had poured water over.

“What is happening?”” I asked.

My voice sounded small.

Vanessa looked at me.

“Lena, please. You have to listen to me.””

My father stepped between us.

“Vanessa has been through enough.””

I almost laughed.

“Enough?””

I pointed at my mother.

“She disappeared for four years.””

My father’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand.””

“No,” I said.

“I understand that you told me my mother was dead.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

My father looked away.

That hurt more than anger would have.

Because somewhere deep inside, I was still waiting for him to explain everything.

To tell me this was a misunderstanding.

To tell me my childhood hadn’t been built on a lie.

My mother walked closer.

“Lena, I wanted to come sooner.””

I looked at her.

“Then why didn’t you?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because every time I got close, something happened.””

She reached into her coat and pulled out a small notebook.

“The first year after the crash, I was trapped in an abandoned cabin. Someone had taken my phone. My wallet. Everything.””

My breathing slowed.

“I escaped,” she continued.

“But I was injured. I had no money. No identification. I was terrified.””

“Why didn’t you go to the police?”” I asked.

She looked at Marcus.

“Because the person who did this knew everything about me.””

The room became silent again.

My father’s face hardened.

“This is ridiculous.””

A police officer entered through the side doors with another officer behind him.

Apparently someone had called.

My mother handed them the evidence bag.

“Officer, I kept everything.””

The officer looked at Marcus.

“Sir, we need you to stay where you are.””

My father raised his hands.

“You’re making a mistake.””

The officer didn’t answer.

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Marcus, tell her.””

Everyone looked at her.

My father’s expression changed.

“Tell her what?””

Vanessa swallowed.

The confidence she always carried was gone.

“Tell her what happened the night her mother disappeared.””

My father stared at her.

A terrible silence passed between them.

Then I noticed something.

They weren’t looking at each other like husband and wife.

They were looking at each other like enemies.

“You said you destroyed it,” Vanessa whispered.

My father’s face turned pale.

“Be quiet.””

My heart started racing.

“What did you destroy?””

Nobody answered.

The officer stepped closer.

“Mr. Hale, I’m going to ask you again. Do you know anything about this recording?””

My father looked at me.

Not the officer.

Not my mother.

Me.

For one second, I saw something in his eyes.

Regret.

Then it disappeared.

“I don’t know what she’s talking about.””

My mother reached into her bag.

“This is why I came here today.””

She pulled out a small envelope.

My name was written across the front.

LENA.

“I found this hidden in the place where they kept me.””

My fingers trembled as she handed it to me.

“What is it?””

My mother looked at my father.

“It’s a letter your father wrote four years ago.””

My father suddenly moved.

Fast.

The officer grabbed his arm.

“Don’t.””

My father struggled.

“Lena, don’t open that.””

Everyone heard him.

The fear in his voice.

I looked down at the envelope.

The paper inside was old and folded.

I slowly opened it.

The first line made my blood turn cold.

May you like

Because it began with:

“Vanessa, if Lena ever finds out what we did, we’re both finished.””
