Chapter 12: The Truth Hidden Before I Was Born

The room felt smaller.

Like the walls were closing in.

My entire life had been a mystery I didn’t know existed.

Now I was standing in the center of it.

Detective Harris closed the file.

“We need to understand what this means before we make assumptions.””

But everyone already knew.

The people who had controlled my life weren’t just chasing money.

They were chasing something connected to me.

Something I carried.

“What genetic evidence?”” I asked.

Nobody answered immediately.

Finally, Ethan spoke.

“Your grandfather was investigating a company involved in illegal medical experiments.””

I stared at him.

“That sounds impossible.””

“I wish it was.””

He looked at the report.

“He discovered they were hiding information about patients and altering records.””

My mother frowned.

“And Lena?””

Ethan looked at her.

“Your pregnancy was part of his investigation.””

The words made me step back.

“What?””

My mother looked horrified.

“Are you saying I was part of some experiment?””

“No.””

Ethan shook his head quickly.

“You weren’t the experiment.””

He looked at me.

“You were the proof.””

I didn’t understand.

“What proof?””

Ethan walked to the table.

“Your grandfather discovered that someone had been changing medical records for decades.””

Detective Harris nodded.

“The files suggest a major cover-up.””

My grandmother suddenly spoke.

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at her.

She was crying.

“Please.””

My mother stared at her.

“You know.””

My grandmother looked down.

“I know enough.””

“Tell us.””

Her hands shook.

“I was told Lena’s birth records had to be changed.””

My mother’s face went pale.

“By who?””

My grandmother didn’t answer.

My mother stepped closer.

“By who?””

Finally, she whispered:

“Marcus.””

The room went silent.

“He wanted Lena’s records because he knew the truth would destroy him.””

I looked at her.

“What truth?””

My grandmother looked at me.

“The man you thought was your father…”

She swallowed.

“He wasn’t just hiding your inheritance.””

A terrible feeling formed in my stomach.

“What else?””

“He was hiding that you were never supposed to belong to him.””

My mother grabbed my hand.

“Lena.””

I pulled away.

“No.””

I looked at everyone.

“I need someone to say something that actually makes sense.””

Nobody did.

Then Ethan picked up the DNA report.

“There’s one more thing.””

Detective Harris looked at him.

“What?””

Ethan pointed to the date.

“This test wasn’t ordered by Marcus.””

“Then who ordered it?””

Ethan looked at my grandmother.

She became completely still.

“Patricia.””

My grandmother closed her eyes.

“I was trying to find out the truth.””

My mother laughed painfully.

“You keep saying that.””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

My grandmother looked at me.

“Of finding out who you really were.””

The words hurt.

Because they sounded like fear.

Not love.

My phone suddenly buzzed.

Everyone turned.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

A photo appeared.

My blood froze.

It was a picture of my mother.

Taken years ago.

Inside the cabin where she had been held.

But she wasn’t alone.

Standing beside her was another person.

A person I knew.

A person who had been missing from the story until now.

Under the photo was a message.

*Your mother told you she was the victim. Ask her what happened the night Ethan disappeared.*

My mother saw the picture.

The color drained from her face.

“Lena…”

I looked at her.

“Is there something you haven’t told me?””

She started crying.

And for the first time since she returned…

She didn’t say no.

She whispered:

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

My mother looked at Ethan.

Then at me.

“I wasn’t kidnapped the night I disappeared.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

She closed her eyes.

“I ran.””

Nobody moved.

“Why?””

Her voice broke.

“Because I found out what Ethan was really involved in.””

Ethan looked shocked.

“Claire…”

She looked at him.

“You never told her.””

The silence was unbearable.

Then my mother whispered:

“Your father wasn’t hiding from Marcus.””

May you like

She looked at me.

“He was hiding from me.””
